Although Shepard fired off those two golf balls in moon gravity which is about one-sixth of earth's ( moon fact sheet ), they did not go miles and miles and miles. Shepard later appended his estimate to drive distances in the 200 to 400 yard range. Still, not bad with one hand and encumbered by a suit that prevented a good pivot on the swing. Inducted in 1993 N aval aviator Alan Shepard lifted off from Pad 5 at Cape Canaveral, Florida, on May 5, 1961, at 9:34 a.m. to become the first American in space. The small Mercury capsule he named "Freedom 7" was propelled into space by a slim but powerful Redstone missile. The suborbital flight reached an altitude of 116.5 miles (space begins at 100 miles altitude or 500,000 feet) at a maximum speed of 5,180 miles per hour. In 15 minutes and 22 seconds, the flight covered a distance of 302 miles downrange. Born in East Derry, New Hampshire, on November 18, 1923, Shepard earned a bachelor's degree at the United States Naval Academy in 1944. He served aboard a naval destroyer prior to acceptance for flight training, and by 1950 was testing jets on aircraft carriers. In 1959 he was selected to be one of the original seven astro-nauts. Shepard served as Chief of the Astronaut Office, Johnson Space Center, from 1963 until 1969. In 1971, he commanded Apollo 14, the third manned mission to the moon, and became the fifth man to walk on its surface. He again served as Chief of the Astronaut Office from 1971 until 1974. He retired from the Navy at the rank of Rear Admiral.

Price $27.50 Customer Reviews This was one of the best books I've ever read. I found it to be fair and balanced towards all the individuals involved. I have to say that the author's writing style is conducive to a good read. This writer knows how to pace a story and keep the reader's interest. I will definitely keep an eye out for his future works. This book is not the powderpuff prose that used to surround the space program. This said, I must say that my respect for these men has not wavered a bit. Poorly written, riddled with inacuracies. If you reaal feel the need to read it, check it out from the library- it'll be much easier to return. On the one hand, this is a long-overdue biography of an American hero who never did make things easy for biographers. It shows us where Shepard came from, and how he wound up riding a fifteen-minute lob over the Atlantic, and playing golf on the moon, and it makes for fascinating reading.Unfortunately, the book is somewhat marred by numerous errors of detail that any expert on manned spaceflight history could have caught, and the occasional annoyingly awkward turn of phrase that any competent copy editor should have caught. Together, these give the author a less-than-authoritative tone. Then, too, even the typography of the book is slightly annoying: for the chapter titles and the page headers, somebody picked a truly ugly and amateurish-looking font, one that doesn't belong in any book.

He attended primary and secondary schools in his birthplace East Derry and in Derry New Hampshire ; received a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis in , an Honorary Master of Arts degree from Dartmouth College in , and Honorary Doctorate of Science from Miami University Oxford, Ohio ) in , and an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities from Franklin Pierce College in . Graduated Naval Test Pilot School in Naval War College Newport, Rhode Island in Shepard began his naval career after graduation from Annapolis on the destroyer Cogswell , deployed in the Pacific Ocean during World War II . He subsequently entered flight training at Corpus Christi, Texas and Pensacola, Florida , and received his wings in 1947. His next assignment was with Fighter Squadron 42 at Norfolk, Virginia
