23. LILEKS (James) The Bleat
When I was a kid I was terrified of the End of the World. Kids heard things; older kids whod read that ridiculous endtimes tract, The Late Great Planet Earth said it
http://www.lileks.com/bleats/archive/03/0903/091103.html
When I was a kid
It was 1968. On the night before the last day of camp, a counselor named Charlie Brown interrupted our sunset meeting by the shores of White Bear Lake to tell us the news: Russia had launched their missiles and they would destroy America before the night was out. It was time to get right with God.
Back at the barracks we were quiet and unnerved. No one wanted to go to sleep. No one wanted to talk, either. Finally John Larson, the bunkhouse bully, broke the silence. He was the mean kid. He was the one who tormented me at home, and had bothered me at camp. Nelson Muntz without the charm. John Larson expressed his simple wish to stab Charlie Brown in the stomach.
A dozen little Lutheran campers nodded in the dark: ya sure, you betcha.
Two years ago today I was convinced that every presumption I had about the future was wrong. This war, I feared, would be horrible, total, and long.
But.

    Welcome to Audio Bible,
    the King James Version narrated
    by Alexander Scourby is online!
Yes, you can listen to the entire Bible on the Internet! You can also buy Audio Bible as commercial software for your Windows PC. ROMANS 10:17-18 So then faith [cometh] by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. Back In the forties Alexander Scourby recorded the very first narration of the Bible. It was produced by The American Foundation For The Blind and distributed by The American Bible Society as The Talking Bible. The Logo on the records read "God's Word for a new age". Fifty years have passed and I would like to present to you "God's Word for this new age." The oldest Book in the world is now available in multimedia. Instead of 67 wax records running at 16 2/3 Rpm speed it now fits onto one CD-ROM disk. Yes with Audio Bible you can listen to all 72 hours of audio without flipping a record or tape. You may ask yourself, why you need Audio Bible? One of my friends made the point clear to me. He asked me, "tell me of one thing your father ever wrote to you?" My mind went blank. After a few seconds he said, "now tell me things your father told you?" My mind began to fill with memories and his point was made. We remember better if we hear it and best if we read along with what we hear. This is what Audio Bible is all about. For centuries the Bible was read aloud, even when in private, remember the story of Philip and the Eunuch?

    Screenplay: Jacques Audiard, Tonino Benacquista
    Cinematography: Mathieu Vadepied
Music: Alexandre Desplat U.S. Distributor: Magnolia In French with subtitles It has been nearly a year since I first saw Read My Lips , and the taste of the film still lingers. Time may leech away the specifics, but the overall impression remains. So it is with many great films. By far, the most impressive French film I saw at 2001 edition of the Toronto Film Festival was Read My Lips , the fourth feature from director Jacques Audiard. Although the movie contains elements of a romantic thriller, it is equally powerful as a drama. The two main characters are effectively developed and fully realized. In fact, it's the protagonists - in particular, the interaction between them - that drives this motion picture forward and keeps us involved. However, unlike in many character studies, the plot is more than just a simple framework. It is complex and unpredictable, and, as a result, provides the perfect means to better get to know the characters and understand the shifting nature of their relationship. Carla (Emmanuelle Devos) is a hearing-impaired 35-year old woman who works as a secretary in a property development company. Her life is ruled by routine - she never goes out and is always available to babysit for her friends. She longs to move forward both in her career and in her personal life, but, encumbered by her hearing deficiency, she is unsure how to do so. One day, when her bosses decide she needs an assistant, she takes on an unskilled but charismatic 25-year old man, Paul (Vincent Cassel). Paul is an ex-con, fresh out of jail, with no place to live. Carla is immediately attracted to Paul, and he recognizes this, and decides to manipulate the attraction for his own purposes. In return for helping her with her career goals, Paul persuades Carla to use her lip-reading abilities to aid him in casing out an apartment he intends to rob.

His father worked for fifty years at a glass factory, and his mother left school at fourteen to work in a laundry; neither attended school beyond the eighth grade. While in high school in 1943 Wright suffered a nervous breakdown and missed a year of school. When he graduated in 1946, a year late, he joined the army and was stationed in Japan during the American occupation. He then attended Kenyon College on the G.I. Bill, and studied under John Crowe Ransom . He graduated cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1952, then married another Martins Ferry native, Liberty Kardules. The two traveled to Austria, where, on a Fulbright Fellowship, Wright studied the works of Theodor Storm and Georg Trakl at the University of Vienna. He returned to the U.S. and earned master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Washington, studying with Theodore Roethke and Stanley Kunitz . He went on to teach at The University of Minnesota, Macalester College, and New York City's Hunter College.

