Shepard, Sam
Playwright commissioned by Dylan to write a screenplay for a film to be shot on the 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue. Though the script idea was later dropped, Shepard contributed his ideas and acting to the film Renaldo and Clara and documented the tour in his Rolling Thunder Logbook. He subsequently collaborated with Dylan on the 1984 song 'New Danville Girl' and on a June 1987 feature for Esquire magazine. Clinton Heylin:"Bob Dylan: Behind The Shades, a Biography" Date: Sun, 27 Aug 95 18:27:32 0400 From: Daniel Olson (olson@yorku.ca) To: Karl.Erik.Andersen@nbr.no Subject: Who's Who - Letter S Hi Karl, Me again. A few comments around the letter S: Sam Shepard:
  • played drums with the Holy Modal Rounders (see Pete Stampfel entry) for a few years in the late '60s;
  • lived with Patti (not Pattie) Smith for a while, they co-wrote a play called "Cowboy Mouth" (in which there is a discussion of what it takes to make the perfect rock star "You need and angel with a cowboy mouth" "Dylan had it. Mick Jagger had it" quotes are from dim memory of reading the play - you can check it out);
  • co-wrote a song with Dylan "Brownsville Girl" on Knocked Out Loaded (which oddly enough I have never heard);

TFAW.com Warner Bros. New Line ... HollywoodStore SAM SHEPARD November 5, 1943 Fort Sheridan, Illinois Playwright and actor, leader of the avant-garde in contemporary American theatre since his earliest work. Sam Shepard's plays are not easy to catezorize, but in general they blend images of the Old West, fascination with pop culture and science fiction. Before he was thirty Shepard had over thirty plays produced in New York. In his works Shepard has repeatedly examined the moral anomie and spiritual starvation that characterize the world of his drama. Sam Shepard was the son of an Air Force man, who retired to be a farmer. He was raised on a California farm in Duarte and studied agriculture at San Antonio Junior College. After a year he joined a touring company of actors. Later he was appointed playwright-in-residence at the Magic Theatre in San Francisco. In 1963 he moved to New York, supported himself by serving tables at the Village Gate, and pursued his theatrical interests. Shepard's one act-plays were produced in off-off Broadway theatre next year. He worked at experimental spots like La Mama, Cafe Cino, the Open Theatre, and the American Place Theatre. In the 1965-66 season, Shepard won Village Voice newspaper's Obie awards for his plays CHIGACO, ICARUS'S MOTHER, and RED CROSS. His bizarre comedy, LA TURISTA, was produced in 1967 in New York and two years later in London. Despite the critical acclaim of MAD DOG BLUES (1971) Shepard moved to England, where he lived until 1974. During this time he wrote several plays, that were success on both sides of the Atlantic, among others THE TOOTH OF CRIME (1972) and GEOGRAPHY OF A HORSE DREAMER (1974). In the late 1970s Shepard wrote CURSE OF THE STARVING CLASS (1976), the Pulizer Prize-winning BURIED CHILD (1979) and TRUE WEST (1981). - A LIE OF THE MIND (1986), poetic look at the American West won New York Drama Critics Circle Award.

The Right Stuff didn't do all that well at the box office and there are many theories about why it didn't. I'm not going to speculate about it here. The fact that it was one of the nominees for best picture in 1983 should say something about the quality of this film. The story is based on Tom Wolfe's best-selling book of the same name. It is the story of the Mercury astronauts from their recruitment for the space program up to Gordon Cooper's last flight of the Mercury program. This is also a story of test pilots, some of whom never made it into the space program. Besides the fact that many of these pilots were killed testing airplanes, some were not considered to be astronaut material. The movie centers particularly on Chuck Yeager as the pilot's pilot. He's played by Sam Shepard in the movie. The real-life Chuck Yeager has a cameo role as Fred the bartender at Pancho's Happy Bottom Riding Club.

