I will post again when I get a date set. However, the more I have studied the issue and read from the "KJV Onlyites," the more I am convinced that King James -Only ism has very little if anything to do with the King James Bible The fact is, the more " militant advocates of King James -Only ism are veritable HERETICS when measured by the teachings of the King James Bible, the views held by its Translators, and the views of Bible doctrine set forth by the Confessions of Faith of Baptist and the Protestant Denominations. A new software program available on the Internet shows the usefulness and flexibility of shareware
by James Fallows

T HE wave of software standardization led by Microsoft products like Windows and Word has made computers simpler to use than they once were. It is easier now than it was a decade ago to sit down at any machine, anywhere, and have an idea of how to make it go. But it is harder for a software developer to introduce a genuinely new approach to word processing, data management, or any other established function. And it is much harder for a company even to keep a program on the market if another product, especially one from Microsoft, seems likely to become the standard in that field. Discuss this article in the forum of
Of course, I may be biased, since so many of the programs I consider most valuable have been driven from the market through this all-or-nothing form of competition. I still use several of these programs Symantec's GrandView for making outlines, Lotus's Magellan for handling files, Lotus's Agenda for organizing certain kinds of research data even though they have not been sold for years and, as holdovers from the DOS era, are increasingly awkward to run on current operating systems like Windows 95 and Windows NT. My bleak consolation is knowing that people who have used and loved the Apple Macintosh have more to complain about than I do, as the steady pressure toward Windows-based standardization has come to threaten the very existence of the Macintosh and its innovative programs.

James Lee Burke
Dave Weich
, Powells.com One of only two authors to win two Edgar Awards James Lee Burke has been called "the Faulkner of crime fiction." Now, many readers are saying that Purple Cane Road , the eleventh installment of his long-running series about Louisiana cop Dave Robicheaux, is Burke's best book yet. When a pimp tells Robicheaux that his mother spent her last days whoring in New Orleans and was drowned by cops working for the mob, Dave admits, "My mother's memory, the sad respect I always had for her, had been stolen from me." The pimp is soon murdered, but Robicheaux's search for the truth about his mother's violent end has only just begun. Burke's career has seen its ups and downs. First published at age nineteen, by the time he was thirty-four he had four novels under his belt. But then, suddenly, publishers wanted nothing to do with him - yet, the novel they rejected for nine years

James Gleick Catches Up With Time
Dave Weich
, Powells.com Faster: The Acceleration of Just About Everything opens at the Directorate of Time, a compound so oddly reminiscent of old science fiction novels you could be forgiven for thinking the author is only trying to illustrate a point: that our society has become obsessed with time. In fact, the Directorate is real - on a hillside in Washington D.C., dozens of atomic clocks networked with others around the globe keep our planet's "official" time. "A compression of time characterizes the life of the century now closing,"

Vorsprung durch thinktank May 26, 2004 bottoms up Apparently Jane Jacobs likes the internet . Phew! As the annointed spokesperson for the emergent generation, imagine if the old dear thought it was a load of old cack. [There is] a very persuasive argument that the computer, in the form of things like the World Wide Web and the Internet, is actually [giving] people firsthand experience with use of a Web and making virtual changes in a Web-like way. This is not real. But after all, quirks and quarks and atoms are not real, for all we know. But thinking of them, picturing them and seeing the world with these things, really illuminates our understanding. It may be untruthful and it may be wrong, but usually, each of these things gets a little nearer the truth. So this Web-thinking in the place of the mechanical, cause/effect kind of thinking is certainly closer to the truth.. The Housing Bubble

Warning: The Dollar Is On the Precipice

Inflation Is Rising
... Printer-friendly version The Housing Bubble The following news crossed the business wire this morning: May 26 (Bloomberg) U.S. sales of new houses fell 11.8 percent in April, the biggest monthly drop in more than a decade, as mortgage rates rose and prices soared to a record. This is obviously bad news, but the picture is even worse than it appears at first blush. Recently I happened to be reading a report by Dr. Marc Faber, editor of . It was an excellent report, with a lot of useful information, but I was particularly struck by the following chart (which Marc said was prepared Bridgewater Associates, so thanks go to them as well). This chart shows that homebuilders are carrying a record-high inventory of unsold homes, which obviously has potentially adverse consequences for the US economy. As Marc cogently notes: "In some areas of the US, housing prices have been rising at almost 30% per annum in recent years and overall prices have doubled since 1997. The question, therefore, arises when this housing boom, which was fueled by ultra low interest rates and allowed people to refinance their homes, will come to an end. This is an important question because US consumption since year 2000 was not driven by capital spending and employment gains, but purely by asset inflation in the housing market, which allowed people to take out larger and larger mortgages and spend the additional funds (well understood, "borrowed funds") on consumer durables such as cars and consumer non-durables."

I ask again...
As I've grown accustomed to watching US television news I've found myself repeatedly asking what it is that feels so alien. The preponderance of celebrity news on the Today Show , and the avalanche of advertising is certainly a part of it, but the more I've watched, the more I've focussed in on one thing: interviewing. My favourite television interviewers in the UK tend to be people like John Snow, who are sharp enough to respond quickly if an answer doesn't make sense, irreverent enough to press anyone they come up against, and fond enough of playing devil's advocate that they're not worried about appearing partisan. The contrast really hit me this week when I saw Katie Couric interviewing Colin Powell. It was a nice interview, and Colin comfortably and confidently made his points, drawn out by his host. Which would have been all well and good, had his answers satisfied the questions. With the gravity of the current situation in Iraq becoming clearer by the day, this is not a time for the media to allow any politician to get away with vague or inconsistent statements. Lest I appear partisan (heavens forbid!) I felt the same way when a few minutes later Matt Lauer interviewed Wesley Clark. He was perhaps a little more forceful, but the interview was far from penetrating.
