Malcolm X's (Al-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz) Letter from Mecca
THE PILGRIMAGE TO MAKKAH
When he was in Makkah, Al-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz wrote a letter to his loyal assistants in Harlem... from his heart: "Never have I witnessed such sincere hospitality and overwhelming spirit of true brotherhood as is practiced by people of all colors and races here in this ancient Holy Land, the home of Abraham, Muhammad and all the other Prophets of the Holy Scriptures. For the past week, I have been utterly speechless and spellbound by the graciousness I see displayed all around me by people of all colors. "I have been blessed to visit the Holy City of Mecca, I have made my seven circuits around the Ka'ba, led by a young Mutawaf named Muhammad, I drank water from the well of the Zam Zam. I ran seven times back and forth between the hills of Mt. Al-Safa and Al Marwah. I have prayed in the ancient city of Mina, and I have prayed on Mt. Arafat." "There were tens of thousands of pilgrims, from all over the world. They were of all colors, from blue-eyed blondes to black-skinned Africans. But we were all participating in the same ritual, displaying a spirit of unity and brotherhood that my experiences in America had led me to believe never could exist between the white and non-white." "America needs to understand Islam, because this is the one religion that erases from its society the race problem. Throughout my travels in the Muslim world, I have met, talked to, and even eaten with people who in America would have been considered white - but the white attitude was removed from their minds by the religion of Islam. I have never before seen sincere and true brotherhood practiced by all colors together, irrespective of their color."

A little over thirty years ago, a man's life was cut prematurely short on a stage in a Harlem Ballroom. A few months short of his fortieth birthday and at a major turning point in his life, this man was killed not so much for who he had been, or even who he was, but for who he might eventually become. The Message is delighted to bring its readers the true understanding and legacy of our beloved brother Al Hajj Malik El Shabazz. Our model of true leadership, an example of sincerity, personal discipline, courage and clarity of vision. Let us all study his life to draw inspiration and strength. "I believe that it would be almost impossible to find anywhere in America a black man who has lived further down in the mud of human society than I have; or a black man who has been any more ignorant than I have; or a black man who has suffered more anguish during his life than I have. But it is only after the deepest darkness that the greatest joy can come; it is only after slavery and prison that the sweetest appreciation of freedom can come."

THE BLACK BOOK:
THE TRUE POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY OF MALCOLM X
(El Hajj Malik El Shabazz)
ed. by Y.N. Kly
ISBN: 0-932863-03-5, 104 pp., 1986, $9.95 Sixth printing Now in its sixth printing, this highly popular book on the great African-American Muslim illustrates the influence of his Islamic faith and his international experience upon his constantly expanding political vision. The first to present a comprehensive analysis that integrates the developing vision of the man, Malcolm X, with the man he became, El Hajj Malik El Shabazz, it provides an in-depth analysis of Malcolm's directives on why the African-American struggle for national liberation and self-determination is necessary, how it should be carried on, and why it can succeed.
"Numerous works have been written on the life and ideals of Malcolm X by a marxist, liberal, communist, capitalist or Black Power follower which, obviously, paid scant regard to the total Islamic commitment of Malcolm X. Therefore, this contribution by a Muslim to clarify and analyze in depth the ideals of Malcolm X on the basis of the Qur'an and Sunnah is long overdue... Kly makes an excellent comparative study of Malcolm's ideological moorings in Islam... Highly recommended to any serious radical scholar..." Jamalludien Ahmed Hamdulah

Malcolm X (El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz )
Black Nationalist Malcolm X was one of the most fiery and controversial people of the 20th century. Alex Haley , Malcolm asserted that his father may have been killed by members of the Ku Klux Klan. His mother, stricken by the death of her husband and the demands of providing for the family, was committed to a mental institution. Leaving school after the eighth grade, Malcolm made his way to New York, working for a time as a waiter at Smalls Paradise in Harlem. Malcolm began selling and using drugs, turned to burglary, and, in 1946, was sentenced to a ten-year prison term on burglary charges. While in prison Malcolm became acquainted with the Black Muslim sect, headed by Elijah Muhammad , and was quickly converted. Following his parole in 1952, he soon became an outspoken defender of Muslim doctrines, accepting the basic argument that evil was an inherent characteristic of the "white man's Christian world." Unlike Muhammad, Malcolm sought publicity, making provocative and inflammatory statements to predominantly white civic groups and college campus audiences. Branding white people "devils," he spoke bitterly of a philosophy of vengeance and "an eye for an eye." When, in 1963, he characterized the Kennedy assassination as a case of "chickens coming home to roost," he was suspended from the Black Muslim movement by Elijah Muhammad.

    Lessons For Leaders
The Martyrdom of Hajj Malik El Shabazz
    Sheikh Heesham Jaaber
(Led the funeral prayers of Hajj Malik Shabazz)
Death is the miserable fate of a humble people who accept scorn in order to remain alive.
Death chooses those who are not brave enough to choose martyrdom.
On February 21, 1965, Hajj Malik El Shabazz was killed and now stands among the ranks of all those martyrs in the cause of Islam. Much has been written and much more said, about Hajj Malik since that time, with many seeking to define the role he played in the history of the African-American's struggle for freedom. The proponents or survivors of the African diaspora explain him one way, while our pseudo (innovation oriented) intellectuals explain him another. Recently, I have come to realize that we cannot explain Hajj Malik without understanding the Islamic concept of martyrdom.
He chose martyrdom not because of imitation, but because of an enlightened mind which understood that ignorance and poverty were not the glorification of Allah and that Allah does not reveal Himself through cowards.
Hajj Malik reminded America that it was the unwillingness to understand about the total self (by encouraging the lopsided development of the human personality) that spawned the conflicts between the sacred and the secular and between the spiritual and the mundane. This, in my estimation, is the basis for the prevalent double standards, hypocrisy, racial discrimination, exploitation and imperialism.

Alhajj malik el-shabazz – Malcolm X. Twenty-five years after his death, MalcolmX, Al-hajj malik el-shabazz, still towers above the statue of liberty.
    http://www.iiie.net/Brochures/Brochure-20.html
Twenty-five years after his death, Malcolm X, Al-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, still towers above the statue of liberty. He refuses to die. Wherever injustice and oppression takes place his smiling face and uncompromising message fills the atmosphere. Yes, they killed the body but not the spirit. When he was alive, Brother Shabazz was the most feared man in America. And the most loved. The situation hasn't changed. For the deprived and the oppressed African-Americans, Brother Shabazz continues to be the hero, the inspiration that makes it possible for them to maintain their sanity and dignity in a vile society which can't stop despising them. We, as Muslims, are often angered to see Br. Shabazz identified as a Black Nationalist rather than a Muslim. While the anger is justified, we must understand that people generally emphasize the aspect of a leader's life which is in harmony with their own aspirations. While some African- Americans will continue to invoke the nationalist side of Br. Shabazz, it is for us to see that his Islamic personality is projected to the world! The Pilgrimage to Makkah When he was in Makkah, Al-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz wrote a letter to his loyal assistants in Harlem... from his heart:

Black Nationalist Malcolm X was one of the most fiery and controversial people of the 20th century. Born Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska on May 19, 1925, Malcolm was the son of a Baptist minister, who was an avid supporter of Marcus Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association. While living in Omaha, the family was often harassed — at one point the family's house was set afire. In 1929 the family moved to Lansing, Michigan. While in Michigan, Malcolm's father was killed; his body severed in two by a streetcar and his head smashed. In his autobiography, written with Alex Haley , Malcolm asserted that his father may have been killed by members of the Ku Klux Klan.
