Locust Ridge, Tennessee, January 19, 1946 Elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame® 1999 With their strong feminine stances in the 1960s and 1970s, Dolly Rebecca Parton, along with fellow female pioneers Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette, revolutionized the world of country music for women performers. Then Parton took her crusade a step farther by crossing over to the pop world—landing on the cover of Rolling Stone, achieving pop hits, and starring in a series of Hollywood movies. Along the way, however, she ultimately lost much of her core country audience, to the point that in 1997 she dissolved her fan club, which had been one of the staunchest in country music. But Parton’s career—and her appeal to fans of hard country—was far from over. Beginning in 1999 she returned to the music of her youth and began rebuilding a tradition-minded fan base with a series of critically acclaimed bluegrass albums. Parton came from deep in Appalachia, where music was an integral part of life for those who, like the Partons, struggled to make a hard living. Her mother was a singer who taught Dolly church music along with the Elizabethan ballads her ancestors had brought to America. Dolly’s grandfather was a fiddling preacher who wrote “Singing His Praise,” which was recorded by Kitty Wells. Several of Dolly’s eleven siblings have been active in music, and some worked for a time in her family band.

Printer-Friendly Version Dolly Parton: Album Review by Todd Sterling Never has Dolly Parton sounded so good than on her last three bluegrass discs recorded for the Sugar Hill label. Parton shed her country-pop skin a number of years ago and hasn’t looked back since. (July 9th) is old time music with a contemporary slant from a female singer who wisely gave up her quest for cross-over success in the late 90's (although she has certainly had her share of such success). A disc from a female country artist who isn’t trying to be the next Faith or Shania is a welcome relief. The bubbly singer wrote twelve of the fourteen tracks on , covering ever subject under the sun. There’s love ("Sugar Hill"), salvation ("John Daniel"), and courage ("I’m Gone"). Dolly even has a few words for backbiters on "Shattered Image". "If you live in a glass house, don’t throw stones/don’t shatter my image ‘til you look at your own/look at your reflection in your house of glass/stay out of my closet if your own’s full of trash," Parton sings in a voice that is neither scolding nor condemning. "Halos & Horns" is a three-quarter-time shuffle that sounds as old as the hills and hearkens back to the days of artists like Hank Williams Sr. and Lefty Frizzell. Dolly and her crack band turn out an inspired performance. "Raven Dove" takes a spiritual look at the new heaven and earth Jesus promised his followers upon his return. "Hello God" is a heartfelt plea to our creator – Dolly asks many of the same questions that have been on a lot of our minds since September 11th of last year.
