It's nice to be finally known as an authentic Mexican." Anthony Quinn Anthony Quinn was born in Chihuahua, Mexico on April 21, 1915. His surname, Quinn, comes from a paternal grandfather of Irish descent. His family moved to Los Angeles to escape poverty while he was still very young. During his childhood, he supported his family as a butcher, a street corner preacher prizefighter and an artist. At the age of eleven, he won a statewide competition for his sculpture of Abraham Lincoln. Later, he was awarded a scholarship to study architecture with Frank Lloyd Wright . The two became close friends and Frank Lloyd Wright even paid for surgery to fix a speech impediment that Quinn had. His film career started in 1936. Many of his early roles included bandits and other stereotypical villains and ethnic characters. In 1937, he married Katherine De Mille. Katherine was the adopted daughter of Cecil B. De Mille. By the late 1940s, he had finished over 50 films but still wasn't very successful. In 1947, he returned to Broadway for three years where he played Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire and other roles.

ANTHONY QUINN Actor Anthony Quinn's heyday was the 1950s, when he won two Oscars as a supporting actor: one as the brother of Emiliano Zapata in Viva Zapata! (1952), and another as the painter Gauguin, the friend of Vincent Van Gogh in Lust for Life (1956, with Kirk Douglas as Van Gogh). Quinn spent his boyhood years helping support his family by doing odd jobs such as: a butcher, boxer, street corner preacher, and a slaughterhouse worker. It was during those long hours of back-breaking work that he dreamed of becoming Napolean, Michelangelo, Shakespeare, Martin Luther, and Jack Dempsey all rolled into one. Living only five miles from Hollywood, the six-foot Quinn used to draw portraits of stars, and would then send them to the star in the hopes of making a few dollars. Anthony Quinn's next artistic venture and success came at age eleven when he won a California state-wide sculpture competition for his entry of Abraham Lincoln. A few years later, Anthony was granted a scholarship to study architecture with Frank Lloyd Wright. They developed a close personal relationship, linked by the common desire to leave their mark on society. In fact, it was Wright who paid for the young Quinn to have surgery to correct a speech impediment. It was also Wright who suggested that Quinn take acting lessons in order to help re-train his tongue. Wright recalled years later, having seen the young Quinn perform on stage, that he knew Anthony would never return to architecture again.

For residents of the unincorporated areas, please contact your Supervisor for all matters of local government. History Anthony Quinn Library was originally named Belvedere Library. Belvedere Library was established in January 1914 as a pioneer branch of the newly founded Los Angeles County Public Library. By 1925, when the library was moved to a store-front facility at 111 North Ditman Ave., the collection had grown to several thousand books. In 1937 the library was relocated to 3713 Michigan Avenue. The library remained there until 1973, when it was moved to its present location. On January 5, 1982 the library was renamed in honor of actor Anthony Quinn; his childhood home occupied the site of the present-day library. In 2000, the library underwent a major renovation funded by the First Supervisorial District. It reopened in February 2001 with a fresh look and new furnishings.
