Actor Peter Sellers was born in North London on September 8, 1925 and made his first stage appearance at the age of 2 weeks, during one of his parents' music hall shows. With show-biz coursing through his veins it didn't take long for young Sellers to get his big break. It came in the form of BBC radio and he got it by impersonating two popular BBC stars and recommending himself to a BBC producer. Sellers confessed his deception and being impressed that Sellers had put one over on him, the producer granted him a spot on the air.
Soon, the impressionists' impressionist went on to star in a new BBC radio show Crazy People, which made its debut on May 28, 1951. The show's name changed and became known as the Goon Show on June 22, 1952. The show was a zany collection of skits that was a precursor to Monty Python's Flying Circus. Sellers's characters on the show included: Major Denis Bloodnok, Bluebottle, Hercules Grytpype Thynne, William "Mate" Cobblers and Henry Crun. Co-starring with Sellers were Spike Milligan, Harry Secombe and Michael Bentine.

"LIFE IS A STATE OF MIND"
in-sight n. the ability to see and understand clearly the inner nature of things.
In 1971, Jerzy Kosinski published the novel Being There . Soon afterwards he received a telegram from its lead character, Chance the Gardener: "Available in my garden or outside of it." A telephone number followed and when Kosinski dialed it Peter Sellers answered. For years afterwards, Sellers would try to get this film made. "That's me!" he would tell people of the Chance character. He hawked the idea of a film to whomever he could find. Finally, in 1979, with the clout he had gained from the Pink Panther series, he was able to fulfill his dream. What followed was the culmination of Peter Sellers' career: a masterpiece of double-edged satire on politics and television. But Kosinki's screenplay goes deeper than that. What he and director Hal Ashby expose is a self-serving and self-deceived society. Through the innocence of the Chance character, all the schemes and manipulations of the world are laid bare for what they are: pure folly. For those who hunger for the truths in life, this is a film that will satisfy your appetite.

Those who know Peter Sellers only through his long-running stint as the bumbling Inspector Clouseau of the Pink Panther series would do well to watch for this AMC special in their TV Guides. While longtime fans may find it a too cursory gloss on the wide-ranging career of the late great comedic actor, the program should serve, at the very least, to trigger a Sellers binge at the local video shop. Newcomers will likewise want to delve deeper into the rich (if spotty) filmography of this one-of-a-kind talent.
Despite the tabloid title, The Unknown Peter Sellers is not an E! network-style exposé on Sellers's private life. Rather, the 'unknown' of the title refers to the large body of Sellers's work that has been long out of circulation, in some cases never before seen in the United States. Writer-directors John Scheinfeld and David Leaf have cleaned out the vaults and emerged with a wide range of archival footage, including rarely seen commercials and television specials dating back to the 1960's. Mixing their archeological finds with new interviews (Shirley MacLaine, Richard Lester and David Frost are among the talking heads), Scheinfeld and Leaf have produced a tantalizing, all-too-brief overview of the British funnyman's onscreen life.

Master impressionist Peter Sellers was born Richard Henry Sellers on September 8, 1925 in Southsea, Hampshire, England. His parents, Agnes (Peg) and Bill Sellers, called him Peter in memory of his stillborn older brother. Sellers' parents were vaudeville entertainers, and at two days old, Sellers was carried onto the stage at King's Theatre. He spent his childhood traveling the vaudeville circuit, where he gained a fondness for entertaining and a desire to succeed beyond the realm of vaudeville.
As a youth, Sellers attended Miss Whitney's School of Dancing in Southsea and Madame Vacani's Dancing Classes in London before enrolling in St Aloysius' Boarding and Day School for Boys. In the early 1940s, Sellers played the drums with touring jazz bands and also learned to play the banjo and ukulele. Just after his 18th birthday, Sellers was drafted into the British Royal Air Force. He became an official RAF concert entertainer, and between 1943 and 1946, Sellers spent his free time performing comedy sketches and playing the drums for the other servicemen.
After returning home from the war, Sellers pursued a position with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). By 1948 he had taken part in a few moderately successful auditions, none of which had resulted in an invitation to join the BBC. Having grown impatient for stardom, Sellers chose to take matters into his own hands. The comic made a telephone call to Roy Speer, producer of the BBC radio program, "Show Time." Sellers posed as a popular radio star and recommended himself to Speer. The producer, impressed with Sellers' "acting," gave him a spot on the air. Following his initial appearances on "Show Time," Sellers became a sought-after radio personality.

