Just as when we come into the world, when we die we are afraid of the unknown. But the fear is something from within us that has nothing to do with reality. Dying is just like being born - just a change.- Isabel Allende, The House of the Spirits Relax and let yourself dream! One day you will arouse from your slumber and you will invade this world of true art and spirit wich will cast you into the wistfulness. Art, through all its expresions, whether we are talking about painting, sculpture, writing, poetry, literature, architecture, photography, cinema, theatre, dance, music, literature, romance, design... is the only one that can enliven the reality. It is an elevating situation that those who embellish life are continuously challenging our immagination and our souls with their endless masterpieces. Environment
Curtis Creek is a second order stream located in western St. Joseph County. This top-quality designated trout stream flows south to Mill Creek, which feeds the St. Joseph River watershed of Lake Michigan. The town of Three Rivers is located about 4 miles to the southwest of Curtis Creek.
Most of Curtis Creek flows through nearly level to gently rolling, well-drained, loamy and sandy soils on outwash plains and moraines (Oshtemo-Spinks Association). The area surrounding the stream is primarily wooded, wetland, or abandoned farm field.
Estimated to be 3.3 miles long, Curtis Creek's west branch starts in low wetland areas dominated by springs. The east branch is an old designated drain (Profile Lake Drain) in the upper portion near M-60, but has hardly any water flowing through it. Curtis Creek falls about 50 feet from its headwater spring area to the confluence with Mill Creek. Stream gradient is about 15.2 feet per mile. It averages 14.5 feet in width, with an average depth of 1 foot. Stream discharge has never been measured, but is estimated at 10-15 cubic feet per second.

A district court judge in Seattle prohibited the dredging, slated to begin on December 15, because the Corps had failed to resolve major legal, scientific and environmental issues surrounding the project. Idaho Rivers United was among seven conservation and fishing groups that sued the Corps to block the project. "We're excited about this ruling because it gives the Corps a chance to find a better way to deal with the buildup of sediment behind Lower Granite Dam," said Bert Bowler of Idaho Rivers United. "The Corps Environmental Impact Statement on this project was severely flawed."

Greetings, everyone - Thanks for all the messages. Like "5," I too am having fun with this, but I'm a bit pressed for time, so I'm sorry I'm not responding to each of you individually or in full. Dear 5: Thank you for your comments. "Get out the liniment" - great line! I also like your quote: "First there is a teacher, then there is no teacher. First there is a system, then there is no system." I think the original Buddhist saying was, "Before I studied the Way, mountains were mountains, and rivers were rivers. After I'd practiced the Way for a few years, suddenly mountains were no longer mountains, and rivers no longer rivers. But now that I've practiced the Way for many, many years, mountains are again mountains, and rivers are rivers." So I guess we eventually will return someday to "there is a teacher, there is a system." Dear Charles: I understand you were cutting to the chase, no harm done. I didn't think I was trying to be indirect before ;) Excellent way to describe the controlled conditions: "necessary but not sufficient." My bio wasn't meant to impress, just to show that I have some background.

A professional stuntman has broken the world record for bungee jumping from a hot-air balloon. Curtis Rivers, 32, lept from a balloon 49,869 feet (15,200 metres) above Andalucia, Spain, while attached to an elastic rope. After bouncing several times he cut himself free and parachuted back to earth. Mr Rivers, from Guisborough, Teesside, is awaiting official verification of the feat which was performed and recorded on Sunday. Mr Rivers is no stranger to risks
He performed the feat while preparing for a world-record parachute jump. His operations manager Jim Crosbie, 41, said: "It was fantastic... he is fine. "We were doing some high altitude testing of the equipment, and while we were there we decided to do the bungee jump as well as test the cameras and oxygen. "That height was the lower limit of where you can jump without oxygen.

