This section of Silver Creek contains the best whitewater and most play spots. For it's first 2 miles, from the putin on theTaylor Fork tributary to its intersection with KY 876, Silver Creek is class I-II at all flow levels. The best whitewater fun of this reach however doesn't really begin until it's last mile where Silver Creek runs parallel and can be seen from KY 876 - the "Park N' Surf" section. Park N Surf putin rapid (6" flow level) At normal flows of 0" to 2 feet there are several outstanding, easily run class II(III) rapids within the Park N Surf stretch which offer the play oriented paddler hours of fun. At higher flows above 2 feet Silver Creek along Park N Surf approaches solid class IV range with at least one hydraulic, (third rapid downstream of the Park N' Surf putin), a riverwide, very sticky hole that must be punched slightly left of center to avoid a thumping. Silver Creek Falls, a 4 foot creek wide ledge which can bee seen from the KY 876 bridge can be run pretty much anywhere with a sneak tongue forming far left at flows above 2 feet. The Park N Surf section has about 9 rapids / play waves along its mile length to just below the KY 876 bridge and can be run in 15 minutes or several hours depending upon the individual paddler's outlook on play boating and whitewater skool of thought.

Ecological Processes in the Riparian Zone
Key topics of discussion in this presentation and in discussions on the 'riverbank' will be: Direct influence of riparian vegetation on ecosystem processes and stream health
  • Riparian influences over the composition and production of aquatic plants.
  • The relative importance of shade vs nutrients.
  • Stream temperature regimes - aquatic biodiversity and ecological processes.
  • Relative importance of riparian versus aquatic sources of food.
  • Restoring riparian zones to control nuisance aquatic plants and moderate stream temperature regimes. Role of large woody debris
  • Debris dams and their role in nutrient flux.
  • Large woody debris as aquatic habitat. Riparian zones as habitat for aquatic and semi-aquatic organisms
  • Requirements of terrestrial phases of the life cycle of aquatic organisms.
  • Fragmentation of riparian habitat as a barrier to restoration.
  • Contribution of aquatic production into terrestrial food webs.

    94. "Miramichi - Great Rivers - Angler's OnLine"
According to curtis, in his book, Fishing the Miramichi, the word Miramichi is aMontagnais (a native people of Many great rivers are fully of the wilderness.
    http://www.flyanglersonline.com/features/greatrivers/miramichi/
"The world's greatest Atlantic salmon river," writes Wayne Curtis of the Miramichi River in Currents in the Stream. A sweeping statement, perhaps suspect by having been made by a native son. The evidence however supports the superlative. No other river sees as many angler days, produced as many Atlantic salon, or offers such a length of fishable water.
According to Curtis, in his book, Fishing the Miramichi, the word Miramichi is a Montagnais (a native people of Quebec province) word for "Micmac land". The Micmacs (local aboriginal people) called the river Lust-a-gooch-cheech or Little Restigouch (another famous New Brunswick salmon river). Why the Montagnais word stuck, except perhaps that it was easier to pronounce and write, is a mystery. [See map click here
Many great rivers are fully of the wilderness. Not so the Miramichi. Much of its lower valley has been inhabited for three centuries. The valley's people are as important to the river's story as the great silver fish which brought it angling fame.
The Miramichi is actually a river system located in New Brunswick, one of Canada's east coast provinces. To be precise, which almost no one ever is, the Miramichi only exists for a few miles after its two main components, the Main Southwest Miramichi and the Northwest Miramichi, join near Miramichi City (formerly the towns of Newcastle and Chatham). From there the river flows to a rendezvous with Miramichi Bay and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. At it's mouth it is nearly a mile wide. The first European to comprehend the full extent of the system was the young French engineer/cartographer, Batiste Louis Franquelin, who mapped the country in 1686. Regardless, most people speak of the Main Southwest as if it were the Miramichi and treat the Northwest as one of its tributaries, so I will follow this convention.

THE NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN Skidmore's Holdings of Curtis

In the 1943-44 fiscal year, a special appropriation from the Skidmore College Board of Trustees to the Book Fund allowed the library to purchase Edward Curtis' The North American Indian (1907-30), an epic work comprised of twenty volumes of illustrated text and twenty portfolios of large-size photogravures. The work takes up almost five feet of shelf space. The far-sighted decision to purchase Curtis's work was made during a time of hardship for the library due to the Second World War and is why Skidmore today owns one of the extremely limited editions of this beautiful and haunting work.
