Porter, Cole Porter, Cole, , American composer and lyricist, b. Peru, Ind., grad. Yale, 1913. Porter's witty, sophisticated lyrics and his affecting melodies place him high in the ranks of American composers of popular music. He was an elegant and debonair man, in spite of a riding accident (1937) that left him crippled. He studied music at Harvard and with D'Indy at the Schola Cantorum in Paris. After one early failure, most of his musicals were vastly successful. They include Greenwich Village Follies Gay Divorce Anything Goes Jubilee Red, Hot and Blue Du Barry Was a Lady Panama Hattie Something for the Boys Kiss Me, Kate Can-Can (1953); and Silk Stockings (1955). Among Porter's film scores are Born to Dance (1936) and High Society See The Cole Porter Song Book (1959); R. Kimball, ed.

I've had this idea for a long time: Americans tend to create their most characteristic art when they think they're doing something else. Our dramatic tradition is not the stage as much as the movies. Even there, note that we make movies, rather than "films." That is, John Ford made movies (and Westerns at that), whereas nice boys like the Cohn brothers make films. While Americans have produced great art song in the tradition of Europe, it turns out that the so-called "standards" from the teens through the 40s have a deeper hold not only on the natives' affections, but on much of the rest of the world's as well. I may, for example, admire - or even be moved by - Barber's "Sure on this shining night," but I make some sort of effort to bring it to consciousness. On the other hand, I find myself humming "Our Love Is Here to Stay" or "Don't Get Around Much Anymore." Can we even call this "tradition?" None of the music is very old, after all, and we tend to regard it, while the paint is still spanking new, as disposable. Producers, composers, lyricists, and "book" writers for decades looked on the Broadway show (even with such examples as

Bill breaks down and confesses to Lois that he is involved with gangsters, who have his I.O.U. for $10,000 from a crap game. This is not the first time Lois has had to tolerate Bill's escapades, and she inquires poignantly why he cannot behave himself ("Why Can't You Behave?"). Meanwhile Fred and his ex-wifethough divorcedbegin to realize that their one-time tender feelings for each other have not completely died out. They start to reminisce about the shows in which they had appearedincluding an old-fashioned Viennese operetta ("Wunderbar"). Just before the opening night of The Taming of the Shrew , Fred sends his star, Lola, flowers. By mistake they come to Lilli's dressing roomfurther proof to her that Fred still loves her. She now openly reveals that that love is reciprocated ("So In Love").

A synopsis and brief history of the musical by cole porter.
    http://www.theatrehistory.com/american/musical020.html
ANYTHING GOES Purchase The Cast Album Sheet Music Book by COLE PORTER Originally Staged by HOWARD LINDSAY First produced at the Alvin Theatre on November 21, 1934, with William Gaxton as "Billy", Ethel Merman as "Reno" and Victor Moore as "Moon". T HE main action takes place on a luxury liner sailing from New York to Southampton. But first we come to a preliminary scene in a smart New York bar. Reno Sweeney, a night-club entertainer, on the eve of leaving for Europe, expresses her sentiments for Billy Crocker in "I Get a Kick Out of You". Once she boards the liner she discovers to her delight that Billy is also a passenger, though an unlisted one. He had come to bid Reno " bon voyage " when he comes upon his one-time fiancée, Hope Harcourt, en route All the principals come to Oakleigh's home in England, where Hope and Sir Evelyn are to get married. The prospect of marriage pleases neither of them, since their union had been an arrangement of convenience to save Bailey Products, a floundering business establishment. But Hope and Sir Evelyn soon learn that Bailey Products is not bankrupt at all; that, indeed, a buyer stands ready to purchase it for several million dollars. Thus Hope and Evelyn are free to go their separate ways. Hope returns to Billy, while Sir Evelyn and Reno discover each other. Meanwhile, word has come down from Washington, D.C., that "Moon" is free to go as he pleases: the police are not interested in him at all, since he is as harmless as a cream-puff. The sudden loss of status upsets the little man to no end. "Sometimes," he whines, "I just can't understand

Anything Goes Music: Cole Porter Lyrics: Cole Porter Anything Goes was first envisioned by producer Vinton Freedley while hiding out aboard a fishing boat in the Gulf of Panama after fleeing the country to escape creditors. His idea was based on the premise of an ocean liner facing the threat of a possible shipwreck. He returned to New York and, after paying off his debts, began assembling his dream team: Cole Porter, Guy Bolton, P.G. Wodehouse, Ethel Merman. Soon Freedley had a script that he felt sure would reverse his sagging fortunes. Then, with rehearsals just about to begin, the S.S. Morro Castle went down off the coast of New Jersey. Over 125 passengers lost their lives in the highly publicized disaster. Anything Goes, Freedley decided, would have to be rewritten. Anything Goes did not actually appear as the title until this second draft and referred to the desperation with which the show was put together. The rewrite retained most of the same characters, but did away with the idea of the shipwreck. The plot revolved around nightclub singer Reno Sweeney (Merman), her pall Billy Crocker, Crocker's debutante-love Hope Harcourt, Moon-Face Mooney, and Public Enemy No. 13 who slips onto the ship to avoid the FBI. Anything Goes opened at the Alvin Theatre on November 21, 1934 and turned out to be the fourth longest running musical of the 30s. In 1987, it was revived at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre with Patti LuPone in the leading role and a revised book by Timothy Crouse and John Weidman. The 1936 screen version starred Ethel Merman and Bing Crosby.

Biography of composer and lyricist cole porter, plus analysis of his contributions to the development of American musical comedy.

COLE PORTER: THE GREAT SOPHISTICATE This article was originally published in The Story of America's Musical Theater . David Ewen. New York: Chilton Company, 1961. pp. 134-139. W Most of all he himself is like a character from a novel of F. Scott Fitzgerald. All his life Cole Porter was the avid hunter of excitement, adventure, and gaiety; all his life he traveled under the banner of "anything goes". He was the sybarite to whom the good things of life was almost a religion. Provocative in his attitudes, unpredictable in mood and action, irresponsible in behavior, he was truly a living symbol of the decade in which he first achieved maturity as a song writer. America First , described in the program as "a patriotic comic opera," in which Clifton Webb starred as a titled Englishman. America First was produced by Elizabeth Marbury, the same person who had just then scored such a decisive success as a co-producer of the first Princess Theater Show. She could hardly have realized then that in young Cole Porter she had another gilt-edge investment, since America First lasted only 2 weeks.
