Roy Rogers
Riders into the Sunset
by: Bo Jaworski Roy Rogers was one of the most indestructible heroes that American
society has ever embraced. It is no wonder that millions adore
"The King of the Cowboys!" In the 1940s and 50s, Rogers' image was everywhere on lunch
boxes, comic books, cereal boxes, toy pistols, clothing... the list goes
on and on. Roy Rogers made over 80 films and had a successful TV show on the
main network in the 1950s which was in syndication through the 1960s. Born Leonard Slye in Ohio in 1912, the son of a shoemaker, Rogers
grew up "dirt poor," but in a close-knit family. When he moved to
California, he helped form the........................................................... Wildest Westerns is published by Wildest Westerns Publishing

Roy Rogers The July 6 death of Roy Rogers at age 86 surely didn't register much for post-Star Wars people, most of whom simply can't relate to westerns. He was "the King of the Cowboys" said the obits, whatever that meant. The only things that the under-45 crowd might know about Roy are his Marriot-owned Roy Rogers Family Restaurant chains (there are 600 hundred of these), and that he's that crazy coot who had his horse, Trigger, stuffed for tourists to see on his ranch. But in his heyday, the 1940s, Roy Rogers, an ex-trucker and migrant worker, was one mighty movie star. His under-an-hour cowpoke programmers, made astonishingly fast and cheap at tiny Republic Pictures, played everywhere across America, especially in small towns and rural areas. The movies were shot usually in six days and, in some years, Roy starred in eight pictures. Think about it: practically every month you got a brand new Roy Rogers movie (there are about 100 in all), and you got to guffaw at the antics of Roy's sidekick (usually that fuzzy-faced, toothless old geezer, George "Gabby" Hayes). You got a live-and-kicking Trigger, a lovely horse, and, from 1944 on, you got some romance between Roy and Dale Evans. Roy and Dale made 26 movies together. They were married for 51 years. They were avid, clean-living Christians, and, in the 1950s, they adopted orphaned Korean children. Those who met Rogers found him invariably modest and courteous, just the way he was in the movies. There's no "noir" underside to the cinema of Roy Rogers: he's the guileless cowboy under the white hat. His enemies have mustaches, greasy hair, hang out in the backrooms of saloons in sleazy suits. They always try to doublecross Roy, make him the fall guy for one of their crimes. Roy outfoxes them. Often without gunfire or fisticuffs, Roy corrals them and has them arrested. Roy wins the day.

Pardon me, Roy
Wicked picker kicks off the blues fest
By FISH GRIWKOWSKY
Edmonton Sun First of all, it's Roy Rogers with the hot chops, not the one wearing tight chaps. The fuzzy bluesman with the gangster hat, not all shaved in a cowboy Stetson.
You know, the musician who produced John Lee Hooker's The Healer. The one with wicked licks, not rodeo tricks. So, uh, pull Trigger back into the barn.
Now that we're on the same centre spread, Mr. Rogers takes the phone, on his way out of the neighbourhood. As usual, the man is on the road, in pursuit of a master's degree in blues education for all of us, dropping in tonight to play at Hawrelak Park as the fourth annual blues fest gets under way. Right off, he answers the obvious: why do Slideways, an album of instrumental slide guitar numbers? R.R.?
"I found it very liberating not to sing, not worrying about lyrics or vocal quality. To tell you the truth, I'm not the world's greatest singer. I had the idea brewing for some time, I just had to make sure I had the strongest trio possible," he says, as the scenery rushes by outside his window from California to Nevada.
Rogers ended up with more than a trio. On the backbone of himself, bass player Steve Evans and Phil Aaberg on keys, he invited a number of high-profile session players, including his previous collaborator Norton Buffalo, whom he hadn't played with in a decade. (The two have a new record out, Roots of our Nature, and, as an aside, Rogers co-wrote the new Bonnie Raitt.) The result is a very slick, sensual record. It begs for nothing, needing no singer.

Roy Rogers Cybercast Transcript
The folks at Virgin Records were kind enough to forward us this transcipt of Roy Rogers' May 16th Cybercast on AOL . Enjoy! OnlineHost: Your host for tonight is AOLiveMC2(HeatherAMP) Welcome to AOLive, Roy Rogers! Roylive: Thank you! This is a first for me and it is great to be participating in something new like this. Are you ready to answer some questions? Roylive: Ready and willing! Question: What bands or artists do you enjoy listening to today? Roylive: I listen to all kinds of music from blues to country to Jazz. But most of the music I listen to is classic jazz and blues recordings. One of the new artists I particularly like is Alannis Morisette. Question: So when are you coming back to Spokane, WA? Roylive: Probably not until September or October. Question: Do you like cool jazz? Roylive: Very much. Love Chet Baker, almost anything by Miles Davis, and more. Comment: Roy forgive my ignorance, but what is a slide guitar? Roylive: Slide guitar is a specific way of playing guitar by use of a metal or glass cylinder on either your third or fourth finger. Usually in conjunction with finger picking or regular picking. The guitar is usually tuned to an open chord, i.e., E, D, G, or A. This is Delta Style, Delta being from Mississippi Delta. One of the greatest musicians was Robert Johnson who influenced many musicians after him such as Muddy Waters and Elmore James all the way down to the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton. Comment:
