104. Baden-Powell: The Man
Biographical sketch of the Founder of Scouting by Steve Tobin.
http://www.netwoods.com/badenpowell/bp-man.html
Baden-Powell: The Man
Taken from:
B.-P. The Story of his life.
E. E. Reynolds
Oxford University Press, first printed in 1943.
One characteristic which was soon apparent to anyone who met him was his versatility - he could do so many different kinds of things, and do them well. This did not mean "Jack of all trades, and master of none". He was, for instance, a master of his own profession - soldiering - and particularly of all that is covered by the word "scouting". He preferred to do things for himself and to look after himself, whether at home or on the veldt or in the wilds of Kashmir. As an artist he showed remarkable skill, particularly in sketching people or animals in action. This was, of course, based on the accuracy of his powers of observation combined with his skill with pencil or brush. Another form of this ability was modeling, the elements of which he learned, as has been recorded, while he was having his portrait painted. It was typical of him that instead of using "official" tools, he improvised what he needed out of a couple of penholders. He was humanly glad when people were interested in what he was doing, for he never assumed a false shyness; but he himself was equally interested in what others did, and this was part of his charm; as you explained something to him, you felt it was the one subject he was interested in, though he might possibly be able to do it better than yourself. He never stopped learning; he liked, for instance, to visit a factory and see how things were made, and so add to his store of knowledge; and in his later years he took up cine-photography with enthusiasm and produced some delightful films. It was this keen interest in all that was going on around him that made him such an interesting companion.

105. Robert Fulford's Column About Bud Powell
Bud powell, idiot savant of the jazz piano by robert Fulford. (Globeand Mail, August 5, 1998). Listening to Bud powell s adventurous

by Robert Fulford
Globe and Mail , August 5, 1998) Listening to Bud Powell's adventurous and confident piano playing in the 1940s and 1950s, it was hard to believe the rumours that swirled around him: people said he was emotionally helpless in most situations, he sometimes cracked up completely, and for long periods he was forcibly confined in a mental hospital. Powell was among the shining stars of bebop when it emerged from Harlem as the great American art music of the period, but he lived a private life of intense melancholy and terrifying confusion. He was a child-man and, like his friend and colleague Charlie Parker, a relentless self-destroyer. His troubles could briefly disappear when he performed. On May 15, 1953, Powell played a concert in Toronto with Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach. It was a remarkable occasion, the first and last time those five men appeared together. A live recording, Jazz at Massey Hall, has won it a reputation as history's greatest jazz concert. In my memory of the evening, Powell remains the most compelling player, a bubbling fountain of crystal intelligence and ferocious energy. No one quite understood his illness, partly because he avoided doctors whenever he could. Some stories suggest autism: "He barely speaks and between pieces seems lost in a dream," a French critic wrote in 1954. If left alone, he might wander off and live in the streets for days. Working in Paris in the sixties, he would elude his keepers and beg for drinking money outside bars; by then his liver was so damaged that two glasses of wine made him drunk. Several psychiatrists called him schizophrenic. When he was treated for tuberculosis at a sanatorium in France, a doctor wrote: "Psychologically, he was like an infant."

"B-P" – CHIEF SCOUT OF THE WORLD
GROWING UP The name of Baden-Powell is known and respected throughout the world as that of a man who in his 83 years led two separate and complete lives, one as a soldier fighting for his country, and the other as a worker for peace through the brotherhood of the Scout Movement. Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell, known as B-P, was born at 6 Stanhope Street (now 11, Stanhope Terrace) Paddington, London on 22nd February 1857. He was the sixth son and the eighth of ten children of the Reverend Baden Powell, a Professor at Oxford University. The names Robert Stephenson were those of his Godfather, the son of George Stephenson the railway pioneer. His father died when B-P was only three years old and the family were left none too well off. B-P was given his first lessons by his mother and later attended Rose Hill School, Tunbridge Wells, where he gained a scholarship for admittance to Charterhouse School. Charterhouse School was in London when B-P first attended but whilst he was there it moved to Godalming in Surrey, a factor which had great influence later in his life.

