A Brief History of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia William Penn's "holy experiment" of religious toleration (1682) in his colony of Pennsylvania was a refuge for persecuted Catholics as well as other religions. There were Catholics in the Philadelphia area from the beginning of its colonization. The Mass was celebrated publicly as early as 1707. Old Saint Joseph’s Church, the first Catholic church in Philadelphia was built in 1733. The Catholic population increased from forty people at that time to about eight thousand by 1790. On April 8, 1808, Michael Egan, O.F.M. (d. 1814), was appointed the bishop of the new diocese of Philadelphia, which at that time included the entire states of Pennsylvania and Delaware, and the western and southern parts of New Jersey. At this time, the diocese included about 30,000Catholics attended by eleven priests. Old Saint Mary’s Church was selected as the cathedral. Trustee problems at Old Saint Mary’s persisted during Egan’s entire tenure as bishop. After Egan’s death in 1814, it was five years before Henry Conwell (1748-1842), Vicar General of Armagh, Ireland, was appointed the Bishop of Philadelphia. In an attempt to compromise, Bishop Conwell signed a pact with the trustees giving them the right to veto his appointment of their pastors. This pact was rejected by Pope Leo XII in 1827. Francis Patrick Kenrick (1747-1863) was eventually appointed in 1830 the coadjutor to Bishop Conwell with the right of succession. Kenrick was consecrated on June 6, 1830. The trustee problem at Old Saint Mary’s continued until Kenrick closed the church and the cemetery on April 16, 1831, after which the trustees capitulated to episcopal authority.

My greatgrand parents, Martin ryan and Bridget RUSSELL were marriedat saint john’s Catholic Church, Sandford on 25 May, 1873.
http://www.ballaratgenealogy.org.au/sandford/ryan_martin.htm
My great-grand parents, Martin RYAN and Bridget RUSSELL were married at Saint John’s Catholic Church, Sandford on 25 May, 1873. They resided at Bahgallah circa 1873-1891, and I think I have just found record of four of their children (Daniel Sylvester Ryan, Martin James Ryan [my grand-father], Michael David Ryan and Annie Loretto Ryan) having attended Bahgallah State School on Peter Arnett’s web site – what a find! The family then moved circa 1891 to the Wool Wool and Nalangil districts, near Colac. However, their first child, Catherine Ryan, is buried (1876) in Old Casterton Cemetery, and their second, Patrick James Ryan is buried (1877) in New Casterton Cemetery. Daniel Ryan returned to Casterton in 1910 to marry Easter Jane O’Connell at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, before returning to the Stony Rises, near Pirron Yallock, to live. I am trying hard to ascertain if any of the other Ryans in Bahgallah, such as Thomas Ryan (a co-founder of the Bahgallah State School), were related to Martin and Bridget Ryan (nee Russell). Their children attended the school at around the same time. I am hoping too to soon visit Bahgallah and see where Martin and Bridget lived, and the school (if it is still there). I have land records showing where they lived, but for some reason they seemed to have moved around Bahgallah a bit, or at least the land they tenanted moved (!) - mainly land near the Glenelg River at the ends of McIntyres Road, Casterton-Dartmoor Road and Widdecombe Road. I also look forward to visiting Sandford and the church where they were married.

The NHL ruled that Ryan Bast was not under contract to Calgary since he was never drafted and had no NHL clause in his contract, May 22, 1998. On March 19, 2003 I planned a "contact the dead" party with Amanda, John, and Ryan. This was our first time using the antique 1920's Ouija board.
We used the board for about one hour and thirty-three minutes, and during that time we talked with several spirits. I left my digital recorder on while we were using the board, so I have the exact questions we asked. Here are the answers we received:
Beth: Is anyone in the room with us?
Board: Yes
Ryan: Who are you?
Board: Harold ( Harold is my great uncle's name...he just died in September, 2002
Beth: Is it OK for us to talk to you?
Board: Yes
Ryan: Is there anything you want to tell us Harold? Board: Yes Beth: What do you want to tell us? Board: Rest Ryan: Are you resting where you are? Board: No Ryan: Why aren't you resting? Board: Farm Beth: Are you worried about the house? Board: Yes Ryan: Why didn't you talk to anyone when you were alive? Board: Dale ( Dale is my grandfather, Harold's brother

Frances Schervier
Frances Schervier, born January 8, 1819, was the daughter of John Henry Schervier, a wealthy and respected needle manufacturer and vice-mayor of Aachen. Her French mother, Marie Louise Migeon, reared her children sternly. After the death of her mother and two elder sisters, at thirteen Frances assumed care of the family household. Although Frances' life was one of privilege she developed an acute awareness of the desperate condition of the poor while still quite young, selling silver and other articles in the house through a trusted seamstress and giving the proceeds to the poor along with money set aside for her dowry. In a dispute over the rights of the church in 1837 ( ), the Prussian government imprisoned the Archbishop of Cologne, Clement August von Droste-Vischering, causing a great public reaction; the repercussion was a revival of religious spirit, especially in Westphalia and the Rhine country. In the wake of this spirtual awakening some prominent Aachen ladies started a society for the relief of the poor and petitioned John Schervier to permit Frances to join. He at first agreed but later demurred when Frances began nurse the sick in their homes, fearing that Frances would spread disease into his own house. Rather than respond vigorously to her father's objection, Frances discreetly continued to visit the sick until he gradually became accustomed to her involvement; her father later recalled that his daughter grasped how to emancipate herself.
