Hijo de padres sicilianos que se dedicaban a la confección de ropa, fue criado en el "ghetto italiano" de Manhattan. Allí Martin se educó en un contexto católico, llegando a estudiar para monaguillo. A principio de los ´60 se matriculó en el programa de cine de la Universidad de New York, con compañeros como Brian De Palma. Comenzó a realizar cortometrajes. Tal vez la admiración por films de la "nouvelle vague" lo hicieron realizar trabajos representativos con escasos recursos. En 1968 realiza su primer largometraje "Who´s knocking my door" donde daba cuenta de la influencia de la cultura italiana en su vida. Con Roger Corman como productor, comienza en 1972 una serie de películas entre las que se destaca "Boxcar Bertha", film de estilo violento sobre los sindicatos. Con "Calles Salvajes" en 1973 con Robert DeNiro y Harvey Keitel como protagonistas, logra su primer éxito en New York. Pero sería con "Alicia no vive aquí" el lanzamiento en su carrera cinematográfica. Condición que se confirmaría en 1976 con "Taxi Driver" una película única con Robert DeNiro en el papel de un psicopata en una ciudad de mafiosos. Quizás su película mas representativa sea "Toro Salvaje" de 1980, la biografía del boxeador Jack LaMotta, en la que se luce la dupla DeNiro-Pesci, mismos actores que trabajarían con Scorsese en "Buenos Muchachos" en 1990.
