Alan B. Shepard, Jr Freedom 7
1st American into space
Rocket:
Redstone, MR-7 Spacecraft: No. 7 Launch: 05/05/1961, 9:34:00 a.m. EST Landing: 05/05/1961, 9:49:28 a.m. EST Duration: 15 min, 28 sec Altitude: 116.5 statute miles Orbits: Distance: 303 statute miles Velocity: 5,134 mph Max G: Recovery ship: Lake Champlain The main scientific objective of project Mercury was to determine man's capabilities in a space environment and in those environments to which he will be subject upon going into and returning from space. A few of the basic flight problems included: The development of an automatic escape system, vehicle control during insertion, behavior of space systems, evaluation of pilots capabilities in space, in flight monitoring, retrofire and reentry maneuvers and landing and recovery. The name "Freedom Seven" was Alan Shepard's choice. "Freedom" because it was patriotic and "Seven" because it was the seventh Mercury capsule produced. It also represented the seven Mercury astronauts. To help relieve any tension Shepard might have built up before his flight, Glenn pasted a little sign on the spacecraft instrument panel, reading "No handball playing here." This bit of levity hearkened back to their training days. At T-15 minutes it was necessary to hold the count again to make a final check of the real-time trajectory computer. A small electrical part had a problem and this resulted in an hour and twenty six minute delay. Shepard was on top of the Redstone for so long now that he had to urinate. "Gordo!" he said, talking to Gordon Cooper, a fellow Mercury Seven astronaut and principal prelaunch communicator. "Go, Alan." "Man, I got to pee." "You what?" "You heard me. I've got to pee. I've been up here forever."

May 5, 1961. In the predawn darkness, a 59-foot- (18-meter-) tall Redstone missile stood in the glare of floodlights. Vapor spewed from the rocket's side as its tanks were pressurized with fuel and supercold liquid oxygen. Not far away, in a trailer that served as a suiting-up room, Alan Shepard prepared to ride that rocket. When he emerged, clad in a silvery spacesuit and carrying a portable ventilator, he paused to look up at the gleaming rocket. Minutes later, he was squeezing into the tiny cabin of his Mercury spacecraft, which he had christened Freedom 7. Lying on his back in a formfitting couch, Shepard watched as technicians sealed the spacecraft's side hatch. "Okay, buster," he told himself, "you volunteered for this thing."

ALAN SHEPARD Astronaut A former Navy test pilot, Shepard was one of the original seven astronauts chosen by NASA for its Mercury program. He became the first American in space on 5 May 1961, when he went aloft in the Freedom 7 capsule for a 15-minute sub-orbital flight. ( John Glenn later became the first American to circle the entire globe in space; earlier Ham the Chimp had been the first American primate in space.) The flight made Shepard a national hero. He was disqualified from early moon missions due to an inner ear disorder, but he persisted and was given command of Apollo 14. In 1971 Shepard and fellow astronaut Edgar Mitchell landed on the moon, becoming the fifth and sixth men to walk there. While on the moon, Shepard playfully pulled out a golf ball and whacked it across the lunar surface. He retired from the space program in 1974, also retiring from the Navy with the rank of rear admiral.
Extra credit : The first man in space was Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin , who orbited the Earth on 12 April 1961.

July 23, 1998 OBITUARY
Alan B. Shepard Jr. Is Dead at 74; First American to Travel in Space
By JOHN NOBLE WILFORD lan B. Shepard Jr., the first American to fly in space, lifting national spirits at a decisive moment of cold war anxiety, and later one of only 12 astronauts to walk on the Moon, died late Tuesday night at a hospital in Monterey, Calif. He was 74 and lived in Houston and Pebble Beach, Calif. The family would not disclose the cause of death, saying only that it came after a long illness. But another former astronaut, Senator John Glenn of Ohio, said Mr. Shepard had been suffering from leukemia. On the morning of May 5, 1961, Mr. Shepard became an immediate American hero. A lean, crew-cut former Navy test pilot, then 37, he began the day lying on his back in a cramped Mercury capsule atop a seven-story Redstone rocket filled with explosive fuel. After four tense hours of weather and mechanical delays, he was shot into the sky on a 15-minute flight that grazed the fringes of space, at an altitude of 115 miles, and ended in a splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean 302 miles downrange from Cape Canaveral, Fla. Though not much by today's standards, the brief suborbital flight had stopped a whole country in its tracks, waiting anxiously at radios and television sets. When the message of success came through with a phrase that would enter the idiom, ''Everything is A-O.K.!'' everyone seemed to let out a collective sigh of relief.

Alan Shepard, First American in Space (Grades K-12)
May 5 http://images.jsc.nasa.gov/iams/html/pao/mr3.htm
Official NASA portrait of Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard. In 1961, I lived in a small town in Florida called Neptune Beach. On May 5, I remember excitedly watching a small glow rise into the sky to the south and knowing that we had just sent a man into space. That man was Alan B. Shepard, Jr., one of the original seven Mercury astronauts. He was the first American to dare the unknown and enter space. His flight that day was a spectacular feat, even if he didn't even orbit Earth and even though the flight lasted only 15 minutes. That was Shepard's first flight, but not his last. As part of the Apollo 14 crew, he landed on the moon on February 1971. He became the fifth person to walk on the moon and the first to hit a golf ball there that in his words went for "miles and miles and miles." I guess there is a lot to be said for the effect of the moon's gravity. Shepard died in 1998 at the age of 74.

ALAN SHEPARD, FIRST AMERICAN ASTRONAUT, DIES AT 74
Alan B. Shepard, Jr., the first American to fly in space and one of only 12 humans who walked on the Moon, died Tuesday night after a lengthy illness in Monterey, CA. He was 74. Shepard died at Community Hospital on the Monterey Peninsula, according to his family. The cause of death was not disclosed. Funeral services are pending. "The entire NASA family is deeply saddened by the passing of Alan Shepard. NASA has lost one of its greatest pioneers; America has lost a shining star," said NASA Administrator Daniel S. Goldin. "Alan Shepard will be remembered, always, for his accomplishments of the past; being one of the original Mercury astronauts, for being the first American to fly in space, and for being one of only 12 Americans ever to step on the Moon. He should also be remembered as someone who, even in his final days, never lost sight of the future," Goldin added. "On behalf of the space program Alan Shepard helped launch, and all those that the space program has and will inspire, we send our deepest condolences to his wife, Louise, their children, and the rest of the Shepard family.
