NASA demos space Net

RELATED LINKS "Setting satellites to network time" [Federal Computer Week, May 1, 2000] "NASA's new "spacecraft" ideal for small families" [Federal Computer Week, May 1, 2000] NASA's faster, better, cheaper concept may get a boost from the Internet boom. A recent demonstration using commercial off-the-shelf networking products and standard Internet Protocol (IP) to communicate with an orbiting satellite is the first step in designing space missions more quickly, more cheaply and smarter. Federal agencies such as NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Defense Department and the National Imagery and Mapping Administration are just a few that could benefit by communicating with spacecraft using the same standardized, low-cost equipment used for ground-based networking.

That same year, I brought the book with me to an event where I met my first two astronauts, Deke Slayton and Charlie Walker. Both gentlemen signed near their entries, beginning a project I would continue with every astronaut I came into contact with since.

Hi everyone, I just thought I'd let you see this reply that I received from one of the crew that was riding on STS-35, the shuttle mission that I described in my previous posts. I think it provides quite a bit more insight on the rocket launch! X-Sender: parise@stars.gsfc.nasa.gov

During the first two minutes (while the solid rocket boosters are burning) there is a lot of low frequency vibration. It would be very loud but with your headset and helmet on you feel the noise more than hear it. The g-forces during that phase are about a constant 1.5 g's. Once the solids are gone at about 200,000ft altitude the ride gets very smooth. The acceleration starts to slowly increase to 3 g's and remains there for the remaining few minutes. At main engine cutoff you go from 3 g's to g's almost instantly! The whole ride takes about 8.5 minutes and wow what a ride!!

June 26, 2003 Draft Day Chess This past weekend, I was doing what everyone else in the hockey world was doing. My eyes were shifting rapidly between the real-time internet postings of the NHL Entry Draft and the television coverage on ESPN2 while trying to stay current on the phone, which rang periodically through the day. It was basic off-season hockey fun. In case you haven't checked it out, the NHL's Entry Draft is a little bit like an NCAA tournament pool. Like the plethora of sheets that get passed around office coolers each spring, there are a few surprise actions instigated by teams, and still more decisions not to act that raise an eyebrow or two. There are usually a few trades, and by Sunday's draft end, it becomes time to sift through a team's depth chart, and figure out what might be done next. What was the day like for GM Doug Wilson, in his first draft since being named to the position? Well, as I expected, he did a lot of listening but no dealing when it came to his team's two first round selections. After all, this draft was too deep and too important for the team to peddle either pick. That was Good Decision Number 1.

Ohio, "The Birthplace of Aviation," is home to 24 astronauts. Why so many? Ohio astronaut Tom Henricks , during the pre-flight press conference for STS-70 cited several contributing factors:
  • Role models such as John Glenn ("the first all Ohio crew") and Neil Armstrong , the first human to walk upon the Moon during the Apollo project The Midwestern work ethic
Native Clevelander Set Space Endurance Record
Ohio astronaut and Cleveland native Carl Walz spent six months in his a home away from home: the International Space Station (ISS). Walz was a part of the Expedition 4crew that traveled to the ISS aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour when it lifted off on December 5, 2001 to begin the STS-108 mission. He returned to Earth on June 5, 2002 during the STS-111 mission. During their stay aboard the ISS, Walz and Expedition 4 crew mate Dan Bursch broke the U.S. record for the longest single U.S. spaceflight. Walz also held the U.S. record for most cumulative time in space with 231 days, and while Bursch is second with 227 days. (That record was broken in December 2003 by NASA astronaut Michael Foale, International Space Station Expedition 8 Commander and NASA Science Officer.) During Expedition 4, Walz and Bursch conducted and monitored experiments (including some from NASA Glenn) and conducted several space walks. During his free time, Walz played a small musical keyboard and a guitar. [ More