SAFE PASSAGE
by Ellyn Bache
Bache gives us an American family richly created and lovingly depicted.
On a chilly October morning, Mag and Patrick Singer awaken in their suburban Washington D.C. home to learn that the airport in Beirut has been bombed by Lebanese terrorists. Among the sixteen hundred Marines stationed there is Percival, one of their seven sons. Over the course of the next three days, as they wait to hear further news of Percival's fate, Mag and Patrick are joined by their six other sons in what becomes a vigil of patience and love, as well as a time for the Singers to make peace with their common past. The Singers' reunion is beset with turmoil, both comic and frightening. Painting "Full night" by Joel Barr
About the
Movie
SAFE PASSAGE
stars Susan Sarendon as Mag and Sam Shepard as Patrick. At four-thirty on Sunday morning Mag came up from sleep with her heart thumping and sweat pouring from her, the way she'd awakened years ago when her son Izzy was out delivering newspapers and she found him two blocks away lying on the street with a broken ankle. She sat up in bed, wide awake, sick to her stomach. She hated motherly premonitions; she thought she was through with them. Except for Simon, the seven boys were grown . . . .

SAM SHEPARD: STALKING HIMSELF is an intimate portrait of the man widely regarded as the most important American playwright since Edward Albee. He has written more than 45 plays, won 11 Obie awards, and his "Buried Child" was the first play to win the Pulitzer Prize without first appearing on Broadway. Shepard has also acted in several feature films, including THE RIGHT STUFF, for which Shepard earned an Academy Award nomination for the role of pilot Chuck Yeager.

Sam Shepard discusses a turning point in his work. Sam Shepard certainly has "the right stuff," but flying is far from his forte. In his first-ever television interview, Shepard acknowledges his fear of airplanes, reads from and discusses his works, and shares candid memories from his childhood and career. The documentary also interviews those who know Shepard well, including actors Ed Harris, Lois Smith, Gary Sinise, and Ethan Hawke. The result is a revealing and sensitive portrayal of one of the most articulate voices of our time.
GREAT PERFORMANCES continues its salute to Shepard with an encore presentation of TRUE WEST. The telecast, which premiered on AMERICAN PLAYHOUSE in 1984, stars John Malkovich and Gary Sinise. Adapted from the acclaimed Steppenwolf Theatre Company production of Shepard's 1980 play, the work focuses on the relationship between two brothers who seem to have little in common: Austin (Sinise) is a screenwriter on the verge of a breakthrough Hollywood deal, and Lee (Malkovich) is a drifter and cat burglar.

Sam Shepard Born Samuel Shepard Rogers (nicknamed "Steve") on November 5, 1943, in Fort Sheridan, Illinois, Sam Shepard would later change his namereportedly because "Steve Rogers was the name of the original Captain America." He would work as a stable hand, herdsman, orange picker, sheep shearer, bus boy, waiter and musician before beginning his career as a playwright in New York in 1964 with the Theatre Genesis production of two one-act plays, Cowboys and The Rock Garden , at St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery. A product of the 1960s counterculture, Shepard combines wild humor, grotesque satire, myth, and a sparse, haunting language to create a subversive pop art vision of America. His characters are typically loners and drifters caught between a mythical past and the mechanized present. In Cowboys , two buddies play what seems to be a game of cowboys and indians, re-enacting key episodes from Western mythologyepisodes which lead to decay, stasis, and the apparent death of one of the characters. His first full-length play

    Sam Shepard
    D ramaturgo y actor estadounidense. ©

      Synopsis: The third of Sam Shepard's "family" plays, "True West" is uncharacteristically traditional in its structure, but typically over the top in its story and style. The play tells the story of two brothers: Austin, a Hollywood screenwriter, and Lee, a small-time criminal. The play's encounter between the brothers explores the duality of human personality, and our primal capacity for violence. "True West" also holds a special place in Steppenwolf Theatre Co. history - it was the first time the company brought a production to the New York stage. Gary Sinise plays Austin, the screenwriter. Is Austin frightened of Lee or does he admire his brother's willingness to break the rules? "True West" Link:
