Why Patti Smith Mattered In 1974 Patti Smith was the first to be signed from the initial wave of bands that played CBGBs . For that alone she has earned the title "Godmother of punk" ( Kozak 38 ). However Smith's influence on the punk scene is not confined to her CBGBs association. Smith was one of the genre's most prolific artists regardless of medium. Her accomplishments, both independent and in terms of the punk movement, are significant. Smith became a rock star on her own terms. Starting as rock's biggest fan, she published her poetry and rock criticism. She also tried play writing with Sam Shepard on "Cowboy Mouth" before becoming a rock musician herself. Smith was also one of the few (if not first) women to succeed in rock music without becoming a sex symbol. She showed off her rock'n'roll hero worship and created powerful rock pieces out of her collection of rock influences. As in her play writing, she created narrative and texture with her songs. Smith released her first single independently in 1974. One-time roommate and friend, Robert Mapplethorpe,

I get hooked on one thing. I was listening to Marian Anderson quite a bit while I was working on lyrics for this record. I also started listening to her after my mom died. I heard this little song, and it made me think of my mom, in a really positive way. It just became my private theme song. Then I got it in my mind to cover it for the record, because it just has piano, and my daughter Jesse plays piano. I asked her if she wanted to do it with me, and she worked really hard on it. " Patti Smith interviewed on Scotland On Sunday: "I’ve always found interviews embarrassing," she explains. "People say, ‘How does it feel to be a rock icon?’ I’ve probably just walked to the interview after doing the laundry. The cat has thrown up on the carpet and I’ve had to clear that up. Then I get the rock icon question. It seems so conceited

In 1971, Patti's voice appeared in a short film called Robert Having his Nipple Pierced . The "Robert" in question is her friend and co-conspirator Robert Mapplethorpe, renowned photographer. A production still emerged from it featuring a bare-breasted woman, who looks very much like Patti Smith, who has Robert's arm draped over her shoulder. Warning : Both Robert and his woman friend are shirtless. Just don't go there if this shocks you.
An early supporter of Patti's, Lisa Robinson wrote a quick blurb about Patti's one-time transformation into an Alphabet City Edith Piaf in a 1974 edition of Eleganza , her column in Creem magazine. (Picture included)
A personal favorite of my shopping finds from recent years is a copy of this Sire Records sampler , a 1978 promo LP issued in the UK which features Patti's version of Hey Joe from the A-side of her first single, originally released in 1974 independently by her friend Robert Mapplethorpe. Sire reissued the single in Europe in 1977, after Patti gained some international notoriety, but in later years, on CD compilations such as Sire's

30. Antonin Artaud (important To Patti Smith)
An article by Mary Lynch and Fiona Webster.
http://www.oceanstar.com/patti/bio/artaud.htm
antonin artaud
[contributed by Mary Lynch, w/ additions by Fiona Webster] [Patti Smith's] aesthetic program is one that owes an incalculable debt to Antonin Artaud, who, in the words of Roger Shattuck, "concocted a magic amalgam of theatrical style, occult and esoteric knowledge . . . antiliterary pronouncements, drug cultism and revolutionary rhetoric without politics." New York Times
Antonin Artaud: 1896-1948.
Actor, director, writer, artist, founder of the "theatre of cruelty". A visionary and a mystic. He saw the theatre as a ritual able to give rise to a numinous experience within the spectator. He believed that new myths must be found for modern audiences, as we no longer participate in the same mysteries as in the past. In his article "Metaphysics and the mise en scene," Artaud discusses the decline in the meaningfulness of certain myths to painting. Artaud called his theatre the Theatre of Cruelty. He wrote two manifestos entitled "The Theatre of Cruelty" and "The Theatre and Cruelty". Through it, he meant to enable the viewer to project his or her feelings and sensations beyond the usual limits imposed by time and space. The audience would be capable of having a powerful metaphysical experience whle watching the stage. Afterwards, the audience would feel purified. A sample quotation: I employ the word cruelty in the sense of an appetite for life, a cosmic rigor,an implacable necessity,in the gnostic sense of a living whirlwind that devours darkness, in the sense that pain apart from whose ineluctable necessity life could not continue; good is desired, it is the consequence of an act; evil is permanent.

