  • Red Skelton King of Laughter
Red Skelton, King of Laughter, is a compilation of episodes of Red Skelton's long-running TV series, as well as bits and pieces from other sources. For example, it includes a clip of Red's vaudeville routine, Guzzler's Gin, as well as a trailer for his movie Public Pigeon Number 1. It also includes various bloopers, and a rehearsal with Martha Raye that includes some things that never made it on the air. Character sketches include Clem Kadiddlehopper teaching the finer points of playing Pedestrian Polo (which reduced my 18 year old daughter to hysterical laughter), Willie Lump Lump (in the army, making a salad), Lord Beaverhead broadcasting for the BBC (with a short display of the Mead Widdle Kid at the end of the sketch), as well as Cauliflower McPugg and Sheriff Deadeye. I rate it 4 clowns on a 5-clown scale. Support

The Pledge of Allegiance - A Commentary by Red Skelton
Pledge of Allegiance, performed by Red Skelton
As a schoolboy, one of Red Skelton's teachers explained the words and meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance to his class. Skelton later wrote down, and eventually recorded, his recollection of this lecture. It is followed by an observation of his own.
From THE RED SKELTON HOUR, CBS TV, January 14, 1969
On January 14, 1969, Red Skelton touched the hearts of millions of Americans with his "Pledge Of Allegiance", in which he explained the meaning of each and every word. Red Skelton's "Pledge" was twice read into the Congressional Record of the United States and received numerous awards. RED SKELTON: "I remember this one teacher. To me, he was the greatest teacher, a real sage of my time. He had such wisdom. We were all reciting the Pledge Of Allegiance and he walked over. Mr. Lasswell was his name... He said": "I've been listening to you boys and girls recite the Pledge Of Allegiance all semester and it seems as though it is becoming monotonous to you. If I may, may I recite it and try to explain to you the meaning of each word:

Commentary on the Pledge of Allegiance
by Red Skelton
As a schoolboy, one of Red Skelton's teachers explained the words and meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance to his class. Skelton later wrote down, and eventually recorded, his recollection of this lecture. It is followed by an observation of his own. I - - Me; an individual; a committee of one. Pledge - - Dedicate all of my worldly goods to give without self-pity. Allegiance - - My love and my devotion. To the Flag - - Our standard; Old Glory ; a symbol of Freedom; wherever she waves there is respect, because your loyalty has given her a dignity that shouts, Freedom is everybody's job. United - - That means that we have all come together. States - - Individual communities that have united into forty-eight great states. Forty-eight individual communities with pride and dignity and purpose. All divided with imaginary boundaries, yet united to a common purpose, and that is love for country. And to the Republic - - Republica state in which sovereign power is invested in representatives chosen by the people to govern. And government is the people; and it's from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people. For which it stands One Nation - - One Nationmeaning, so blessed by God.

Red Skelton passed away on September 17, 1997 at the age of 84 Red Skelton ,was born on July 18, 1913 and died Wednesday September 17, 1997 at a hospital in Rancho Mirage, California, after a lingering illness. He was 84. He was a man of many talents. Along with the writing of children's books, needlepoint clowns, composing music, designing china plates, actor and clown, he is now being acclaimed as an important painter. Although his artistry runs the gamut of still lifes, landscapes, etc., clowns seem to be his forte. Red Skelton originals sell from $50,000 up.
His works are a sound investment in art, as well as a recognized collector's delight , revealing the man who painted them. His art work has proven its value with other contemporary artists and their worth has no limit. They are intensely moving, winning him the Footprints in the Sands of Time award... one of the highest honors an artist can receive. Critics acclaim them as a whimsical feeling that brightens and cheers every room.

Seeing Red : The Skelton in Hollywood's Closet by Wes D. Gehring, Steve Bell - Book 1950s TV's Greatest Shows - 12 Shows - 3 DVDs Includes Red Skelton Red Skelton Show Tidbits The Red Skelton Show began on radio in 1941 and was a success but television was the medium which best showcased the huge talents of Red Skelton. Radio didn't allow for Skelton to demonstrate his gift for pantomine and sight gags. The show always featured a guest star and some skits. Musical guests performed and one of the first TV appearances of the Rolling Stones was on Red Skelton. But it was for the wonderful characters Skelton created that people tuned in. Among those characters: Clem Kadiddlehopper Freddy Freeloader The Mean Widdle Kid Sheriff Deadeye Willy Lump Lump Cauliflower McPugg Bolivar Shagnasty San Fernando Red Skelton always closed his show with "God Bless."

Comedian Red Skelton, son of a circus clown, was one of the brightest young stars in radio during the 1940s. While many of radio's big names never fully made the transition to television, Red did. He had been essentially a visual comedian all along. In September 1951, almost ten years to the day after he first appeared with his own show on network radio, he arrived on TV, and remained a TV superstar for the next 20 years. Most of Red's repertoire of regular characters had been developed on radio, before a live audience

http://povonline.com/cols/COL157.htm
ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED 10/24/97 When I went to U.C.L.A., I had a dreadful schedule. My major required me to take a certain English class but the only one open was at the ungodly hour of 8 AM, when no human in his right mind is willingly awake. That was bad enough. But I also had to take a certain History class that was only available at 3 PM, Tuesdays and Thursdays. I filled in my other classes at convenient hours but, twice a week, I had to kill five hours between lectures. I'd usually walk down to Westwood Village, right near campus, and have lunch at Woody's Smorgasburger. Then I'd wander by Bel Air Camera and see if Red was there. That's "Red" as in "Red Skelton." The famous comedian. The one who passed away recently. Bel Air Camera was and still is, I think an upscale store catering to the wealthier photography buff. The prices were steep but the salesfolks knew their craft, so that was one fine reason to shop there. Another was that, at least in 1970, there was at least a 10% chance that you'd run into Red Skelton, and he'd do an entire monologue, just for you. One time when I was there and Red wasn't, a salesguy explained to me that Mr. Skelton came in two or three times a week. He'd either buy some piece of photographic equipment or bring in whatever he'd bought the day before and ask why he couldn't get it to work. If he found any sort of audience, he would launch into his one-man show.
