Joe : "Dude. That was a little harsh." Lisa : "Oh what. So now you want a piece of me, is that it?" Joe : "No…not at all." Lisa : "Good." Joe : [to Beth] "I always knew she’d ask me that question some day. I just didn’t think it’d be in that tone." ("Chock" [4-11])
"Your last name’s Garelli?"
Joe Rogan possessed the second most physical acting style of the cast, and I found his expressive hand movements always a delight to watch. In the early days of the show it was too easy for myopic television journalist-critics to overlook the strength of Rogan’s acting. One writer even called him a "Tony Danza wannabe," a misjudgment that, to his credit, the writer amended in a later article. Once you realize how fantastic Rogan’s timing was or how fully realized was his character Joe Garelli do you come to appreciate his skills as a comedic actor. Joe was the balancing force of the cast. He could be well adjusted to counterbalance the antics of Matthew or Bill (and he was often paired in scenes with Matthew). However, when needed he could play up his more insane side through his insistence on fixing everything himself or a statement affirming his belief in UFOs that bordered on paranoia. Furthermore, as another illustration of the fact that comedy relies on creating absurdity, rich comedy was mined by playing off Joe’s masculinity. Sometimes it was comedy based on Joe’s machismo taken to the point of absurdity. Examples include the lines he used on Catherine in "Massage Chair" [3-3]. After working on Catherine’s desk, the following conversation takes place.

Biography
Joe Rogan didn’t set out to be a comedian. Nor, for that matter, did he set out to be an actor. He really didn’t set out to be anything. But a series of circumstances have conspired to make him one of the hottest standups working today.
How did this accidental comedian and performer, a veteran of five seasons on NBC’s Newsradio, wind up with a fast-growing following and a groundbreaking debut comedy album, I’m Gonna Be Dead Someday on Warner Bros. Records? The short answer: Tae Kwon Do.
“I was always a really bad kid,” Rogan recounts. “in and out of trouble until I was 13 or 14. Until I started doing martial arts, I had always thought of myself as a nice guy trapped in the body of a violent criminal. It was this discipline and focus of Tae Kwon Do, claims the Newark-born and Boston-raised Rogan, that enabled him to take his life back.
Within two years, Rogan had earned a black belt and went on to become the Massachusetts Full Contact Tae Kwon Do champion four consecutive times. At the age of 19, he won the US Open Tae Kwon Do Championships and, as the lightweight champ, went on beat both the middle and heavy weight title holders to take home the Grand Championship.

Wilber "Bullet Joe" Rogan Born: July 28, 1889 Died: March 4, 1967 Teams: K.C. All Nations, Kansas City Monarchs Position(s): Pitcher, Outfield Hall Of Fame: Notes: Professional baseball was Bullet Rogan's second career. As a young man he had intended to make military service his life's work, and in 1911 he began a decade long stint in the U.S. Army. During this period both his interest in baseball and his skills on the diamond steadily grew as he organized and played on camp baseball teams while stationed in the Phillipines, Hawaii and Arizona. Leaving his military career behind Rogan joined Wilkinson's Kansas City Monarchs in 1920, the inaugural season of the Negro National League. From the onset of his baseball career it appeared that there was nothing that he could not do, and do well. His blazing fastball and widely varied arsenal of breaking pitches quickly made him the ace of the Monarchs' staff. His quick bat and power made him an invaluable hitter in the lineup„so much so that he remained in the lineup as an outfielder when he wasnÍt on the mound. And, what's more, he was durable. Only seldomly did he miss a pitching assignment, and only seldomly did he leave the game until the last man was out. During the first Negro League World Series in 1924 Rogan posted three complete games and made a relief appearance in yet another game.

Evidently, Sherdog is Not a Factor for Joe Rogan
June 28, 2002
By Mike Sloan Most things in life are better late than never, and with the case of this interview I had with Joe Rogan at UFC 36's weigh-in, I'm just thankful that I'm able to type it up. Shortly after the 36th installment of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, this tape was lost during a move somewhere deep within the haunting depths of a cardboard box filled with various items. After angrily searching for the tape to no avail, I thought for sure that I'd never be able to post this interview anywhere, let alone get another one with Joe Rogan, the host of the hit TV show on NBC, Fear Factor . Joe is an amazingly busy dude and thanks to our mutual friend, Dana White, I was able to pin him down before he emceed the UFC X-Box tournament and weigh-in. Here is what the funnier-than-hell Rogan had to say: Mike Sloan : Hey Joe, you used to be a part of the UFC. You were the guy who used to interview the fighters before and after the fights. Why did you stop doing that? Joe Rogan : Well, I didn't really have the time. It was too hectic between News Radio and my touring stand-up (comedy act). I was always travelling, doing stand-up and then flying into Devil's Asshole, Alabama doing the old UFCs. It was just too hard, but I was still a fan. I followed it very closely.