Carly Simon "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" Carly Simon first recorded in 1964 as the Simon Sisters, with older sister Lucy. With her debut album, Carly Simon had the hit "That's the Way I've Always Heard it Should Be" (written with Jacob Brackman). It was 1971, the year I turned ten. I'd flip through the stations on my transistor radio, searching for "That's the Way..." or the Rolling Stones " Satisfaction ." I was easily satisfied. Simon's first hit (of many) was an anthem of sorts to the tenuous alliances adults were beginning to forge in those days. Interestingly, the song became popular at wedding receptions, no doubt due to our inability then to decipher rock 'n' roll lyrics (these were the days when parents were flipping out because they thought Jimi Hendrix was saying, "Excuse me, while I kiss this guy 1n 1974, I bought my first LP Carly Simon's HOTCAKES. On the cover was a pregnant and glowing Simon at the home she and James Taylor were building on Martha's Vineyard (she and Taylor divorced in '83). It was an album about domestic bliss and the shadows cast by the Outside World. I loved the album (especially "Grownup" and "Older Sister") although I wasn't really aware of the shadows. Then again, maybe I was my parents divorced soon after. CAVALE: a chick who looks like a crow, dressed in raggedy black.

PATTI SMITH - Biography "Three chord rock merged with the power of the word." So Patti Smith described her music on the 1975 release of Horses, her celebrated debut album; and so she has continued to blend the spoken and sung arts in incantatory fashion with her latest work, Gone Again. Impossible to categorize, moving easily between the literary and musical worlds, always unpredictable and impassioned, she is an idiosyncratically unique performer who has always remained true to her artistic vision. Born in Chicago and raised in Woodbury, New Jersey, just across the state line from Philadelphia, Patti's mother, Beverly, was a jazz singer cum waitress. Her father, Grant, worked at the Honeywell plant; she was the oldest of four siblings: her sisters Linda and Kimberly (the latter plays mandolin on Gone Again's "Ravens,"), and brother Todd. Unable to find her place in high school society, she took refuge in the images of Rimbaud, Bob Dylan, James Brown, and the Rolling Stones. Dropping out of Glassboro State Teacher's College, she headed for the bright lights - big city of New York. When she arrived in town, she met an art student named Robert Mapplethorpe and they moved in together. Patti found a job as a bookstore clerk at the Strand and Scribner's. In 1969, she traveled to Paris with her sister Linda, working on the street as a performance artist, and making her first forays into the visual arts. Returning to New York as the seventies got underway, she rebounded between the back room at Max's Kansas City and the Hotel Chelsea. Encouraged by such as Dylan cohort Bobby Neuwirth and blues virtuoso Johnny Winter, Patti made a name for herself in underground theatre (starring in such plays as Jackie Curtis' Vain Victory at the Cafe La Mama), and collaborating with the playwright Sam Shepherd, with whom she co-authored Cowboy Mouth. She was also writing poetry.

40. UNo MAS: Patti Smith, Back From Nowhere
A Uno Mas interview with patti smith and Lenny Kaye on her return to performing.

Feature
Patti Smith, Back From Nowhere
By Kirk Gee "Most of the songs on the record I wrote for Fred...about about how I feel with him gone." JAPAN: When did you start recording again? PATTI SMITH: We recorded a lot of the summer, but we didn't finish because I felt I needed a break, so we'll finish it in the next week or two and it'll probably be out in June. We do have a title for it, but you mustn't tell anyone in America; it was Fred's title and he told me to keep it a secret until the album came out because he liked secrets. It's called Gone Again and the title song is the last song Fred wrote and it has a sort of American Indian feel. Fred was part Indian and was proud of his heritage and it sort of has that feel in the song, so that's the title song. Most of the songs on the record I wrote for Fred; they're about Fred, about transition and his continuing voyage, about how I feel with him gone. SWEDEN: Was the album part of dealing with his loss, a way to handle the grief through working on a new project? PS: Well yes, but all work is important in life. I think it's important for human beings to have a work ethic be it a 9-5 ethic or a personal work ethic or whatever one's tastes are. Work is definitely a healthy part of one's life no matter what's going on.