Colin Powell Does Sam Beckett
by ROBERT FISK S ources, foreign intelligence sources, "our sources," defectors, sources, sources, sources. Colin Powell's terror talk to the United Nations Security Council yesterday sounded like one of those government-inspired reports on the front page of The New York Timeswhere it will most certainly be treated with due reverence in this morning's edition. It was a bit like heating up old soup. Haven't we heard most of this stuff before? Should one trust the man? General Powell, I mean, not Saddam. Certainly we don't trust Saddam but Secretary of State Powell's presentation was a mixture of awesomely funny recordings of Iraqi Republican Guard telephone intercepts a la Samuel Beckett that just might have been some terrifying little proof that Saddam really is conning the UN inspectors again, and some ancient material on the Monster of Baghdad's all too well known record of beastliness. I am still waiting to hear the Arabic for the State Department's translation of "Okay Buddy""Consider it done, Sir"this from the Republican Guard's "Captain Ibrahim", for heaven's sakeand some dinky illustrations of mobile bio-labs whose lorries and railway trucks were in such perfect condition that they suggested the Pentagon didn't have much idea of the dilapidated state of Saddam's army.

SECRETARY OF STATE Colin Powell's trip to the Middle East is shaping up to be a disaster. Vice President Cheney's recent trip marked a detour from the Bush Doctrine; the president's recent statements pressuring Israel to stop its campaign against terrorism, a retreat; the secretary's trip so far risks turning a retreat into a rout.
President Bush's goal in sending the secretary to the Middle East was to arrange a cease-fire by insisting that Israel end its military operations on the West Bank, while in exchange insisting that the Arab states pressure Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat to give up his campaign of terror against Israel.
Within the first 24 hours of Secretary Powell's trip, however, it became clear that the United States was getting no help from the leaders of Morocco, Saudi Arabia, or Egypt in the war against terrorism. To the contrary, the secretary has been publicly rebuked by those we had counted on to pressure Arafat. Powell's response, however, was not to challenge our Arab "friends" to meet their responsibilities but to abandon the conditions that Vice President Cheney had insisted on just weeks ago for meeting Arafat. As a result, the administration's policy has come down to pressuring Israel, while giving a free ride to Arafat and the terrorists he directs. This is not a case of moral equivalence; it's worse.

    Baden-Powell, Lord Robert (1857-1941)
page: British military hero and founder of the Boy Scouts and the Girl Guides, Lord Robert Baden-Powell was probably a homosexual. Certainly, most of his life was spent in same-sex environments and his deepest emotional commitment was with another man. Family Background and Education Baden-Powell was born on February 22, 1857 in London to Henrietta Grace Powell and the Reverend Baden Powell, a professor of Geometry at Oxford. He was christened Robert Stephenson Smyth Powell. He was the eighth of the couple's children. Sponsor Message.
Baden-Powell's father died only three years after his birth, leaving his mother to raise nine children on her own. On September 21, 1869, his mother added Baden to the Powell family name in honor of her late husband. Thus, all the children's last names became Baden-Powell. Throughout his life, Baden-Powell lavished praise on the powerful role his mother played in the family and celebrated motherhood as the most cherished of institutions.

E-Mail This Article Published on Monday, January 26, 2004 by CommonDreams.org Robert S. McNamara, Colin Powell & "The Fog of War" by Bernard Weiner Secretary of State Colin Powell should be forced to view the new Errol Morris "Fog of War" film. You may have heard about it: a documentary interview with former Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara, plus lots of historical film footage and dynamite audiotape recordings of Presidents Kennedy and Johnson talking frankly with McNamara and other advisors about Cuba and Vietnam. In "Fog of War" which opened recently nationwide McNamara, in his mid-80s, speaks agonizingly of his moral culpability in World War II and later in Vietnam in the '60s and early-'70s. McNamara saw himself as a loyal soldier, who told the truth to his boss, the President of the United States that the Vietnam war was unwinnable, that the best thing the U.S. could hope for was an endless stalemate but who was overruled. Rather than resign in protest, as a way of perhaps saving tens of thousands of American (and many hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese civilian) lives, he stayed on as a technocrat, positively spinning the war news while leading a disastrous campaign he knew made no sense. His soul was forever tarnished. Secretary Powell could have saved his soul when he came to realize that the nuclear-related "intelligence" being used by the Bush Administration to pave its way to war in Iraq was "bullshit" (his term). But, a loyal soldier to his boss, he has chosen to stick out his four-year term. Similar to what happened to McNamara, Powell early on tried to ameliorate the worst policies of Rumsfeld and his neo-con cabal at the Defense Department, and maybe Powell still believes he's playing that role now.