Bush Administration Poised to Strip Federal Protections from Pacific Salmon Stocks Hatcheries are no substitute for good habitat. If we are to recover wild salmon, we must restore river habitat. Photo: Manu Esteve. April 29, 2004 A Bush administration policy would count hatchery fish when it decides whether wild salmon are entitled to Endangered Species Act protection. Ultimately, this policy threatens more than wild salmon. Reducing protections for wild salmon means that protections for river habitat will be reduced. And when habitat protections are reduced, clean water is threatened, as are all of the economic and social benefits healthy rivers provide. Additional contacts below Portland, OR  Today, a federal court rejected as illegal a federal agency plan to protect vanishing wild salmon and steelhead from the harmful effects of hydroelectric dams on the Columbia and Snake Rivers.  The court ruled that the plan fell well short of meeting the requirements of the Endangered Species Act. S almon  advocates have been pointing to the plan's inadequacies since it was released in December of 2000.  "This decision creates a great opportunity," said Mark Van Putten, president of the National Wildlife Federation. "By rejecting the administration's salmon plan because it lacks scientific credibility, the door is open to fashioning a plan based on sound science that will save salmon and help build a sound economic future for all the region's people - farm, rural, Tribal and urban. We hope this administration will take an honest look at what's really needed to restore wild salmon in the Snake and Columbia  River basin and invest in the future economic opportunities that a restored river resource could offer."

DAM TIME Free the water but respect the past Going With The Flow by Wayne Curtis Photographs by Chris Hartlove Historic Dams are Being demolished or vastly altered to allow fish to return to their historic spawning grounds. Is there another way? W ILL FOSHAG SLIDES OPEN A WINDOW AND PEERS OUT from the second floor of Heishman's Mill, a stone red clapboard gristmill built by a family of Swiss Mennonites west of Carlisle, Pa. The Conodoguinet Creek, is a tributary of the Susquehanna River, is about 150 feet wide where it flows both around and beneath the mill, and hypnotically smooth sheets of water roar over a six-foot dam, churning up a white spume that folds back upon itself. On the this day of spring, the curiously sweet of manure on adjacent fields wafts past on the season's initial balmy breezes. It is just the sort of day the first fish return each year. Usually trash fish like suckers, they make it only as far as this dam, their passage upstream blocked. "Sometimes," Foshag says, "the water's so thick with them it almost looks black." But not today. After scanning the river for a minute or two, Foshag steps back and closes the window. "Maybe the water needs to warm up a few degrees," he says.

THE HISTORY OF CURTIS TOWNSHIP
BY
CATHERINE CLARY NOTE: Catherine Clary wote the following article as a school assignment during the period when the Alcona Dam was under construction, between 1914 and 1924. Added notes to provide clarification have been enclosed in [ ] brackets. Ebenezer Curtis was the first white man to settle in Curtis Township. Mr. Curtis came here from Maine, May 1867 with his family consisting of three daughters and one son. The son died in later years. Mr. Curtis was of English descent. He was a strong able bodied man able to stand the hardships of pioneer life. He would often walk to Tawas, which is about thirty miles from here, where he would get supplies. He first got his mail from Tawas, later from Potts, what we now call McKinley, then from South Branch. In 1900 a post office was established in Curtisville, by Joseph Bell. Mr. Curtis' first neighbor was John Calegrove who lived near McKinley. He came here in September of the same year, also from Maine. Marvin Wilber lived near the creek which now bears his name, Richard Cage lived on what we now call the Tanner Farm, owned by the heirs of Louise M. Gates. Caleb Smith lived two miles south of Mr. Curtis on the creek which bears his name.

Movie Reviews

Freaky Friday (PG)
Directed by Mark S. Waters
Freaky Friday culminates in a scene at the House of Blues that features both Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis, left) and daughter Anna (Lindsay Lohan, right) jamming on guitar. She may have had a body to die for but time and gravity affect us all (worse luck) and Jamie Lee Curtis is no exception, (and good for her declaring she plans to age disgracefully!) Okay, she may not be as 'perky' as she once was but at least we can now concentrate on her other assets, like her knock out acting ability and great comedic timing. Want proof? Check her out in this latest hilarious film adaption of Mary Rodgers' book Freaky Friday. It's a great concept. A mother and teenage daughter constantly at odds with each other, (and who hasn't been there!) magically switch bodies and after a lot of laughs and near disasters finally discover a newfound understanding and respect for each other. She wants to audition with her garage band but her mum wants her to attend the wedding rehearsal dinner... and Anna doesn't even like Ryan. What's a girl to do? Fight back, that's what!