HOME ART EDUCATION GREAT ARTISTS IN HISTORY - JAMES McNEILL WHISTLER James McNeill Whistler (1834 - 1903) 'As music is the poetry of sound, so is painting the poetry of sight . . .' IMPORTANT DATES James Abbot McNeill Whistler was born in America, yet he spent much of his life abroad. Early years were spent in Russia and then in London, only moving back to America with his family out of necessity when his father died of cholera. While a child in Russia, Whistler had attended drawing classes, but it wasn't until 1855 after dropping out of West Point Military Academy that he embarked on an artistic career. He moved back to Europe from America, settling in Paris. This was the beginning of a lifetime commitment to art. He quickly made his presence felt due to his flamboyant, eccentric ways. He would go about Paris wearing a straw hat, a white suit, highly polished black patent leather shoes and a monocle. While in France Gustave Courbet, the Realist painter, was an early influence on his art. He then moved to London in 1859 where he discovered, and made etchings of, what was to be one of his favourite subjects, the River Thames. In London he met Joanna Heffernan, a captivating red-head. She modelled for him and was his companion for the following seven years. Joanna is seen in the controversial

    Dear visitor,
Welcome to my domain website. I hope you'll stick around for a while. By way of introducing myself it may suffice to say I'm a Poet. As a shy and retiring adolescent, I started writing poems; tedious unoriginal stuff about how depressing everything was, how nobody loved me and all the usual teenage angst. But then it was the eighties and except from some fine new wave music, all there was to talk about was unemployment, racism and nuclear holocaust; the three mandatory topics of any social sciences discussion.
Lateron, I first sent a poem to a magazine called 'First Time', run by Josephine Austin. She encouraged me to keep on with the poetry writing and even invited me to perform at the Hastings Poetry Festival. At that time, having had only one poem published, I thought better of it. But in due time more and more publications followed, both in print and on-line magazines. The first time I was ever paid for a poem was when 'Famous Reporter', a poetry magazine from Tasmania sent me two International Reply Coupons for services rendered. Not exactly Harry Potter money but it was nice none-the-less. In 1997, a haiku I'd written was runner-up in 'Still' Magazine's annual Haiku Award.
Around that time I was still living in Holland and also scribbling away in Dutch. A semi-moving poem was put on display in the Gouda Resistance Museum as part of a exhibition of remembrance about World War II. A nocturnal lyrical poem was read on Dutch national radio during an all night broadcast featuring music and literature with an after hours theme.

    WWII Memorial Dedication Wrap-Up
DC Remarks by the President at National World War II Memorial Dedication The years of World War II were a hard, heroic and gallant time in the life of our country. When it mattered most, an entire generation of Americans showed the finest qualities of our nation and of humanity. On this day, in their honor, we will raise the American flag over a monument that will stand as long as America itself. In the history books, the Second World War can appear as a series of crises and conflicts, following an inevitable course from Pearl Harbor to the coast of Normandy to the deck of the Missouri. Yet, on the day the war began, and on many hard days that followed, the outcome was far from certain. There was a time in the years before the war, when many earnest and educated people believed that democracy was finished. Men who considered themselves learned and civilized came to believe that free institutions must give way to the severe doctrines and stern discipline of a regimented society.

By Maria Cramer Thursday, April 29, 2004

James Joyce's works are famous for frustrating high school English students.
But some of the actors who interpreted the words of the Irish author during the 21st annual James Joyce Ramble in Dedham on Sunday appreciated the writer's challenging prose. Particularly some of his bawdier passages. Dressed in early 20th-century costume, actors read from ''The Dead," ''Ulysses," and ''Finnegans Wake" during the ramble, a 10K race that combines organizer Martin Hanley's love for running, Joyce, and acting.

You can read its terms in full at the website of the james Randi Educational Foundation (JREF) the organisation administering the challenge.*.
    http://www.alternativescience.com/james-randi.htm
James Randi's "$1 million challenge" Most people have heard of the challenge by James Randi offering $1 million to anyone who can demonstrate psychic powers. On the face of it, Randi's challenge must be a good thing mustn't it? There's a million dollars just sitting there waiting to be picked up, and all anyone has to do to win it is perform under controlled conditions the kind of claim we read about every day in the newspapers spoon bending, mind-reading, remote viewing. So doesn’t the mere fact that no-one has won Randi's challenge prove that such things are impossible? As usual in the murky world of "skepticism", things are not exactly what they appear to be. Randi's $1M challenge was unveiled on 1st April 1996. You can read its terms in full at the website of the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF) the organisation administering the challenge. A quick glance through the provisions seems to show an eminently reasonable and fair challenge. But now go back and look again a little more carefully, this time with the kind of critical eye that Randi brings to exposing cheats and frauds. What you find are some ambiguities that are likely to make any serious claimant uneasy to say the least. The first such ambiguity is contained in the preamble where it says, "Since claims vary greatly in character and scope, specific rules must be formulated for each applicant."

"Amen to that," Jerry Rowland said when the last player folded. He reached forward to collect the pile of uniform accessories they used for poker chips, the plastic fatigue buttons a nickel, the brass dress buttons a quarter; rank insignia were a dollar and up depending on the rank they represented: a private a dollar, a lance corporal twelve bits, a corporal two dollars which, in that particular troop-carrying compartment, was as valuable as they could get. "I'm calling it a night," Donald Durant said, tossing in his cards, then he added, "Is it night?"
