Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (MA)
Directed by Kevin Smith
'There's a script for this?' Holden (Ben Affleck) introduces Jay and Silent Bob to a little thing called the Internet, which has allowed everyone in America to bitch about movies. With this film writer/director/ actor Kevin Smith brings to a close the movie voyages of Jay Phat Buds (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith), who have been recurring comic relief characters throughout his earlier 'New Jersey Chronicles' including Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Dogma. Apparently these two characters have spawned a cult following in the US, although heaven knows why. The duo parallel Beavis and Butthead in their puerile stupidity, and Jay's obsession with the use of profanity often makes you wince. While revelling in lowbrow antics that are beneath the newfound feeling he showed in Chasing Amy, Smith's argument for such jokes is that he wants to 'preach tolerance by hiding it in humour.' The joke seems to be that there is no joke other than Smith's tiresome obsession with oral sex. Smith's on screen role as faithful sidekick Silent Bob unfortunately takes the backseat to the larrikin with the puerile mind. Bob is a far more interesting character who for the most part gets to communicate only with facial expressions and gestures, save for two rather eloquent discourses which make you wonder why the guy stays so damn silent, and wishing that Jay would sometimes take a page from his book and keep his motor mouth shut.

Slacker superheroes Jay and Silent Bob make their farewell appearance in the writer/director's latest, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Scruffy and disheveled, ever anti-establishment, indie filmmaker Kevin Smith enters the W Hotel room humming the "Imperial March" from The Empire Strikes Back to greet a pack of gushing, eager journalists. That the reporters are acting more like fans doesn't matter a bit to the affable director, who takes a seat, lights up the first of many cigarettes and starts chatting like he was everyone's old friend. He's as happy regaling the rapt audience with stories about working as a Jersey quickie mart clerk as he is talking about Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back , his latest movie to feature the characters inspired by that long-ago job.

Having fun with ketchup. In a series of lingering, intimate close-ups, the camera studies the ketchup bottle. Nothing else is in the shot - not even a hamburger or French fry. The ketchup bottle itself is nearly empty. The camera admires the bottle's contour as if it were the Venus de Milo, while the voiceover calls attention to the traces of ketchup that remain in the bottle and will never come out, no matter how many times the bottle is shaken or slapped. "This part of the ketchup will never be completely understood. This is the part that has issues. Heinz ketchup: Some of it has issues." "Issues" is one of over a dozen spots that Kevin Smith, of Backyard Productions, Chicago and Venice, Calif., has directed for Heinz via Leo Burnett Co., Chicago. Other ads in the campaign include "Ready," which questions why it takes so long for the Heinz ketchup to come out of the bottle.

kevin smith Clerks was born out of working for three years in that fucking store(not to mention all v You began your career as an independent film director.
http://verbosity.wiw.org/issue3/ksmith.html
Kevin Smith, head of View Askew Productions , recently took the time to speak with us here at verbosity . Kevin is best known for his writing and directing on both Clerks and Mallrats , as well as appearing in these features as Silent Boba character quickly becoming an underground culture icon. Kevin is currently at work not only on the follow up to Clerks and 'Rats Chasing Amy , but is also the screenwriter for the upcoming Superman feature from Warner Brothers. verbosity: Clerks has a certain quality about it that truly captures the essence of working in a retail situation. Did you have experience with this sort of work and did you incoporate any personal experiences into the story?
Kevin Smith: Clerks was born out of working for three years in that fucking store (not to mention all the years prior to that doing time in sundry other convenience stores). Things like the Milk-Maid and the Egg-man come directly from register-jockeying experience, as does the spirit of most of the discussions Dante and Randal share. When you're that bored, and in the same location day-in and day-out, you begin talking about some inane and merrit-less shit, just to get you through the day. v: It's been said that many of the characters in your movies are based on actual people. Are Jay and Silent Bob at all based in reality or are they just out there?

The Movie:
A director whose films have struck a chord with the 18-32 audience, Kevin Smith has also managed to bring his fans closer with his viewaskew.com website, where the director communicates with his fans. Speaking engagements at colleges began to become more and more popular and, for the past few years, Smith has spoke to increasingly larger audiences (there's about 3,200 people at one of the shows in the program) at schools across the country.
Produced and directed by famed DVD documentary producer J.M. Kenny, the film is a very professional looking piece, with nice camera work and only a few little odds and ends that don't seem too necessary (some of the interviews with the college kids before the shows that is inserted early on gets kinda repetitive and doesn't offer that much). The kids in the various audiences respond to just about anything, even laughing when Smith goofs on their silliness (most amusingly when Smith goes into a whole bit after refusing to dance on-stage when a student requests he do it, quickly followed by students banging on the outside window trying to get in - they get in, only to have to dance for the audience).
As with the commentaries for his own films, Smith is outspoken and clearly unafraid to joke about and go after friends and other industry folks - a particularly funny target remains Smith's "Chasing Amy" star Ben Affleck, who Smith talks about tricking into doing his "Jersey Girl" before Affleck's "Daredevil". Jason Mewes also sits on stage during one of the shows, although pretty much to be the target of Smith's jokes. There's also some discussion of working with the studio system and a particularly hilarious discussion of trying to explain to the studio that their "Superman Lives" script "sucked", along with how Smith's version of the script ran into trouble with Tim Burton and the resulting press battle between the two.
