Ginger Rogers
The late Ginger Rogers is a true legend in her own time. Making her performing debut at age 14 she went on to Vaudeville and then to Broadway. She arrived in Hollywood in 1931. Her first film, playing opposite Claudette Colbert as a 16 year old flapper, made her a star. The 1930's musicals including Top Hat and Swing Time with dance partner Fred Astaire remain classics of elegance and style. Miss Rogers subsequently expanded her range, earning the Best Actress Oscar for her dramatic performance in Kitty Foyle . She starred in a variety of dramas and comedies making regular film appearances through the late 1950's. She returned to the spotlight in 1965 with the lead role in the hit Broadway musical Hello Dolly . Later she took Mame to London for a successful 14 month engagement and a command performance for the Queen. She recently directed an updated version of Rogers and Hart's musical comedy Babes in Arms Since the early 40's, when she purchased land on the Rogue River in Oregon, she had been interested in dairy farming. She made her home in Oregon where she had built a modern dairy complex and breeds Guernsey milk stock. Miss Rogers was an accomplished artist and exceled at both sculpting and painting. She enjoyed tennis, golf, swimming and skeet shooting and held several tennis cups and some high-card records at skeet.

    "Movie Magazine International" Tribute
    (Air Date: Week Of 4/26/95)
    By Monica Sullivan
    At her very best, Ginger Rogers made singing and dancing and acting seem like the easiest things in the world to do. With or without Fred Astaire by her side, she always appeared self-possessed, funny & engaging. It took work to create the illusion, of course, and even more to sustain it over her long career. But Rogers - & mother Lela - were used to that from the early days when she used to enter and win Texas Charleston contests. Together, Lela and Ginger were a formidable team for over 63 years, with Lela disarming the competition backstage and on the set and Ginger trouncing them soundly onstage & onscreen. In her first feature film, released 65 years ago this month, Ginger was Puff Randolph who demanded "Cigarette me, Big Boy. Well, do it!" After seeing Paramount's "Young Man Of Manhattan", young women all over the country started saying the same thing to their boyfriends. Paramount didn't exactly do right by Ginger: I dare anyone to see 1930's "Follow The Leader" all the way through, but she fared better at R.K.O. studios where she starred, off and on, for over 25 years. When Ginger sang "We're In The Money" over at Warner Bros. In "Golddiggers of 1933", she perfectly captured the mood of a depression weary world. Earlier that year at the same studio, Ginger Rogers, who could sing and dance rings around the planet, talks Warner Baxter into casting Ruby Keeler of all people as the star of "42nd Street"! But by Christmas of 1933, Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire were firmly planted in the international consciousness as the real stars of "Flying Down To Rio". Neatly upstaging top-billed Dolores Del Rio and Gene Raymond.

    Biography Filmography Awards Articles ... Image Credits It's easy just to write off Ginger Rogers as Fred Astaire 's most famous dance partner; that is, until you've seen some of her other films. Ginger is one of those actresses who has pleasantly surprised me as I've gotten to know her work better. She was a first-rate comedienne and even the highest-paid actress in Hollywood for a time. While her dramatic films aren't as well known as her comedies and musicals, the more serious acting abilities they display are still noteworthy and even won her a Best Actress Oscar in 1940. Yes, she could sing and dance, but that was just the beginning. Although she made a score of films on her own before Fred Astaire ever came to Hollywood, it was during the course of their ten musicals together (starting with FLYING DOWN TO RIO (1933)) that Ginger's movie career really took off. At left is a publicity still from their first starring musical together, THE GAY DIVORCEE (1934). TOP HAT (1935) was Ginger and Fred 's fourth picture together and a huge box-office success. It broke records at Radio City Music Hall, was the second biggest money-maker of the year behind MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, and even earned an Academy Award nomination in the Best Picture category. DANCING IN THE NIGHT
    Dancing by the sparkling fire;
    Underneath the watchful moon;
    Sharing light with every scene;
    Contemplating love's desire.
    Dancing in the golden light;
    Moving slowly; turning near; Silent glances from the heart; Silent songs of love we hear. Seldom finding joy we need, 'Til we find love that cares; Seldom understanding dreams, Until we find love that shares. Still, though nature cannot speak With the words that we desire; Often we may hope and seek For the dreams it may inspire. Underneath the watchful moon, The dance continues by the fire: Underneath the golden moon; Forever seeking dreams desired.

    Welcome to my celebrity fan page. This is dedicated to black and white movies. In all of the ten movies of Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire, Carefree
    is my favourate. The story revolves with Amanda Cooper (Ginger) who "can't make up her mind" whether she'll marry Steve, her fiance'. She has often postponed her wedding that her fiance' sends his best friend Tony Flagg (Fred), a pshchoanalyst, to treat her. Unfortunately Amanda falls in love with Tony but Tony doesn't loves her back until she
    finally decided to marry Steve.
    Fred and Ginger's Biography: Months ago Entertainment magazine had an issue about the top 100 entertainers of the century. It bothered me that Fred and Ginger didn't make the list. As far as I could tell Fred and Ginger were better than Elvis Priestly and Marilyn Monroe. It is right that their films were just "bread-and butter epics designed to compete for the same nickels that were supporting Rin Tin Tin, Shirley Temple, The Three Stooges, and Gene Autry" + but they were good together, and sure millions of people loved them during their time. They were the best dancing partner ever and probably the entertainment industry will never have another astounding movie team like them again.
    Fred Astaire was known as a very gentleman, shy but a perfectionist and therefore there was temperament. He was born Frederick Austerlitz on May 10, 1899, in Omaha, Nebraska. In 1933 he married Phyllis Potter. They had two children: Fred Jr. was born on 1936, and Ava was born on 1942. In 1954 his wife died at age of 46. Her death was very painful for him
