A BIOGRAPHY OF ROBERT GOULD SHAW
by Kathy Dhalle Robert Gould Shaw was born in Boston on October 10, 1837, the only son of Francis George and Sarah Blake Sturgis Shaw. His grandfather Robert G. Shaw was a merchant who had successfully invested in the growing commerce of the country. There were four other children in the family... all girls Anna, Josephine, Susannah and Ellen. Shaw's father had no need to work to support his family and so he worked for the good of the people. Their participation in anti-slavery activities increased as the years passed and they counted among their friends such individuals as William Lloyd Garrison, Gov. John A. Andrew, Charles Sumner, Lydia Marie Child and Wendell Phillips. When Robert was five, his father bought a large estate in West Roxbury adjacent to Brook Farm, site of an experimental Utopian society. Brook Farm inhabitants hoped to experience a more wholesome, simple way of life. Shaw's father had contributed money to the farm and was close personal friends with George Ripley, the founder. So it wasn't surprising that the family also spent much of their time there, sharing the company of such notables as Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Daily Bulletin ONTARIO Robert Shaw, the dominant figure in American choral music who died Monday, was remembered by Chaffey High School classmates as being someone who showed musical brilliance at an early age. Mr. Shaw, 82, graduated from Chaffey High in 1933. He was best known as conductor of the Robert Shaw Chorale, which performed around the world. He also was conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony and the Opera Company of Boston. He held annual choral institutes in France and at Carnegie Hall. Mr. Shaw died in New Haven, Conn., of a stroke. He was visiting Yale to see a production of Samuel Beckett's ''Endgame,'' which his son Thomas directed and acted in. As early as 1943 Shaw was named "America's greatest chorale conductor" by the National Association of Composers and Conductors. Marjorie (Ferguson) Stamm, who graduated with Mr. Shaw and attended the Ontario church where his father was a minister, said singing was in his blood.

Robert Shaw dead at 82
By Wendell Brock, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Robert Shaw, the man who taught America to sing and the single most important figure in Atlanta's cultural history, died at 2:05 a.m. today at Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut. He was 82.
Nola Frink, Shaw's assistant of many years, said Shaw was at Yale on Saturday night to see his youngest son direct a student production of Samuel Beckett's "Endgame."
"During the play, Mr. Shaw had a massive stroke," said Frink. His son, Thomas; his daughter, Johanna; and his stepson, Alex Hitz, were all at his bedside.
As leader of the Robert Shaw Chorale, he established the world's first professional chorus and set new standards for disciplined, powerful choral singing.

The Civil War
Robert Gould Shaw, a 26-year old, hailing from an affluent Boston family with abolitionist roots, was in the Union Army, cited as an officer, with some military training.
He was put in command of, and organized, the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. There was much controversy and ridicule regarding the unit as a whole, which was made up of free black soldiers. Robert Shaw sought to buck the politically correct. He did what he felt was honorable and right. Shaw stood by his men through all the controversy, he saw they were properly trained, fought for their right to obtain the proper armaments for battle, proper clothing, and equal pay as white soldiers. He took charge of his men with authority. His respect for them did not take a back seat to discipline. The bond that formed produced one of the most celebrated black soldier regiments of the Civil War.
On July 18, 1863, Col. Robert G. Shaw, led his men on the heroic, yet unsuccessful, attack on the Confederate secured Fort Wagner, South Carolina, instead of placing himself in the customary position at the rear.
As the 600 men of the 54th Massachusetts stormed Fort Wagner, they were met with heavy shelling, but they kept moving. As he neared the top of the parapet, Shaw shouted “Onward, 54th!”

To Work With a Master
Master and apprentice. One has a lifetime of knowledge, skill, and the hard-earned perfection of his art. The other has a boundless desire to learn as much as possible of the master's wisdom. Robert Shaw and Kristofer Johnson. Shaw is one of the nation's most renowned choral conductors. Johnson, from Meridian, Mississippi, is a junior voice major in the Conservatory who aspires to a career in choral conducting. Master and apprentice worked together when Robert Shaw, now music director emeritus and conductor laureate of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, was on campus in early November to lead "A Tribute to Robert Fountain," a four-day event that culminated in a concert of works by Stravinsky, Mozart, Haydn, and Wagner. It was an experience that Johnson won't soon forget. "Rehearsals were insane," said Johnson, the tenor section leader of the Oberlin College Choir. "They were intense, exciting, and wonderful. I can't say enough about what a brilliant musician he is." Johnson studies vocal performance with Gerald Crawford and conducting with Edward Maclary. Shaw directed members of the Oberlin College Choir, the Musical Union, and the Oberlin Orchestra, as well as a chorus of 150 alumni who returned to campus to honor the memory of Robert Fountain. Proceeds from the ticket revenue benefited the Robert Fountain Memorial Merit Scholarship in Choral Music.
