Inside this issue: 2002-03 Bush Teaching Scholars Writing Across the Curriculum Workshop Summer Funding Developmental Leave Supplements I believe that in the long run advances in the scholarship of teaching cannot be sustained by the efforts of isolated scholars working alone or in loose networks. Institutions in which these scholars work must develop more formal structures that merge the institution's commitments to both teaching and inquiry. These institutions can then serve as platforms for the work of scholars of teaching, as sanctuaries for their efforts, and as forums for their scholarly exchanges. Lee Shulman, Opening Lines , p. 99. Meet the 2002-03 Bush Teaching Scholars Photos and Project Descriptions Next month, a new group of Bush Teaching Scholars will begin work on projects designed to explore significant questions related to teaching and learning in their disciplines. Following in the footsteps of the first cohort of Bush Teaching Scholars, whose projects we reported on last year, these ten faculty from across the university will each receive a $3000 stipend, which will enable them to take part in a two-week summer seminar, pursue a teaching project of their own design, and meet together on a monthly basis during the following academic year. This year's group includes: Gayle Baldwin (Philosophy and Religion), Jeff Carmichael (Biology), Robert Dosch (Accounting and Business Law), Kim Fink (Art), Dorothy Keyser (Music), Vikki McCleary (Physiology), Patrick O'Neill (Economics), Ken Ruit (Anatomy and Cell Biology), William Shay (Chemistry), and Dale Zacher (Communication). | |
