Siege of Mafikeng - Cultural perspective
At the end of the millennium the town of Mafikeng is commemorating the siege of Mafikeng. As part of our role in reconsiliation and as being homeshoolers of different ages and levels of shooling, we decided to research the Anglo Boer war of 1899 and more in particular the cultures involved. We did however include some of the military aspects. As the members of team have different interests the webpage will reflect those interests. The webpage will be used to provide information to interested parties, so that the research can be made available to the general public. People and their families usualy have a lot of memories to share but nobody to listen to it. We hope that this page will continue for a long time and serve the purpose it is meant for - to help to reconsile and to commemorate. It was established in 1902 by King Edward VII as a reward for distinguished service in the armed forces, science, art, literature, or for the promotion of culture. The order is limited to twenty-four members, but additional foreigners may be added as "honourary members". The order is open to women; Florence Nightingale was the first of them, being appointed in 1907. Members are entitled to the post-nominal "OM". The badge has the appearance of a red Maltese Cross surmounted by a golden crown.

GCMG The Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George is an order of chivalry in the British honours system primarily awarded to British civil servants and others for service in the Diplomatic Service, or for service in the Commonwealth and in the Overseas Territories The Order was established in 1832 to commemorate the British protectorate over the Ionian Islands. It included the Great Master (always the Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands), 15 Knights Grand Cross, 20 Knights Commanders and 25 Companions. After the repudiation of the protectorate, the Order's basis was revised so as to make its membership a reward for service in British colonies and in foreign nations.

Robert Baden-Powell and the early development of Scouting
In 1885 Robert Baden-Powell started collecting material for a book on army scouting. Eventually published in 1899, because of his celebrity status, it became an instant bestseller- selling more 100,000 copies within the first few months. The ideas were seized upon by a number of people working with boys and young men and Robert Baden-Powell was encouraged to write a version for boys. He was also working on his own ideas about education. The Boys Brigade (founded October 4, 1883 in Glasgow by William Smith [1854-1914) was an obvious place for his work - but while there were many things for Robert Baden-Powell to admire in their activities he was put off by the emphasis on drill and what he saw as a lack of attention to developing the mind and sympathy with others. Robert Baden-Powell had become concerned about the well-being of of the nation - and of particular young people. It has been said that the poor physical condition of the young men attempting to join the army during the Boer War was a central factor in his championing and fashioning of Scouting. One report at the time (1904) claimed that of every nine who volunteered to fight, only two were fit to do so. Diet, poor housing, and harmful working conditions were identified as contributory factors. However, he was equally worried about people's physical and mental well-being. Physical 'deterioration' and 'moral degeneracy' became themes in many of the talks and speeches that Robert Baden-Powell gave - especially in the period after the Boer War. Reflecting on his experience of the Boys' Brigade he first thought that something could be done within that organization to move away from an over-focus on marching and drill:

'B-P' joined the 13th Hussars in 1876 as a 2nd lieutenant. He was excused the Sandhurst course because of his high placing in the exam and gazetted straight into the regiment, then stationed in India. From the start he showed an aptitude for and enjoyment of military scouting and irregular warfare. He also developed an aptitude for pig-sticking, winning the inter-regimental cup in 1883. He was detached for scouting service in Africa, in the Ashanti (1895) and Matabele (1896) campaigns.
In 1897 he transferred to the 5th Dragoon Guards which he Commanded. While he was on leave in England in 1899 he was summarily appointed to raise a force of mounted rifles to be based in Mafeking with the secret aim of making raids on the Boers in Transvaal. Baden-Powell was a publicity-seeking man and his hour had come. Mafeking was beseiged by a superior force of Boers on October 12th 1899 which lasted for 217 days until May 17th 1900. The relief of Mafeking was celebrated throughout the Empire as it was the first victory the British had achieved in the Boer War. But was Baden-Powell (he pronounced his name 'Poel') deserving of his hero status? He was certainly inovative, resourceful and cool under stress, but he had his failures. Nowadays, one hundred years after the event, what we find most unforgivable was his treatment of the black population of Mafeking.
It was an unstated agreement between Boers and British that no blacks were to be involved in the war. B-P took the unprecedented step of arming 300 Africans (with rather antiquated weapons), and christened them the 'Black Watch' setting them out to guard part of the perimeter. As it happened, they proved invaluable. What was infinitely worse, was his forced expulsions of blacks. On one occasion, 700 Baralong women were persuaded to attempt a mass exodus. Only 10 got away, the rest returned, many having been stripped and flogged by the Boers.