By Mike Sloan Mike Sloan : Do you have any personal favorite fighters? Joe Rogan Mike Sloan : Are you a big boxing fan, too? Joe Rogan : I'm a huge boxing fan. Absolutely. Roy Jones is my favorite boxer without a doubt. I think he's probably one of the greatest fighters of all time. Everybody always says that Roy Jones hasn't fought anybody that's any good, but I disagree. I think he fought a lot of good guys. They just look stupid when they fight him. He's from the planet Roy. He's from another level. Mike Sloan : It sucks because he's stuck in a time when there's relatively nobody great in his division. Joe Rogan : I know. Mike Sloan : What irritates me is when these 'experts' say that Bob Foster would have whipped his ass, Archie Moore would knock him out, etc. Joe Rogan : No, I don't buy that at all. It's bullshit. Let me tell you something, dude; if he ever fought Hagler, he would treat Hagler like a bitch. All those guys. Sugar Ray Leonard, all those guys would get cracked. Mike Sloan : Well, he definitely wouldn't knock out Hagler, that's for sure.

Wilbert Rogan The birth of Wilber Rogan in 1889 is celebrated on this date. He was an African-American baseball player.
Rogan was born in Oklahoma City and moved with his family in 1908 to Kansas City, Kansas, where he attended Sumner High School. He played on several semi-pro teams in the Midwest, as well as in the Army. In 1917, on a tip from Casey Stengel, manager of the New York Yankees, J. L. Wilkinson hired Rogan to pitch for the All Nations, a mixed-race team. A few years later, at the age of 30, Rogan moved to the Kansas City Monarchs, of the newly chartered Negro National League. Rogan was a star player for the Monarchs for eleven seasons.
He led the team in home runs and stolen bases three times, while twice, as a pitcher, lead the league in victories. In 1926, Rogan became the team's manager, a position he held off and on through the 1936 season. Wilber "Bullet Joe" Rogan was one of the best and most versatile players in the history of the Negro Baseball Leagues. Known mainly for his fastball, Rogan had an assortment of effective pitches that made him very effective in the 1920s. He was also an outstanding fielder and a powerful hitter.
He retired from the Monarchs in 1938 and worked an umpire for the Negro American League until 1946, when he went to work for the post office. Bullet Rogan died in Kansas City in 1964. He was inducted posthumously into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, in 1998.

Negro Leagues Star as Pitcher, Outfielder Bullet Joe Rogan spent the first 10 years of his career pitching and playing for teams in the Philippines, Hawaii and Arizona while he was in the Army. It wasn't until he was 30 that, the player who had been discovered by Casey Stengel, made his debut with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues in 1920. He led the league in wins in 1924 and 1925. Some records show that he compiled an 111-43 mark in 11 seasons in the Negro Leagues. Rogan is described as having a blazing fastball (the Bullet nickname) a forkball, palmball, spitball and curves that he threw from a delivery with no windup. He had one of his best seasons in 1924 when he was 35 years old. Rogan was 15-5 as a pitcher and he hit .411. When he wasn't pitching, Rogan was playing in the outfield. In two seasons, he led the team in home runs and he regularly hit above .300. Rogan was a star of the Negro League's first World Series in 1924. He appeared in 4 games against Hilldale, earning 2 victories, pitching a complete-game loss and making a 4th appearance to pitch in relief. In his career, he was 8-4 in postseason play.

    April 2004
March 2004 February 2004 ... December 2002 Friday, 28 May Idle Hands Hello hello from No-Work-Land! I took a couple days off work because (a) a five-day vacation on Memorial Day weekend sounded just luscious, and (b) the IT staff is busy all weekend doing something incomprehensible like defrumulating the servers, or upgrading our bangsisters, or something. Anyway, the upshot is that all of our computer services are totally and completely hosed until Tuesday. I did have the option of going to work anywaywith NO COMPUTERS AT ALL, meaning no netsurfing or solitaire or even actual workwhich would have meant doing really entertaining things like updating manual registration forms, or proofreading SOPs, or gloomily beating off in the restroom. No thanks. All of those things are exactly as boring as they sound, except for the beating off in the bathroom, which is really depressing as well as being boring. So I just bailed and took some time off. I've already entertained myself by calling the bosslady and torturing her about what a good time I've been having. "What are you doing, Bosslady?" "I'm training Caftan Guy on forms development. What are you doing?" "I'm drinking a cognac and watching a baseball game. HA!" I could hear the Bosslady slump. "You bastard," she breathed. "I'm stuck here with Caftan Guy, and you're lounging around being a louche. I'm miserable." I felt badly for her. "Why?" I said. "He loves learning forms development! He's nothing like youhe's interested in learning his job! I can't stand it. He's ecstatic." She sounded like a broken woman, and I took pity. "Go tell him to go jerk off in the bathroom. It's incredibly depressing. He'll come back looking like a whipped dog."

He was consequently forced to take gigs at bachelor parties, working without a mic, as an M.C. at a strip joint and in ghetto dives where, for a change, his honest delivery was appreciated.
