Nickname: Al/Jose Selected as an astronaut in April 1959 Pilot, Mercury MR-3 Commander, Apollo 14 Alan has the distinction of being the first American to journey into space. He flew on two space flights, Mercury MR-3 and Apollo. Shepard made his Apollo 14 spaceflight as the Spacecraft Commander with Stuart A. Roosa and Edgar D. Mitchell. During his stay on the moon, Shepard played some golf, hitting two golf balls with an improvised club. In his bulky spacesuit he could only manage two short shots of 200 yards and 40 yards, contrary to his hope of being able to hit them for miles in the low gravity of the lunar surface. Shepard spent 9 hours, 12 minutes outside the lunar landing module and traveled 4,770 feet away from the spacecraft. After 33 hours and 30 minutes on the moon's surface, Shepard and Mitchell lifted off and rejoined the command module. Back

Capitalist Man on the Moon's Back Nine
Alan Shepard in June, 1961 became the first American to fly in space and in that cold-war permeated year, he represented the best that capitalism could produce. A few weeks before Shepard's flight, the Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gargarin had been the first man ever to orbit Planet Earth. Gargarin's flight was far longer, his rocket bigger. But NASA spun Shepard's flight as a clash of ideologies: what mattered was that the capitalist astronaut could and did make limited decisions about his capsule's maneuvers while the communist cosmonaut was a passive passenger whose path was decided by a committee. Of such minutia were the rhetorical stakes of the arms race composed: we, free men; they, automata. Gargarin's orbit in April, 1961 humiliated the US defense establishment as surely as Russia's pioneering satellite Sputnik had four years earlier. The US had felt pressured to step up its timetable - Shepard's initial flight in the Mercury Freedom VII was to have taken place months later. Even so Shepard's suborbital effort clearly didn't match the Russians. JFK, three weeks after Shepard had safely splashed down, promised to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade. They own Siberia; We will own the Moon. Shepard was among the best of the US test pilots, and he was a steady and impressive personality. "I want to be first because I want to be first," he said before he flew. And they said the Russians were automata.

INTERVIEW
February 1, 1991
Houston, Texas
We're talking with two of the pioneers of space travel. Alan Shepard piloted America's first manned space mission. Maxime Faget designed Freedom 7, the Mercury space capsule that Alan Shepard rode into space on May 5, 1961.
Starting with you, Admiral Shepard, what were you like as a kid growing up?
I thought I was pretty normal, I did chores around the farm, had my own newspaper route to make money to buy a bicycle. Of course, in our grade school, in those days, there were no organized sports at all. We just went out and ran around the school yard for recess. I always felt I was pretty normal. I did what I had to do around home, and did what I had to do in school. It's a long, long way from a one-room country school house in New Hampshire to the moon. Is that a journey you ever thought you'd make? No, I didn't. Certainly when I was in the one-room country school, my ambition was just to get through with a creditable performance. Even in those days, a one-room schoolhouse with one teacher for six grades was unusual. Of course, I came from a rural community, and that was the school we had. I think it was beneficial to me. No one grade was reciting continuously, so I think I learned more in the first grade about the second grade, and consequently I only spent five years there. I'd like to say I was smart enough to finish six grades in five years, but I think perhaps the teacher was just glad to get rid of me.

Alan Shepard
Wow! Alan Shepard was one of seven men chosen from over 500 candidates to be a member of the first group of astronauts in 1959. Alan Shepard was born in 1923 in New Hampshire. He attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland where he graduated in 1944. Shepard served on a destroyer during World War II and was a Navy test pilot at the time he was selected to join the Astronaut Corps. He became the first American to enter space on May 5,1961. Though Shepard spent only 5 minutes in actual space aboard Freedom 7 , he laid the groundwork for the United States to become the great innovator in space exploration we know today. Alan Shepard was grounded from 1963 to 1969 due to an inner ear ailment. After treatment, he was able to return to the corps of active astronauts and became the fifth man to walk on the Moon in 1971. While on the Moon Shepard played golf with a club he had carried onboard the lunar spacecraft of Apollo 14 . Following his Moon adventure, he became an admiral in the United States Navy, the first astronaut to ever achieve such a rank. In 1974, Shepard retired from the astronaut corps and the Navy. After retirement, he successfully entered the business world guided by the same dedication with which he approached his space career. Alan Bartlett Shepard, Jr. died in California on July 22, 1998.
A Question
Alan Shepard was truly a space pioneer who had "all the right stuff". What prepared him to be America's first man in space?

Alan B. Shepard, Jr. was born and raised in East Derry, New Hampshire. His father was a retired Army officer. Alan grew up on the family farm and attended East Derry's one-room schoolhouse. As a boy he did odd jobs at the local airfield to learn about airplanes. An excellent student, Shepard won an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. After graduation, Ensign Shepard served on the destroyer Cogswell during the closing months of World War II. At war's end, he married Louise Brewer, whom he had met while attending the Naval Academy. Shepard was so eager to receive his wings and pilot's license that he studied at a civilian flying school in his spare time while attending naval flight training at Corpus Christi, Texas and Pensacola, Florida. After receiving his wings, he served with the 42nd Fighter Squadron for several tours of duty aboard aircraft carriers in the Mediterranean. In 1950, Shepard entered the U.S. Navy Test Pilot School in Patuxent, Maryland. After qualifying as a test pilot, he tested high-altitude aircraft and in-flight fueling systems, and made some of the first landings on angled carrier decks. He served as operations officer of the 193rd Fighter Squadron on two tours of the Western Pacific, and as an instructor at the Navy Test Pilot School. After graduation from the Naval War College at Newport, Rhode Island in 1958, Alan Shepard became aircraft readiness officer on the staff of the Commander in Chief of the Atlantic fleet.

ALAN G. SHEPARD, M.D.
BOTULINUM TOXIN TREATMENT OF HEADACHE, HEMIFACIAL SPASM, TORTICOLLIS, AND PAINFUL SPASTICITY
Botulinum toxin or "Botox" is a potent neuromuscular paralyzing agent that has emerged as an effective therapeutic agent for treating patients with muscle spasms. These conditions may include hemifacial spasm, headache, torticollis, painful spasticity that may result from a stroke, multiple sclerosis, tumor, and some forms of dystonia. Administration of Botox is performed in the office as an outpatient procedure and may take anywhere from five to thirty minutes. Side effects are rare and usually reversible. The procedure is covered by medicare and most other insurances. Further discussion of these problems is available to anybody who feels they may have one of the above conditions.
MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS
Multiple sclerosis is a disorder that commonly affects people between the ages of twenty and forty years of life. There are different forms of this condition. The symptoms may range from very mild to quite severe. This condition may be difficult to diagnose and frequently the history, clinical examination, and laboratory studies are required to be confident that a person has this illness. Dr. Shepard has significant experience in diagnosing and treating multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating conditions. He is currently prescribing Avonex, 4-Amino Pyridine, Beta-Interferon, and other treatments for multiple sclerosis. Please contact Dr. Shepard if you have further questions about this conditions.
