Alan Bartlett Shepard, Jr. Meet the man... American Astronaut Born in East Derry, New Hampshire Nov. 18, 1923 He developed an interest in airplanes at a young age, enjoying building model airplanes and hanging around the local airport He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1944. He served on a destroyer during World War II after which he took flight training and became a Navy test pilot logging over 8000 hours of flight time. In 1959, he was named one of the first seven Mercury astronauts. On May 5, 1961, he became the first American launched into space. Shepard rode in the tiny Freedom 7 capsule on the historic sub-orbital flight to an altitude of 115 miles and 303 miles down range reaching a top speed of 5,180 miles per hour. 15 minutes later he landed in the Atlantic Ocean. Upon his return to the earth, he touched down only 160 feet (half of a football field) from the target point in the ocean. Shepard served (1963-69, 1971-74) as chief of the astronaut office for N.A.S.A. (National Aeronautics Space Administration) at the Johnson Space Center. In 1974, he retired from the Navy as a Rear Admiral and from NASA.

RADM. USN Pioneer U.S. Astronaut Born East Derry, New Hampshire Alan Bartlett Shepard, Jr. graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1944, becoming a Naval Aviator in 1947. In 1950, he attended the U.S. Navy Test Pilot School where he became an instructor. He also attended the Naval War College, graduating in 1957. His outstanding record as a test pilot with several thousand hours of complex experimental flying played a major role in his selection as one of the original seven U.S. astronauts in 1959. After two years of extensive training, Shepard, piloted the Mercury spacecraft Freedom 7 through its first successful sub-orbital flight. Although the flight lasted only 15 minutes, the capsule reached an altitude of 16 miles and speed of 5,180 miles per hour. This historic flight was the beginning of American's manned space programs.

NASA/AP Moon Walk: Astronaut Alan Shepard on the Lunar Surface in 1971.
Wednesday, Jul. 22, 1998
WASHINGTON: Another of the high-flying seven has fallen. Alan Shepard, who in 1961 became the first American in space and, a decade after that, perhaps rescued the space program from oblivion, died Tuesday night at age 74. "There are few people with a more exalted place in the pantheon," says TIME space correspondent Jeffrey Kluger. "He was the first. But even more remarkable was his second trip." After 10 years on the ground with ear trouble, Shepard was 47 in 1971 when, with very little training, he took the Apollo 14 lunar module back up and spent 33 hours on the moon's surface. "At that time, on the heels of the Apollo 13 near-disaster, people were asking whether space was worth the risk. Shepard succeeded at a very critical time for NASA." Of course, while he was up there he also hit a couple of golf balls, and perhaps that's the way Americans who watched it will remember him. But Kluger says that Shepard was known as "the ice commander" for good reason. "He was either all business or he was this genial swashbuckling rocket jock, and he would switch back and forth without warning, according to his own internal clock." Whatever foibles this space pioneer carried inside him, they never poisoned the camaraderie among the original seven Mercury astronauts named by NASA in April 1959. Not too long ago, says Kluger, Shepard was talking to John Glenn about Glenn's upcoming space flight. "Glenn told him that it could be Shepard going up, except he wasn't old enough."

The Power of Not Giving Up Took Him to the Moon By: John Shepler In the powdery surface of the moon at Fra Mauro lie two golf balls. They are waiting to be pitched high into the inky starlit vacuum and on to their next roll, some hundreds of yards farther along the surface. They are waiting for a worthy golfer. They are waiting for someone special to pick up where Alan Shepard, the man who first struck them, left off. They are waiting for that one man or woman who wants it badly, the one who just won't give up until they've played the course at Fra Mauro. Alan Shepard was one of those kids who hung around airports when aviation was just getting established in the thirties. After school and on weekends, he'd high-tail it to the landing field so he could help push airplanes in and out of hangars. Sometimes the pilots would let him sit at the controls and work the stick. When they felt it was time for a bigger reward they'd take Alan flying with them. He knew then that aviation was going to be his life. It was just a matter of sticking with it. Alan Shepard didn't have a privileged upbringing, nor did he suffer great hardships. He started off just like most of us. Actually, his early education was more in the setting of an earlier era. The rural schoolhouse in East Derry, New Hampshire had one teacher, six grades and one room. Alan

THE RIGHT STUFF
July 22, 1998
The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer Transcript Space explorer Alan Shepard, the first American in space, died of leukemia at the age of 74. NewsHour essayist Roger Rosenblatt shares a passage of Tom Wolfe's novel The Right Stuff , written about Shepard, in his memory. JIM LEHRER: Finally tonight remembering astronaut Alan Shepard. Kwame Holman begins. KWAME HOLMAN: In 1959, Alan Shepard and six other men were chosen from a pool of 110 pilots who volunteered to go into space. NASA picked Shepard to guide its very first manned space flight. On May 5, 1961, Shepard became the first American in space. He flew for 15 minutes aboard the Mercury Freedom 7 Spacecraft and splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean. In an interview years later the former Navy test pilot explained his desire to be an astronaut. ALAN SHEPARD: I think all those who volunteered and certainly all of those who ended up the finals like I did really sort of looked at it as an extension of what they're doing. See, as a test pilot you sort of keep flying bigger and better and faster and farther and higher, et cetera, et cetera. In other words, you're expanding, as we call it, the boundary of the envelope, the envelope being the curve describing where thou shalt not pass if you're flying an airplane. And I think all of the original seven looked at it that way. It's not a brand new frontier really. It's just taking what we have and pushing it out. And I think all of us looked at it as a natural extension of what we'd been doing-flying strange-looking airplanes, and that sort of thing.

North Scott Community Schools: The district covers approximately two-hundred-ten square miles with a population of approximately 2,800 school-age children. Its boundaries roughly are the Wapsi River on the north, the Mississippi River on the east, Interstate 80 on the south, and on the west by a line running generally between the towns of Maysville and Dixon. The district was formed in l957, when the current Senior High School was constructed. Four elementary schools in the district were all first occupied during the l967-68 school year. The Junior High School in the city of Eldridge was completed and has been in use since l975-76. Neil Armstrong Elementary School in Park View opened one year later in the fall of l976. Alan Shepard Elementary School Alan Shepard is one of North Scott's five elementary schools with an enrollment of approximately 320 students. We have been a leader in the state in having acquired North Central Association (NCA) accreditation for our school and in helping others to do so. We work with students from pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. The school is named in honor of Alan Shepard, one of our nation's first astronauts. It was first occupied in the fall of 1967. Philosophy of Alan Shepard School Alan Shepard School exists for the benefit and welfare of children, our most important resource. As formal education is the responsibility of the school, our primary goal is to provide an educational environment which enables each child to attain his/her highest intellectual achievement. Cultural, socio-emotional, and psycho-motor development of the child must occur in conjunction with the intellectual growth.
