Banks is Russell F. Stark University Professor and Director of the Center for Multicultural Education at the University of Washington, Seattle. He is a past President of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS). Professor Banks is a member of the Board of Children, Youth, and Families of the National Research Council of the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences. He is also a member of the National Academy of Education. Professor Banks has written or edited 15 books in multicultural education and in social studies education. His books include Teaching Strategies for Ethnic Studies, 6th Edition; Cultural Diversity and Education: Foundations, Curriculum and Teaching, 4th Edition; Teaching Strategies for the Social Studies, 5th Edition, and (With Cherry A. Edward Pawlick March 17, 2004 Many family leaders are saying that the popular President of Concerned Women for America, Sandy Rios, who stepped down last week, was removed by James Dobson of Focus on the Family, because of her opposition to the federal marriage amendment he is promoting which allows civil unions. Dobson is putting this language in the federal amendment to the consternation of all the other family groups in the country. Therefore, the case is now under control of the Superior Court. A judge from the Superior Court must make a ruling in May as to what will happen next. Of course, Justice Marshall could change her ruling if three judges in the SJC will agree with her to do so. If Margaret Marshall and her three cronies are removed, that will mean the three dissenters will be in charge at the SJC until Gov. Romney appoints four new ones. Detainees were met by two lines of baton-wielding guards forming a human gauntlet, and received a punishing beating before entering the facility. At least one detaineedied at the facility on January 11, 2000, when an earlier head wound was aggravated during the intake beating. Detainees were beaten both during interrogation and during nighttime sessions when guards utterly ran amok. During interrogation, detainees were forced to crawl on the ground and were beaten so severely that some sustained broken ribs and injuries to their kidneys, liver, testicles, and feet. Some were also tortured with electric shocks.
