care of Boston Athenaeum. Robert Gould Shaw is best remembered in history as the brave colonel who led the 54th Massachusetts in their fearless charge at Fort Wagner. But what makes him an extraordinary individual lies beyond this noble deed. In what would be a few months with the regiment, Shaw's remarkable personal growth found him transformed from "an ordinary mortal" to a compassionate and selfless leader who "laid down his life" for his men and "for a race." This is what makes him a true hero. The Biography of Robert Gould Shaw "He Laid Down His Life for a Race" Robert Gould Shaw's Pages The Raid on Darien, Georgia

Reprinted from the July 1966 issue of Pomona Today. Conductor Robert Shaw
From Fred Waring to the Atlanta Symphony, via the San Diego and Cleveland Orchestras and, of course, the world-famous Robert Shaw Chorale Being "discovered" on the campus of Pomona College by a visiting impresario is undoubtedly the dream of many music and drama students as they strut and fret their hour upon the stage in undergraduate productions, though very rarely does the dream come true. But Robert Shaw '38 began his distinguished career in just that way, although he hadn't exactly dreamed about itand in fact came close to rejecting the opportunity altogether. That year Fred Waring came to the Pomona campus for the filming of the musical "Variety Show." He watched Shaw conduct the Glee Club, and was so impressed that he immediately offered him a job involving full charge of the Waring Glee Club. Shaw was reluctant to give up his divinity studies and declined Waring's offer, but he was interested enough to write the bandleader later asking for a summer job. Waring sent him $150 for the trip to New York, and Shaw set off (candidly returning most of the trip allowance to Waring upon his arrival). The work with Waring proved so interesting that Shaw decided not to return to Pomona in the fall, and he was soon busily engaged preparing five radio shows a week.

Tribute to Robert Shaw Robert Lawson Shaw, 1916-1999 One of the most significant American choral conductors, Robert Shaw, has left us, and the news spread quickly throughout the choral world. ChoralNet was contacted first by the office of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to electronically publish the official obituary, and soon we received many inquiries and notes from others who had just heard the news. We set up an official channel for electronic communications on our ChoralTalk e-mail list, which is also connected to the Usenet newsgroup, "rec.music.makers.choral". The following links are a mixture of official and unofficial reactions to the passing of this choral luminary. http://extlab1.entnem.ufl.edu/olustee/54th_MS_inf.html
Fifty-fourth Massachusetts Infantry
The Fifty-fourth Massachusetts was organized in March, 1863 at Camp Meigs, Readville, Massachusetts by Robert Gould Shaw , twenty-six year old member of a prominent Boston abolitionist family. Shaw had earlier served in the Seventh New York National Guard and the Second Massachusetts Infantry, and was appointed colonel of the Fifty-fourth in February 1863 by Massachusetts governor John A. Andrew.
As one of the first black units organized in the northernstates, the Fifty-fourth was the object of great interest and curiosity, and its performance would be considered an important indication of the possibilities surrounding the use of blacks in combat. The regiment was composed primarily of free blacks from throughout the north, particularly Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. Amongst its recruits were Lewis N. Douglass and Charles Douglass , sons of the famous ex-slave and abolitionist, Frederick Douglass
Drawing from the
Olustee Post Card Set
After a period of recruiting and training, the unit proceeded to the Department of the South, arriving at Hilton Head, South Carolina, on June 3, 1863. Soon after it saw its first action at James Island. The regiment earned its greatest fame on July 18, 1863, when it led the unsuccessful and controversial assault on the Confederate positions at Battery Wagner . In this desperate attack, the Fifty-fourth was placed in the vanguard and 281 men of the regiment became casualties (54 were killed or fatally wounded and another 48 were never accounted for). Shaw, the regiment's young colonel, died on the crest of the enemy parapet, shouting, "Forward, Fifty-fourth!"

Are (some) Unitarians Buddhists Without Knowing It? A Talk Delivered to the Lakehead Unitarian Fellowship
by Robert Farmer. This talk is occasioned by an experience I recently had at a Zen meditation retreat in the Southern Appalachians. About 30 people from over the Southeast were involved. At the first evening meal (before silence was declared) I ate with four individuals who turned out either to be Unitarians, or to be people who routinely sat zazen in Unitarian facilities. I have since that time noted other evidence of a close but informal relationship between Unitarianism and western Buddhism, especially the Zen tradition. I understand that some Unitarian ministers consider themselves Buddhists. I have become interested in this alliance and wish to examine its basis this morning. I wish to note at the outset that I am neither a Unitarian scholar nor a Buddhist scholar; my comments will no doubt reflect this condition. In the best professorial tradition my talk will be divided into three parts: The evolution of Unitarianism in North America.

back Robert Shaw Robert Shaw in his favourite pub, Paddy Walsh's Reprinted from Irish Press, August 31st 1978. Robert Shaw, whose death at the early age of 51 will be sincerely regretted, was one of those strangers who win their place in Irish hearts in a way that is not given to many people. His secret was that he liked people and in consequence they liked him. Many people will remember his description on RTE a couple of weeks ago of Tourmakeady in Co Mayo as possible the only completely unspoiled place in which he had ever lived. His home for the last three years had been the Plunkett family home, close by which he suffered the sudden heart attack from which he died. Shaw was, as was Bing Crosby, who had a much longer connection with this country, a man of simple tastes; indeed one of his staged ambitions was to buy a public house in the Tourmakeady district and serve behind the bar. Tourmakeady is, of course, an Irish-speaking area and Shaw, as befitted a native of Cornwall, was deeply interested in the Celtic tongues. He would have preferred to be remembered by his books, but most of his admirers will associate his name with his remarkably successful films, notably as the shark-hunter in "Jaws", though his Henry the Eighth in " A Man For All Seasons" deeply impressed the critics. There are many people in the Tourmakeady area, of course, who never saw Robert Shaw in any of his famous films but who knew him and cherished his friendship. To them he was not a star, just a neighbour, a friend, a man who would go behind the counter in his local pub and draw his own pin when business was unusually brisk.

A Tale of Two Leaders: Doing the right thing for the wrong reason, and vice versa
Thursday 2003/03/27

First of all, let's get one thing straight. Saddam Hussein is a menace. The world would be a much better place without him. As H.G. Wells once said of Lenin, "he ought to be killed by some sanitary moral authority." Anyone who thinks that Iraq should be left alone so that Saddam can continue to do what he's done for the past quarter-century is a lost cause, an idealist whose continued existence on this planet must be due to sheer dumb luck, 'cause it can't be attributed to having a clue and using it. You might as well say it's OK for husbands to abuse their children and rape and murder their wives as say it's OK to leave Iraq alone with Saddam at the helm. Any peaceniks who disagree with the above, come see me for an appointment with the Cluebat. Given all the above, what do I make of the events of the last few months?