THE PARTY
United Artists, 1968, 99 mins. 35mm print source: MGM/UA/Swank Motion Pictures.
Produced and directed by Blake Edwards. Written by Edwards, Tom Waldman, and Frank Waldman. Photographed by Lucien Ballard. Edited by Ralph Winters. Original music by Henry Mancini. Production design by Fernando Carrere.
With Peter Sellers (as Hrundi V. Bakshi), Claudine Longet (Michele Monet), Marge Champion (Rosalind Dunphy), Steve Franken (Levinson), Fay MacKenzie (Alice Clutterbuck), J. Edward McKinley (Fred Clutterbuck), Sharron Kimberly (Princess Helena), Denny Miller (Wyoming Bill Kelso), and Gavin MacLeod (C.S. Divot).
Program notes from "Blake Edwards" by Myron Meisel in American Directors (McGraw-Hill, 1983):
The Party recognizes that slapstick, in its meticulous requirements, requires great elegance of intellect, even as it appeals to the nether sources of laughter. He does greater honor to the techniques of silent comedy by refusing to compromise his own thematic concerns to fit the outlines of an exercise, instead appropriating the structure and style to fashion yet another meditation on the difficult preservations of personal values in a comically capricious society.
Sellers plays Indian actor Hrundi K. Bakshi, imported to Hollywood for the role of a Gunga Din-like character. In his innocently overzealous way, Bakshi destroys the production to the consternation of the unsympathetically drawn director. Roger Greenspun has called the precredit sequence "the funniest slapstick scene since

Review Summary Peter Sellers is a master at playing multiple roles (just see “Dr. Strangelove”) and in “After the Fox,” he is on target once again. In Cairo, a robbery of millions of dollars worth of gold bullion has been committed and the police are baffled: they have no idea where it is!
This is a case for The Fox, or Aldo Venucci (Peter Sellers), international genius and criminal par excellence! Sellers devises a plan to get the gold by posing as a film director, making a movie in a small seaside village in Italy (where he plans to import all this gold). Sellers commands the movie with his impersonations, quick wit, and sleight of hand tricks. Victor Mature plays an aging, egotistical actor for Sellers' “film,” and Britt Ekland is the “romantic” interest as Gina Romantica, Sellers' sister. Shot on location in Italy, the film
moves at tremendous pace, with music by Burt Bacharach. It is directed by Vittorio de Sica and written by Neil Simon.

40. Sellers, Peter
sellers, peter. British Comedian/Actor. This story resonated with peter sellers at first reading and he pursued Kosinski for seven years for the film rights.
http://www.museum.tv/archives/etv/S/htmlS/sellerspete/sellerspete.htm
SELLERS, PETER British Comedian/Actor While the late actor Peter Sellers is primarily known for his roles in film comedies such as the Pink Panther series, he first became a British celebrity as a member of the cast of The Goon Show , a satirical BBC radio series. Originally aired in 1951, the show teamed Sellers with fellow comedians Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe. The show was a shocking departure for listeners accustomed to urbane humor from the BBCthe Goons combined a zany blend of odd characters in sketches that poked fun at every aspect of English society. Sellers used mimicry skills honed as a stand-up comedian in London strip-tease bars to create a number of distinctive characters with equally memorable names: Grytpype Thynne, Bluebottle, Willum Cobblers, and Major Bloodnok. The show acquired a cult following with BBC audiences around the world, and helped launch Sellers' film career. Goon Show influences can be traced to equally-eccentric British television progeny such as Monty Python's Flying Circus and The Benny Hill Show . The Goons, led by Sellers, created a distinctive media genre that combined Kafkaesque humor with hilariously stereotypical English characters. This new genre paved the way for the Pythons and others to follow in the 1960s and 1970s.
