The Famous Patton Speech by Charles M. Province The following text is actually one of the chapters in my first "Patton" book, titled "The Unknown Patton." The entire book may be purchased from the Society's PX, which is accessible from the main web page. - Charles M. Province General Patton's Address to the Troops Part I The Background Research Anyone who has ever viewed the motion picture PATTON will never forget the opening. George Campbell Scott, portraying Patton, standing in front of an immensely huge American flag, delivers his version of Patton's "Speech to the Third Army" on June 5th, 1944, the eve of the Allied invasion of France, code-named "Overlord". Scott's rendition of the speech was highly sanitized so as not to offend too many fainthearted Americans. Luckily, the soldiers of the American Army who fought World War II were not so fainthearted. After one of my lectures on the subject of General Patton, I spoke with a retired Major-General who was a close friend of Patton and who had been stationed with him in the 1930's in the Cavalry. He explained to me that the movie was a very good portrayal of Patton in that it was the way he wanted his men and the public to see him, as a rugged, colorful commander. There was one exception, however, according to the Major General. In reality, Patton was a much more profane speaker than the movie dared to exhibit. Patton had a unique ability regarding profanity. During a normal conversation, he could liberally sprinkle four letter words into what he was saying and the listeners would hardly take notice of it. He spoke so easily and used those words in such a way that it just seemed natural for him to talk that way.

Patton (1970) is the epic film biography of the controversial, bombastic, multi-dimensional World War II general and hero George S. Patton. The larger-than-life, flamboyant, maverick, pugnacious military figure, nicknamed "Old Blood and Guts," was well-known for his fierce love of America, his temperamental battlefield commanding, his arrogant power-lust ("I love it. God help me, I do love it so. I love it more than my life"), his poetry writing, his slapping of a battle-fatigued soldier, his anti-diplomatic criticism of the Soviet Union, and his firing of pistols at fighter planes. The film, shot in 70 mm. widescreen color, received a phenomenal ten Academy Awards nominations and won seven major awards: Best Picture, Best Actor (Scott refused to accept the honor), Best Director (Franklin J. Schaffner), Best Story and Screenplay (Francis Ford Coppola and Edmund H. North), Best Art Direction/Set Decoration, Best Sound, and Best Film Editing. Its other three nominations were: Best Cinematography, Best Original Score (Jerry Goldsmith), and Best Special Visual Effects. PATTON is one of the best 'war' movies ever made. Sweeping in scope, the film captures the spirit and character of General George S. Patton, Jr., America's most dashing and colorful General of World War Two. This is a 'mini' history lesson of the war in Europe. Everyone is there Patton (George C. Scott), Bradley ( Karl Malden) and Montgomery (Michael Bates) and played remarkably true to life. In fact, the entire film pays excellent attention to the truth. Even the opening speech in the film is quoted from the actual Patton speeches There is remarkably little combat action in this Oscar winning film (Eight, including Best Picture of 1970). It is, instead, a captivating portrait of Patton's unique leadership style demanding, dynamic, aggressive, but fair. That, along with his relationship to the soldier's soldier, Bradley, and his conflict with the other super-ego of the film, Montgomery, make this film a treasure. PATTON is one of five films on this site that cover the tumultuous years of the Second World War. The others are

http://www.eyeneer.com/America/Genre/Profiles/BLUES/patton.html
CHARLEY PATTON
Charley Patton is considered, with some justification, to be the archetypal Mississippi Delta Blues singer, but he can equally well be thought of as a songster, in view of wide-ranging repertoire - blues, ballads, spirituals and popular songs - that he displays on record. However he differs from contemporaries like Mississippi John Hurt and Mance Lipscomb in that he used the blues as a vehicle for an intensely personal music expression. Many of his recorded performances are so powerful as to be unsurpassed within the genre. Patton was born in Hinds County, central Mississippi, probably in April, 1891, and had black, white, Indian blood. At the turn the century, blues was still in the process of evolution into a "seperate" musical form and the young Patton, now living on Dockery's Plantation in the Delta, with his parents Bill and Annie, was attracted by the music he heard around him and took up the guitar when in his early teens.
Bob Groom
Below is a sound sample Charley Patton's 78 rpm record, MISSISSIPPI BOWEAVIL BLUES, "side 1" of Paramont Records #12805 - which was recorded June 14, 1929 in Richmond, Indiana. Please bear in mind that this recording was done before the advent of modern recording techniques, nonetheless this historical performance herein is worth the "scratches."

http://www.ozemail.com.au/~mickay/patton.htm
General George S. PATTON
Soldier, General, Pilot, Athlete, Father, Gun Owner, Hero, Legend U NLIKE many war heroes who had no intention of ever becoming famous, George Patton decided during childhood that his goal in life was to be a hero. This noble aim was first inspired by listening to his father read aloud for hours about the exploits of the heroes of ancient Greece. Homer's Iliad and Odyssey were particular favourites of young Georgie, who could recite lines from both texts long before he could even lift a sword. These classic images were filled out by recent war stories of living soldiers, particularly those of John Singleton ''Ranger'' Mosby. John often visited the Patton house and would entertain Georgie for hours with tales of his Civil War adventures. With this steady diet of combat regalia, Georgie was convinced that the profession of arms was his calling. Y oung George didn't want to be just any soldier; he had his sights fixed on becoming a combat general. He had one major obstacle to overcome, however. Though he was obviously intelligent (his knowledge of classical literature was encyclopaedic and he had learned to read military topographic maps by the age of 7), George didn't learn to read until he was 12 years old. It was only at age 12 when George was sent off to Stephen Cutter Clark's Classical School that he began to catch up on his academic skills; he managed to find plenty of time for athletics as well. While at school, the path toward his goal became focused he planned on attending West Point as the next major step in the pursuit of his general's stars.
