Up: MYSTERIES OF THE MIND REVERSED. `How The Mind Works' by Stephen Pinker The Penguin Press, 1998. (Book review intended for Nature John Sloss The Mind is one of the great mysteries of our age. The problems of how meaning, consciousness, knowledge, and free will arise in physically deterministic lumps of flesh have exercised philosophers for centuries. Almost as mystifying are the riddles of how the mind extracts information about the world, and what constitutes the nature of thought. Then there are the problems of human behaviour; why do people persist in self-destructive behaviour? Why do we like art? Why do people watch films that make them cry? We make no headway because we lack the conceptual tools to frame the problems. Like the ancient Greeks looking at the stars, we do not know how to begin to make sense of them. Pinker admits that he does not know how the mind works, but claims to provide the conceptual scaffolding that renders these questions tractable. His thesis is that the puzzle of Mind has been downgraded from mysteries to mere problems . We may not know the solutions but we know where to look. This work is a remarkable achievement in exposition and breadth of application. The novice has a myriad of ideas meticulously and deftly unravelled, with clarity enhanced by analogies and anecdotes. The text is also aimed at professionals in this area, to whom it presents a global view of psychology, evolutionary biology and philosophy, in addition to its main thesis. Because of its breadth of cover, some of the controversial areas are underexplored.

format this article to print AUSTIN, STEPHEN FULLER (1793-1836). Stephen Fuller Austin, founder of Anglo-American Texas, son of Moses and Maria (Brown) Austin, qqv qv and study law. At this time Moses Austin was on his way to San Antonio to apply for a grant of land and permission to settle 300 families in Texas. qv qv rump congress, the junta instituyente , to complete a law that the emperor signed on January 3, 1823. It offered heads of families a league and a labor of land (4,605 acres) and other inducements and provided for the employment of agents, called empresarios, to promote immigration. For his services, an empresario qv qv passed a law conforming in general to the previous act approved by Iturbide. It continued the empresario system contemplated by that law and offered to each married man a league of land (4,428 acres), for which he was obligated to pay the state thirty dollars within six years. In the meantime, Austin had substantially fulfilled his contract to settle the first 300 families. Under this state law, he obtained three contracts (in 1825, 1827, and 1828) to settle a total of 900 additional families in the area of his first colony, besides a contract in partnership with his secretary, Samuel M. Williams, qv for the settlement of 800 families in western Texas. Unfortunately, this partnership contract led to a disagreeable controversy with Sterling C. Robertson.

Home Encyclopedia Summa Fathers ... B > Stephen Theodore Badin A B C D ... Z Stephen Theodore Badin Bordeaux for the American mission in November of the same year, with the Revs. B.J. Flaget and J.B. David, both destined in God's providence Father Badin returned to America in 1828. After a year on the Michigan mission, he went back to Kentucky in 1829. The next year he offered his services to Bishop Fenwick of Cincinnati, and took charge of the Pottawottomie Indians at St. Joseph's River. Miss Campau of Detroit, an expert Indian linguist, acted as interpreter and teacher, until Father Badin left the place in 1836. Having returned to Cincinnati in that year, he wrote for the "Catholic Telegraph" a series of controversial "Letters to an Episcopalian Friend". In 1837 he went to Bardstown, Ky., was appointed vicar-general, and continued to visit the various missions. In 1841 he removed to Louisville with the bishop's household. In that year he conveyed a great deal of church property (notably that of Portland, near Louisville) to the bishop, and a farm to the Very Rev. E. Sorin of Notre Dame, Indiana. On the 25th of May, 1843, Father Badin celebrated the golden jubilee of his priesthood, at Lexington, where he had offered up the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for the first time in Kentucky. In September, 1846, he accepted from Bishop Quarter of Chicago the pastorship of the French settlement at Bourbonnais Grove, Kankakee County, Illinois. In the winter of 1848 he was again in Kentucky, and Bishop-Coadjutor Spalding welcomed him to the episcopal household. About two years later he became the guest of Archbishop Purcell at Cincinnati, and eventually died at the archbishop's residence. His body lay undisturbed in the cathedral crypt for over fifty years. In 1904 Archbishop Elder permitted its removal to the University of Notre Dame, Indiana.

He was born in 1961 in Cleveland (Ohio) and became interested in acting at a fairly young age. In highschool, he participated in several plays. Later on, he and a group of friends founded the Immediate Theatre in Chicago (Illinois). This theatre indirectly helped him on his way to his later roles in tv series and movies. In 1985, he moved to New York, where he played in several Big Apple based productions. A couple of years later, he made the big step to Los Angeles and to the bigger tv and movie productions. Stephen Caffrey is well-known for this three-year role in "Tour of Duty" a tv series on the Vietnam War in which he played Lieutenant Myron Goldman. Some people may also know him from his role in the Aids drama movie "Longtime Companion". Stephen also did guest appearances in several other tv series.
