PORTER, COLE
, songwriter. A new kind of popular song was heard in the United States after World War I, its lyrics earthy, sophisticated, and altogether un-Victorian, its melody and rhythm influenced by black jazz and European impressionism. One of the leading composers of the new music was Cole Porter of Peru, Indiana, Yale University, and a "smart set" that made London, Paris, Biarritz, Venice, and Manhattan its playground. Although he is best known for the cleverness, double entendres, and sexual suggestiveness of his lyrics and for melodies that pulse with a Latin or tropical beat, Porter in fact created dazzlingly diverse poems and tunes, some classically romantic, others the delight of jazz musicians. Born to wealth and indulged by an adoring mother, Porter early on displayed remarkable talent for musical composition, deft phrasemaking, and high living. When he wrote in "I Get a Kick Out of You," "I get no kick from cocaine," he wrote from personal experience, as he did, also, in "Anything Goes," in which he observed that, when "every night the set that's smart is intruding in nudist parties in studios, anything goes!" As a composer, however, Cole was as disciplined and hardworking as any Calvinist, and fortunately, he was blessed with a genius for songwriting that transcended his personal experiences. Only George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, and Irving Berlin could match him in the quality and quantity of enduring songs they created—and of this nonpareil group only Berlin and Porter wrote both the words and the music of their songs.

Cole Porter Biography written by JX Bell Cole Porter's name derives from the surnames of his parents, Kate Cole and Sam Porter. Kate's father, James Omar (known as J. O.), was an influential man both in the community and in Cole's early life. J.O. started from humble beginnings as son of a shoemaker, but his business savvy and strong work ethic made him the richest man in Indiana. Despite J.O.'s obsessive drive for making money, he took time off to marry Rachel Henton, who had several children with him. Kate Cole was born in 1862, and was spoiled during her youth (as well as later in life). She always had the best clothes, the best education, and the best training in dancing and music. Her father had every expectation of marrying her off to a man with a strong business background, a strong personality, and the potential for a good career. As it is for many filial presumptions and expectations, Kate married someone who was quite the opposite a shy druggist from their small town of Peru, Indiana. The couple married without the full consent of J.O., but he financially supported their wedding and subsidized the couple. As one of the richest men in Indiana, he thought his daughter should be seen doing and wearing the right things without financial fears. These subsidies from J.O. financed the rest of Sam and Kate's life, as well as that of their son born on June 9th, 1891: Cole Porter.

Porter, Cole (1891-1964)
page: For more than thirty years, Cole Porter was as well known for the (often scandalously) witty and urbane music that he crafted for Broadway musicals and Hollywood films, as for being one of the leaders of international cafe society. Because he feared that the music-buying public would not take seriously love songs written by a homosexual, he lived the paradoxical life of an openly closeted gay man. Married to socialite Linda Lee Thomas, one of the most beautiful women of her generation (but variously reported as from eight to fourteen years Porter's senior), he publicly maintained a heterosexual facade while privately indulging in weekend all-male gatherings that included chorus boys, wartime servicemen, and Hollywood bit players, in addition to conducting intense, short-lived love affairs with Ballets Russes designer Boris Kochko, architect Eddy Tauch, dancer-choreographer Nelson Barclift, and actor Robert Bray, among others.
