Drunk Stephen Arden (Ralph Bellamy) goes to see Dr. Tony Flagg (Fred Astaire), says he wants to marry Amanda and asks him to see her. Tony says that females are mindless and need spanking, and Amanda Cooper (Ginger Rogers) hears the record. She sits in his chair, and Tony explains psychoanalysis. Amanda says that she doesn't dream and doesn't want psychoanalysis. Amanda watches Tony practice golf and miss the ball. Tony dances and golfs better but sees that she is gone. Tony joins Amanda on a bike ride and learns she heard the record. She admits she is maladjusted, and he rides into a bush. Tony dances with Amanda and tells her what to eat so that she will dream. Amanda dreams she is in a garden with Tony, who sings "I Used to Be Colorblind" and dances with her in slow motion. Her Aunt Cora (Luella Gear) dreamed of a man too. Stephen tells Tony that he is marrying Amanda tomorrow; but Tony says he loves Amanda and must remove the suggestions. Stephen prosecutes Tony before Judge Travers, who orders Tony to stay away from Amanda. Tony dances with Cora and sings "Change Partners" to Amanda. Connors (Jack Carson) calls Stephen on the phone so that Tony can hypnotize Amanda, but Stephen stops it. At the wedding Cora warns Tony and Connors. Stephen tries to hit Tony but knocks out Amanda, enabling Tony to give her suggestions. In the final scene Amanda with a black eye weds Tony. This musical comedy uses techniques of psychoanalysis to confuse a budding romance of a patient for her doctor, a phenomenon Freud called transference.

27. Bright Lights Film Journal | Flying Down To Rio
The film that put Fred Astaire and ginger rogers together on a dance floor for the first time.
http://www.brightlightsfilm.com/26/flying.html
"Hey fella, twirl that
old propella"

BY ALAN VANNEMAN Hollywood producer Merriam Cooper loved three things: airplanes, the tropics, and giant gorillas. In Flying Down to Rio Flying Down to Rio Fred and Ginger buffs are generally lukewarm toward Flying Down to Rio , because the dancing isn’t all that great, and because Fred and Ginger aren’t really Fred and Ginger — that is, they don’t play the roles they play in "classic" Fred and Ginger films like The Gay Divorcee and Top Hat And, in fact, Flying Down to Rio Most of the fun in Flying Down to Rio and glamour boy Gene Raymond. Del Río plays a Brazilian beauty (not much of a stretch; she was Mexican and gorgeous), while Raymond is a bandleader/pilot whose father owns "the sunny side of Wall Street." (Fred is Gene’s accordion-playing sidekick.) Flying Down to Rio worth watching. The action starts in the Hotel Hibiscus in Miami, as majordomos and super sissies Eric Blore and Franklin Pangborn inspect the staff. Pangborn’s in for some more rude shocks when he confronts the hotel band, catching particular grief from Ginger, as nail-filing singer "‘Honey’ Hale." "Good morning, Popeye," she says, at his approach. "How dare you speak to me when I have not asked you a question?" he demands. Later, when he warns the band "not to get familiar with the guests," Ginger hikes her skirt to inspect a comely knee and asks, "But what if the guests get familiar with us?"

    Fred Astaire
Biography Filmography Awards Articles ... FUNNY FACE A lot of adjectives come to mind when one mentions Fred Astaire: debonair, poised, elegant, captivating. And nouns too, especially grace, sophistication and talent. He wasn't particularly handsome, nor did he have a singing voice comparable to so many of the romantic crooners of his day. But Astaire didn't need those standbys he could dance like no one else. His films with Ginger Rogers transformed the movie musical forever, and in them he proved that he wasn't just a dancer he was a talented light comedian too. Astaire also had a way of singing songs as if he were carrying on a conversation making every word of every lyric matter. Composers like Gershwin, Berlin and Porter were inspired to write their best for him, because they knew his delivery would bring their tunes to life. Often imitated, but ne'er to be duplicated, Fred Astaire was one of a kind.
    Fred and Ginger
Fred Astaire came to Hollywood in the early 1930s to begin a new stage of his life-long career as an entertainer motion pictures. After a brief debut in DANCING LADY (1933) with Joan Crawford RKO paired Astaire with one of their established second-lead comediennes
