Fabrizio Formenti, 5 Maggio 2003 di Ridley Scott E' dai tempi dei celeberrimi " Alien " e "Blade Runner", due pellicole non molto distanti dalla perfezione filmica, che Ridley Scott si porta appresso la nomea di "Regista che pone colpevolmente lo stile al di sopra di tutte le altre componenti cinematografiche", o ancora di "Autore disposto a sacrificare volentieri i contenuti sull'altare dell'effetto scenico". Sfortunatamente per i suoi molti detrattori, il cineasta inglese ha più volte dimostrato di saper coniugare brillantemente la forma con la sostanza, e di essere in grado di assoggettare la tecnica alle necessità e alle esigenze del singolo progetto. E' innegabile che Scott sia un cultore dell'estetica cinematografica; predisposizione, questa, che talvolta lo porta ad eccedere nei suoi esercizi di stile e al tempo stesso a badare meno ad un'esposizione adeguata dei contenuti (" Black Hawk Down "). Questo però non può sminuire le sue grandi qualità di regista a 360 gradi, capace di colpire l'occhio dello spettatore come pochi altri al mondo e di stupire con mirabolanti soluzioni visive figlie di una vasta esperienza anche come direttore della fotografia, scenografo (sua prima occupazione alla BBC) e montatore.

Lecter is now at large in Italy, gloriously at liberty in an unguarded world. But Clarice has never forgotten her encounters with the mannered yet nefarious doctor – his voice still haunts her for “at least thirty seconds of every day”. Mason Verger (an unrecognizable Gary Oldman) remembers Dr. Lecter too. Verger was his sixth victim, and, though hideously disfigured, he has survived. The solitary heir to his family’s fortune, he uses the resources of his inheritance to exact his revenge. Verger realizes that in order to draw Lecter out into the open, he must dangle irresistible bait: Starling, who is currently suffering the wrath of a malicious FBI agent Paul Krendler (Ray Liotta) and the media following a botched drug raid led by Clarice that opens the picture.

Fabrizio Formenti, 27 Settembre 2003 Il genio della truffa di Ridley Scott Breve vacanza dai colossal per Ridley Scott, che si lascia momentaneamente alle spalle i tanto amati set multimilionari per dilettarsi con la commedia, genere per lui pressochè inedito, nonostante egli usi definire il suo "Thelma & Louise" come appartenente a quella stessa categoria cinematografica. "Il genio della truffa", in realtà, si rivela come una commedia, per così dire, "anomala", perché gli elementi tipici del genere vengono furbescamente orchestrati in maniera funzionale all'intreccio per costruire e supportare efficacemente l'alquanto inattesa piega 'drammatica' che la pellicola prende in prossimità della conclusione; una svolta che, proprio per come viene 'alimentata', arriva ad avere il giusto peso per sorprendere effettivamente lo spettatore. plot-twist Ripensiamo ai dettagli, alle parole dette dai protagonisti, a determinati atteggiamenti degli stessi, e ci accorgiamo che la sceneggiatura, per come viene rappresentata sullo schermo, fornisce piccoli segnali che possono consentire allo spettatore lungimirante di dubitare, in certi frangenti, dei fatti a cui assiste. Verrebbe quasi spontaneo attendersi un 'contro-twist' nella scena ambientata "Un anno dopo", ma la scelta degli autori di chiudere con una sorta di riflessione fra l'amaro e l'ironico sul mondo delle truffe è molto apprezzabile, ed è stato giusto, in chiusura, restituire al film quell'atmosfera rilassata che lo aveva caratterizzato all'inizio.

Until Gladiator restored my love for Ridley Scott, he probably wouldn't have shown up on these pages. Alien and Blade Runner are two of my favorite films ever. But those were both made 20 years ago, almost my entire life. Since then he's made a lot of mediocre movies. None of them all that bad, but none were really that good either. "All they'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us wanted, where have I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got?" Los Angeles 2019, a mish-mash of cultures, a bleak look at the future. Blade Runner (1982), is easily my favorite film of Ridley's and it is always on my top-ten all time list. A renowned sci-fi classic, one of the most influential films of the genre. Beautifully photographed, great f/x (models and matte paintings look better than much of the CG stuff today), well acted, incredible art direction, and on and on. These are only the technical aspects of the film, what really makes Blade Runner great is the ideas behind it. What makes us human? Why are the replicants any less human than us? They have thoughts, feelings, dreams and goals. They are not evil, they only come back to Earth with the hope that they can somehow lengthen their short life spans. Deckard is forced into hunting them down. When he kills them it's heart-breaking, they are completely innocent. They are so convincingly human that Deckard falls in love with Rachel who he knows to be a replicant. We are even left with the thought that Deckard may be a replicant himself.
