Cricketing thoughts
RAMACHANDRA Guha's book A Corner of a Foreign Field (Picador India, Rs.495) is an unusual book on cricket. It is not wholly about runs, run-outs, batting and bowling. It is a socio-political history of the game as it has developed in India over the past 200 years. Guha writes, "For the social historian, mass sport is a sphere of activity that expresses, in concentrated form, the values, prejudices, divisions and unifying symbols of a society" and he goes on to say, "... the cricket field was both a theatre of imperial power and of Indian resistance. The career of Palwankar Baloo illuminates the operations of that unique (and uniquely dreadful) human institution, caste". Cricket mania is a wholly unexpected legacy of imperialism. The hold it has got on the imagination of the people of India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka is something quite extraordinary. I have digressed enough. What I intended to write was the appalling commercialisation of a great game. Young men in their early twenties have become the darlings and victims of the sponsors, who are not always motivated by the love or lure of cricket but the lucre it gets them. Then there is the all pervasive

    74. Gateway To Sikhism: Famous Sikhs:Maharaja Yadavinder Singh
Son of Maharaja bhupinder singh, one of the most prominent of India s 600odd reigningprinces, Yadavinder singh was brought up in a luxurious atmosphere.
    http://allaboutsikhs.com/person/yadavindrasingh.htm
Home Maharaja Yadavinder Singh LIEUTENANT GENERAL MAHARAJA YADAVINDER SINGH (Sidhu)(1913-1974) was a Grand Commander of the Indian Empire (as picked by all the princes of India), Companion of the British Empire, Doctor of Laws from Banaras and Panjab Universities, was the last hereditary ruler of the erstwhile Indian princely state of Patiala. Born on 7 January 1913 during the high noon of the British rag he lived to see India become an independent democratic republic. He was the premier ruling prince in the Punjab. Prominent in sports, courageous in war, persuasive in diplomacy, knowledgeable in botany and agriculture, he was perhaps modern India's nearest equivalent to the ideal renaissance man. 1938 was indeed a momentous year for the young prince. It was clouded, of course, by his father's death; but on the brighter side it saw his election to the presidency of the Olympic Association. He became the ruler of a kingdom of 5,932 square miles having a population of nearly two million. In the year of his accession was also solemnized his marriage to Mohinder Kaur, daughter of a Patiala nobleman, Harchand Singh Jeji. On the outbreak of the World War in 1939, Maharaja Yadavinder Singh founded the Khalsa Defence of India League. Sikh enlistment to the army was accelerated by the efforts of the Maharaja who himself went to the Italian theatre of war and to the Middle East and Malaya. His support of the War effort was rewarded in 1944 by an honorary appointment as Lieutenant-Colonel in the Indian army.

    ATHLETICS/FEDERATION CUP
    A satisfying meet
    S.THYAGARAJAN VINO JOHN
    P. Ramachandran is jubilant after winning the 400m. He set a meet mark. IDENTIFIED as the final selection trials for the Commonwealth Games at Manchester and the ATF meet at Colombo, besides being a test of skills for the Asian Games at Busan, the eighth Federation Cup athletics meet in Chennai carried more than the usual significance. Fourteen new marks, seven each in the men's and women's sections, were created in the four-day competition. This underscored the efficacy of the training programmes charted out by the Amateur Athletics Federation of India and the form achieved in the previous events, the domestic circuit and the Inter-State championships. It is not easy to focus on a particular individual in an athletic competition for excellence; each event has a glamour of its own, and even the 3000 steeplechase, an event often ignored by all sections, attracted attention in Chennai. A new time was recorded as well. But two competitors on the distaff side deserve special mention for the progress they have made and for coming in line with a medal prospect at the Asian Games in Busan. VINO JOHN
Sunita Rani proved quite formidable in the 1500m. Her effort at the Chennai Federation Cup was the best in Asia this year.
