The HUT/Astro Photo Gallery
In addition to the large volume of astronomical data gathered during the Astro missions, the astronauts also obtained many spectacular photographs of the earth, the telescopes in the payload bay, and themselves! This page provides you with quick access to some of the best images obtained during the Astro missions.
Astro-1 Mission Patch
The Astro-1 Mission Patch shows a stylized shuttle with the telescopes in the payload bay. Graphics below the shuttle are symbolic of the specialties of each of the four telescopes that made up the scientific payload. (Astro-1)
Astro-1 Crew Patch
The Astro-1 Crew Patch was designed by the crew. It shows a stylized space shuttle taking off from earth, with the constellation Orion rising in the background. This constellation was high in the night sky for the December 1990 launch, and represented the astronomical nature of the mission. (Astro-1)

Sunday, February 2, 2003 Ohio astronaut: `Oh, my God'
By Amy Higgins and Dan Horn
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Ohio astronauts Mark Brown and Ronald Parise know what it's like to sit in the cabin of the space shuttle Columbia as the ship plunges through the Earth's atmosphere, traveling 18 times faster than the speed of sound. They have felt the extreme heat of re-entry through the faceplates of their spacesuits, and they have watched pieces of the shuttle's heat shield fly past the window as the ship's exterior glowed a brilliant orange. "You see behind you the fiery contrail," Brown said Saturday. "You're very much aware of what's going on." More than anyone, Brown and Parise know the risks associated with a shuttle mission. And yet they were as shocked as the rest of the nation Saturday as they watched Columbia break apart during re-entry. Parise, who flew on Columbia in 1990, said he turned on the television Saturday morning expecting to see the shuttle and its crew safely on the ground in Florida. Instead, he watched video images of the shuttle's remains falling to Earth from 200,000 feet. "I just thought, `Oh, my God,'" said Parise, originally of Warren, Ohio. "I didn't know what happened, but it looked bad."

Researcher Foresees Day
When Motorists No Longer
Need To Stop And "fill 'er up"
Warrendale, PA December 30, 1999 - You're cruising down the freeway in your electric vehicle in the year 2005 and are about to run out of "fuel." No need to panic, exit and stop for more power because you've already purchased your "energy units" at the local grocery store. Your car sends a signal to one of many power transmitters along the highway that "hear" your cry for help. As you continue driving, your vehicle is recharged. Ronald J. Parise, Research Scientist and President, Parise Research Technologies, refers to this new technical application as the Vehicle Remote Charge, described in a paper he will present at the Society of Automotive Engineers 2000 World Congress in Detroit, Michigan, March 6-9,2000. Parise's invention envisions an all-electric, wireless transportation system that will drastically reduce air pollution, while providing consumers full mobility and the convenience they currently enjoy with gasoline-powered vehicles. Current battery-driven electric vehicles have a range of only 80-100 miles before needing recharging. And the recharging process can take as much as 8-10 hours. This inconvenience is a major obstacle that automakers face in commercializing electric vehicles.
