For this past week I have been diligently working to decode a massive spreadsheet containing experimental data sampled from around the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest. While I had significant trouble opening it, because it was created in Quattro Pro, I was able to translate into MS Excel format. The zipped datasheet can be downloaded here
Once I was able to open the file, I began translating and interpreting the data it contains. This spreadsheet was created by Gustavo Negreiros of the University of Washington using data obtained from RADAMBRASIL (I'm not sure if this is the correct link - it's in Portugese), EMBRAPA/FAO, etc. Below is an overview of the table and column structure:

Three Cornell students win Rhodes and Marshall scholarships
By Larry Bernard, Simeon Moss and Blaine P. Friedlander Jr. Three Cornell students, in different fields of study, are among a select few American recipients of the prestigious Rhodes and Marshall scholarships announced Dec. 8. Two of the students won both the Rhodes and the Marshall scholarships and, having a choice of only one, picked the Rhodes. They are: Jonathan Levine, majoring in physics, and Jessika Trancik, majoring in materials science and engineering. The third student, Rafael Cox, a College Scholar with an emphasis in history, won the Marshall Scholarship. They are all seniors. The three 1997 Marshall Scholarships for Cornell is the second highest number at a university in the United States this year. Only Harvard University, with seven, had more. And for the first time in Cornell's history, the university has more than one Rhodes Scholar in a year. Cornell, with two Rhodes Scholarships, had the third highest number, behind Harvard's five and Georgetown University's three. Yale University and the University of Notre Dame also had two each. There were 32 Rhodes Scholars selected in the United States this year out of 990 applicants from 323 colleges and universities, and between 30 and 40 Marshall Scholarships. "I congratulate Jessika, Jonathan and Rafael, who exemplify the quality of the student body at Cornell," President Hunter Rawlings said. "These awards are not only a confirmation of their academic excellence, but also are an outgrowth of this university's continued emphasis on undergraduate education and its integration with research. These honors, and the recent Nobel prize awarded to two Cornell professors and a former graduate student in physics, are a testament to the collaborative efforts of students and faculty at Cornell."

HOME NEXT STORY "Tree, bug, flower, another bug..." When I think about some of the stuff I encountered on the Ghost section of the Wolf River, snakes, horseflies, deerflies, and lots and lots of mud, I find myself wondering why I consider that Sunday such an incredible experience. I wasn't very eager to leave the comfort of my warm bed early that morning, but at the same time I was looking forward to spending some time away from the rest of society. I had never been on a canoe trip like this, but I had been on a few hikes before and knew a little bit of the soothing quality nature can have on city folk who let it affect them. I was looking forward to "getting away," but I didn't think that meant driving in the same direction for what seemed like hours. In our case, it did. As we drove, the houses became fewer and fewer, and the forest denser and denser; I realized that what I was about to experience wouldn't be the "urbanized nature" of state parks that I was used to. The Wolf River turned out to be a very impressive display of "true" nature. Though not completely untouched by civilization, the river provided the opportunity to discover and explore a thriving yet delicate ecosystem. So many plants have been picked and trampled, and animals killed or captured in parks that we aren't given the chance to see how they live and survive together on their own; such was not the case on the Wolf.

    ROBERT RHODES FAMILY
    Bertie Co., NC

Rev. Dr. Doug Showalter, 54 Main St., Falmouth, MA 02540 dougshow@cape.com Updated 22 Sept 1999
ROBERT RHODES [d: abt 1808, Bertie Co.] was the father of EPHRAIM RHODES, who likely was the father of ROBERT WILEY RHODES in Trigg Co., KY. I would like to determine the parents of Robert. To help in that venture, here is a time line of information, presumably about this same Robert Rhodes in early Bertie Co.: TIME LINE ==1759 [17 Jan] Robert Rhodes purchased 470 acres of land in Bertie Co. from DANIEL MURPHY [Deed Book I, p. 347].
"Daniel Murphree of Bertie County conveys to Robert Roads of Bertie County in consideration of 15 pounds Proclamation money, 470 acres joining Connantsit [Connaritsa] Swamp. Wit:  Nathan (X) Miers, HENRY ROADS, Nathaniel Cooper.  Proved in July Ct. 1759."
Note: Daniel Murphree likely was from Nansemond Co., VA.  His wife was Sarah [Dempsey?]. He appears 1743 in Bertie Co., moved to Orange Co. by 1765, and died in Chatham Co. [the section cut from Orange Co.] by 1771 when his 1769 will was proved. ==1761 Robert Rhodes purchased land in Bertie Co. from THOMAS PEIRCE [Deed Book K, p. 62].

    Biography - Jonathan Kozol
Jonathan Kozol was born in Boston in 1936 into a traditional middle-class Jewish family. Kozol's father worked as a neurologist and psychiatrist, and his mother was a social worker. Kozol attended Harvard and later Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, and then lived in Paris in poor neighborhoods for several years while he worked on a novel. A defining moment in Kozol's life occurred in 1964 when, shortly after returning to Boston to pursue an academic career, he heard about three young civil-rights workers who had been murdered by the Ku Klux Klan. He had never been political or had any involvement in race issues, but he was greatly affected by the news. Soon after hearing of this event he began working as a teacher in a freedom school that had been set up in a black church in a low-income, predominantly black area in Roxbury, just south of Boston. Kozol has made a practice of leaving comfortable surroundings for more challenging, impoverished areas. He enjoyed teaching young children, and eventually got a job in the public school system in Roxbury teaching fourth grade. The segregated public school in Roxbury was very different from the school Kozol had attended as a child growing up in the wealthy Boston suburb of Newton. Shortly after he began teaching in the public school system, Kozol was fired for reading from a book of poetry by Langston Hughes that was not on the approved curriculum list. Soon after, he wrote his first work of nonfiction, Death at an Early Age: The Destruction of the Hearts and Minds of Negro Children in the Boston Public Schools, based on his teaching experiences in Roxbury. The book won the National Book Award in 1968.
