PATIALA BRIEF HISTORY The family claims descent from the Bhatti founder of Jaisalmer, Jaisal. His third son Rai Hem, left the family domains after the usual quarrel and carved out a small principality for himself around Bhatinda and Bhatner. His successor in the fourth degree, Khiwa, fell on hard times ad was forced to move to Kot Ladwa, where he married a girl from the Jat Basehra caste, against the clan traditions of the Rajputs. Thereafter many quarrels ensued between his descendants at the Bhattis. The Mughals appointed his descendant Mehraj in 1526. This office became hereditary amongst his descendants until Phul, the Sikh ancestor of the dynasty, which came to rule over Patiala, Jind and Nabha.

Title : Maharajah Race : Sidhu Jat Religion : Sikh Size : 5,932 square miles Gun Salute : 17 Under British rule this was the most important Sikh state. The ruling families of Patiala, Nabha, Jind, Faridkot, Kaithal and Malaud all claim to be descended from the Raja of Jaisalamer. Phool the founder of this family along with his brother Sandaali became an orphans in 1618, and both were taken under the wing of their uncle. They both visited Guru Har Rai as youngsters along with their uncle, it is said that their uncle told them to rap their bellies to indiacte to the Guru the povety and hunger they were enduring. The Guru blessed Phool and is said to have told him that he would make a king. Phool set up his own village and was often in conflict with local chiefs. This enraged the Governor of Sirhind who summoned him and put him behind bars. Phool died in 1652. He had 6 sons, of whom Rama emerged from this group as the most emininent. The Governor of Sirhind appointed Rama to the post of Chaudari. Rama was killed at Maler-Kotla in 1714. He was suceeded by his son, Ala Singh. Amar Singh continued to use other Sikh leaders to further his aims. He continued to extend his territory. In 1767 during Abdalis 9th invasion of India, Amar Singh paid a sum of 2 lakh rupees to set thirty thousand Indians captured by Abdali as slaves free. For this benevolent act he was given the name of Bhandi Chhor (Liberator of the slaves)

AFI selects 23 athletes for Ukraine NEW DELHI, APRIL 29. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has selected a 23-member squad for a trip to Kiev, Ukraine, for a training-cum-competition programme in the run-up to the Athens Olympics. The squad will leave here on May 1 for a 47-day visit during which period the athletes will compete in meets in Kiev and Moscow. Originally, a bigger squad was planned for Ukraine but the inability of the men's 4x100m team to come close to expectations, apart from certain constraints at Kiev, forced a reduction in numbers. On Thursday evening, at least one member of the squad, Navpreet Singh, was weighing his options of staying back at home because of his family pre-occupation.

Photography was invented at about the time that Duleep Singh was born in 1838 and this collection begins with one of the first photographs taken outside of Europe of the ten year old Maharajah taken by the East India Company in 1848. Through this collection of photographs on newspaper clippings Peter (Bhupinder Singh) Bance has pieced together the story of the first Sikh residents of Britain and has continued the story of the Maharajah’s family from where the earlier book by Christy Campbell, the Maharajah’s Box, left off. Beginning with a straight forward summary of the early history of Duleep Singh and his Kingdom in Punjab, the story is brought right up to date with photos of places associated with the family such as the house in Holland Park, London which stands just a stones throw away from the present day Central Gurdwara. The second half of the book tells the story, though photographs, of the Maharajah’s children, Queen Victoria’s God-children who were baptised as Christians, but retained the proud name of Duleep Singh. The young Princes supported their uncut hair until at least the age of 12. Prince Victor joined the Royal Military Academy, but resigned from the Army soon after becoming lieutenant in the 1
