Als "Little Mary" werd zij een ster in "The little teacher" (1910).

Mary Pickford
Mary Pickford. Portrait taken from a French postcard advertisement for United Artists. (Aberdeen collection). Mary Pickford became famous portraying naive, childish characters on screen. In contrast—her real-life persona was a mixture of mature acting ability, razor-sharp filmmaking, and astute business acumen, the combination of which seemed almost other-worldly. By the time she entered movies, working at age seventeen for D. W. Griffith , she was already a stage veteran with nearly a decade of experience. Later she became the most famous performer in Adolph Zukor's Famous Players company. Her popularity helped establish Paramount as the foremost studio. And though she was not the first female performer to achieve star status, Pickford was arguably the movies' first superstar. The journalist and Hollywood columnist Adela Rogers St. Johns

Mary Pickford (1892-1979), born Gladys Marie Smith, was queen of the American screen from 1909 to 1933. Together with D.W. Griffith, Douglas Fairbanks, and Charlie Chaplin, she established United Artists in 1919, and later, became one of the thirty-six founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Her career encompassed approximately 236 films, including Through the Back Door (1921), which was co-directed by her brother, Jack Pickford. Mary Pickford wrote the script for the film, which is remembered for one of the best comic sequences of her career a scene in which she plays a Belgian refugee maid who decides to scrub the floor by attaching brushes to her feet. One of the co-founders of United Artists at a time that most women didn't even work, Mary Pickford was more than an Academy Award winning actress (for her work in "Coquette"). She helped her country during World War I by traveling throughout the nation and encouraging people to buy Liberty Bonds. Successful and powerful, Mary was able to get a pay raise whenever Charlie Chaplin got one and for more money. Businesswoman, movie maker, and "America's Sweetheart," Mary was one of people who helped incorporate Beverly Hills, and one street, Pickfair, still bears the combination of her name and that of her one-time husband, Douglas Fairbanks. In 1958, as Mrs. Buddy Rogers, Mary had one of the greatest jewelry collections in the world. www.albert-einstein.net
