Working on the Frontier ~ Mapping Curtis' Accomplishments In the 30 years it took to complete the North American Indian Project, Curtis visited almost 100 Indian tribes in the western third of the United States and Alaska. Although he fell short of his ideal of visiting all of the North American tribeswhich may have numbered in the thousandshis was nonetheless an awesome accomplishment. In an era when domestic travel involved risk and uncertainty, he managed, through careful planning and tenacity, to cover 64,000 kilometers [40,000 miles] of western terrain by rail, by waterway, by foot, and by any other means he could find. - Some of the Indian Groups visited by Edward S.
