Call Him Malik Shabazz!
El Hajj Malik Shabazz was a person whose life span encompassed several stages of development. He evolved from a young man known as Malcolm Little to a street hustler known as "Detroit Red." "Detroit Red" became Malcolm X, a minister in the Nation of Islam (NOI). Malcolm's growth didn't stop there. While a member of the NOI, the name Shabazz was given to him by the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. After leaving the Nation and making pilgrimage to Mecca, where upon the title El Hajj is bestowed, he took the name Malik. At the height of his growth and development from the time of his death he was known among the Muslim community as El Hajj Malik Shabazz, a true Muslim focused on Allah, the creator.
What Became of the Nation of Islam?
Thousands of African-Americans all across the United States joined the Nation of Islam under the leadership of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. After the death of Elijah Muhammad, his son Wallace D. Mohammed assumed leadership of the NOI. There was no disagreement as to who would lead the NOI. Louis Farrakhan and Muhammad Ali were among those who unanimously pledged their allegiance to the new leadership. W.D. Mohammed taught the community to follow the Qur'an and the practices of the Prophet Mohammed(SAW). The community was renamed The World Community of Al Islam in the West and later the American Muslim Mission. Minister Farrakhan later left the community and restarted the Nation of Islam. The members of the original Nation of Islam merged with the worldwide Muslim community. Farrakhan and his followers vacillate between the old teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad (and his teacher Fard Muhammad) and the Qur'an and the ways of Prophet Mohammed (SAW).

Malcolm X Civil Right Leader
Biography:
Malcolm X (nee Malcolm Little) was born on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska and was shot to death in Harlem's Audubon Ballroom in New York City on February 21, 1965. Malcolm was the son of the Reverend Earl and Louise Little. He married Betty Shabazz and had six children.
John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, and Malcolm X were all assassinated martyrs of the 1960's. These four men believed in the possibility for social change and the necessity of that change. Of the four, Malcolm X came from the humblest roots, was the most radical, and displayed the most anger. He often said, "All Negroes are angry and I am the angriest."
Many Americans, white and black, were afraid of Malcolm X's seemingly violent side. Unlike the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Malcolm X believed in using self-defense against overt racism. The life of Malcolm X cannot be summed up in a few simple phrases because of the complex nature of the man and the philosophical shifts he made in search of social truth. He had three names: Malcolm Little, Malcolm X, and El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz. Each name has its own history.
Malcolm Little's father was a Baptist minister and a follower of Marcus Garvey, leader of the "Back to Africa" movement popular among African Americans in the 1920's. One of Malcolm's first memories was the burning of his house by the Ku Klux Klan. His father was murdered when Malcolm was still a child, allegedly by the Klan.

Marshall is one of the best known lawyers in the history of civil rights in America. He started his career in private practice and later served as chief counsel for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) legal office. He became the first director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, Inc. (LDF) in 1940 and remained in that position for 21 years. In 1954 Marshall and his legal team prevailed in the landmark Supreme Court case, “Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas,” that struck down segregation in public schools. Marshall made history again in 1967, when he was sworn in as the first African-American justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. His 24-year tenure was marked by his commitment to defending constitutional rights and affirmative action and by his strong opposition to the death penalty.

Letter From Mecca Following are excerpts from a letter by Malcolm X after his first pilgrimage:
Never have I witnessed such overwhelming spirit of hospitality and the true brotherhood as is practiced by people of all colors and races here in this Ancient Holy Land, the home of Abraham, Muhammad, and all the other Prophets of the Holy Scriptures. For the past week, I have been utterly speechless and spellbound by the graciousness I see displayed all around me by people of all colors.
There were tens of thousands of pilgrims, from all over the world. They were of all colors, from blue-eyed blonds to black skinned Africans. But we were all participating in the same ritual displaying a spirit of unity and brotherhood that my experiences in America had led me to believe never could exist between the white and the non-white
All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the Worlds.
Sincerely,
El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (Malcolm X)

By Malcolm X "We want freedom by any means necessary.
We want justice by any means necessary.
We want equality by any means necessary."
" The thing that I would like to impress upon every Afro-American leader is that no kind of action in this country is ever going to bear fruit unless that action is tied in with the overall international struggle" Through these speeches from the last year of his life, Malcolm X takes his place as one of the twentieth century's out standing revolutionary thinkers and leaders Malcolm sought, as he put it, to "internationalize" the fight against racism. He condemned Washington's war in Vietnam, solidarized with the African freedom struggle, and championed the revolutionary victories of the Chinese and Cuban people. Readers will follow the evolution of Malcolm's view on building political alliances, Black-white intermarriage, woman's rights, capitalism and socialism, and self-defense against racist terror gangs all in his own words.
