Professor Ritter's current research is in three broad areas: Particle Impact Damage. Before structural ceramics can be used reliably, their response to particle impacts must be understood. Impacted by either sharp or blunt particles, ceramics invariably exhibit surface cracking around the impact site that leads to strength degradation. Their research is concerned with characterizing this particle impact damage as a function of the particle's properties (size, shape, and velocity) and the properties of the ceramic (toughness, hardness, and elastic modulus). John starred in "J for J" for 3 weeks from 20 October as the mentally disabled John Sullivan, son of American actor, Barry Sullivan whose letters to his first-born inspired his daughter to write a stage play about her family's life. Jenny Sullivan starred as herself and Jeff Kober as father Barry. John's performance evoked the following rave review:
"The remarkable John Ritter embodies John so completely that anyone who deals regularly with the disabled would recognize him as one of their clients. Never out of character, Ritter is at turns innocent, irritating, joyful and impatient, with all of the qualities radiating from an essentially amiable personality. Ritter is perfectly on the mark in the key performance."
Rita Moran, Correspondent, Ventura County Star. John has commented on the play: "Having known Barry and met John (Sullivan) a couple of times, I said "yes" before I read it. I identify with it. My father is famous too; I have a brother who is handicapped. We are the younger sister and younger brother who are helping to take care of an older brother, and in that way you take on the role of the older sibling, the protector." I MET JOHN RITTER for the first time two-and-a-half years ago when he and Henry Winkler were ending their hit run on Broadway in "The Dinner Party." The rest of the cast, the great Len Cariou, Penny Fuller, Jan Maxwell, and Veanne Cox were staying with it, and Neil Simon offered Jon Lovitz and me the chance to step in for Henry and John, which, as you may imagine, took almost three tenths of a second to accept. Lovitz and I went to see it as soon as we got to New York and went up to the dressing rooms afterwards to introduce ourselves. I was taking over John's part, so I went to his room first. The door was open, and I stuck my head in. He was unlacing his shoes, and when he looked up his face shined like the sun, and he shouted, "Hey, Larry, come on in! Great to meet you!" Before I could move, he stood up and came over and pumped my hand with a big smile. Then, suddenly, his face dropped, his eyes grew wide, and he whispered with fear, "You . . . You want me out of the room?" And I laughed, and he laughed, and we were off to the races, and I remember thinking, "I really, really like this guy." And I really did, I liked him an awful lot, but I wasn't alone. Everyone liked John Ritter, everyone who ever met him, from toll collectors to studio heads. Everyone. I
