PAGE 3 OF 3 GS: Do you see a large influx of Asians into the ranks of independent filmmakers?
GP: You bet. It's been great having Robot Stories out on the festival circuit at the same time as Eric Byler ( Charlotte Soemtimes ) and Justin Lin ( Better Luck Tomorrow ). And there are dozens, if not hundreds, of upcoming independent Asian American filmmakers. My friend Michael Kang just shot his first feature The Motel, which should set the world on fire next year. And filmmakers like Johanna Lee and Alice Liu are on the verge of getting their first features into production. Not to mention folks like Sam Chen and Ham Tran and Dean Yamada whose short films are winning awards right and left.
GS: Do you see Hollywood as becoming more open to Asian-themed projects?

Winner of over 30 awards ROBOT STORIES is science fiction from the heart, four stories starring Tamlyn Tomita ("Joy Luck Club," "Babylon 5") and Sab Shimono ("The Big Hit," "Suture") in which utterly human characters struggle to connect in a world of robot babies and android office workers. The stories include: "My Robot Baby," in which a couple must care for a robot baby before adopting a human child; "The Robot Fixer," in which a mother tries to connect with her dying son by completing his toy robot collection; "Machine Love," in which an office worker android learns that he, too, needs love; and "Clay," in which an old sculptor must choose between natural death and digital immortality. John Petrakis of the Chicago Tribune calls the film "one of the most moving pieces I've seen all year" while Entertainment Insiders calls it "the kind of science fiction sophisticated audiences crave and deserve." Filmmaker Greg Pak wants you to see his movie, Robot Stories Robot Stories is currently playing in New York and Washington D.C., and opens March 12 in Los Angeles (with more cities to follow). How's it going? Very well, thank you very much. How was opening weekend in NYC? www.robotstories.net Tell us a little bit about yourself... I'm a thirty-something Korean American hapa haole who grew up in Texas and studied political science at Yale and history at Oxford before going to NYU Grad Film and becoming an independent filmmaker. I have glasses and a beard and these days I'm usually wearing a big red coat. What inspired you to make Robot Stories ? Why robots? If you had to sell this movie to some guy on the street, how would you describe it? Like most independently released films, you're operating on what you've described as a "miserably small distribution budget." What's the key to marketing this film? Could you have done it without the internet? The key to marketing the film was figuring out what our target audiences were and how to get to 'em. The festival circuit was essential for that. I'd always know that two of our big target audiences were twenty and thirty-something Asian Americans and science fiction fans. Our experiences at Asian American and science fiction festivals confirmed that. But we played dozens of other festivals at which general audiences responded incredibly well. As wonderful white-haired ladies kept telling me how much they loved the movie, I began to realize that the film could really click with traditional arthouse cinema goers, which is a typically older and whiter crowd.

LEE, MOUSE, and FIGHTING GRANDPA have been screened in festivals across the country, including Shorts International Film Festival, New York; NYU First Run Film Festival; and the San Francisco International Asian-American Film Festival.
Questionnaires were sent to each artist participating in REEL NEW YORK Season Three. Below are the artist's written responses.
Greg Pak
Mouse
What compelled you to make this piece? How does this work address issues that are important to you or close to your heart?
I had three goals in making MOUSE: I wanted to explore an act of everyday cowardice; I wanted to present Asian American characters in non-stereotypical situations; and I wanted to play with horror movie conventions in an unexpected domestic context.
From MOUSE. How does living in the New York metropolitan area affect your work?
I love New York. Every day I bump into someone else's drama. Just this weekend, I overheard a couple flirting outside my window, saw a man weeping on the subway, and watched a tyrannical child scolding her mother on the train. I don't know any other town which provides such a constant, public display of private pain and humor. It's a great place for a writer to live.
In including your work in REEL NEW YORK, do you think your piece in any way pushes the medium of television, or the viewing audiences' expectations of that medium?

"Robot Stories," an uneven collection of four vignettes about people and technology, is best when it's less science-fictiony and more human.
By JOSHUA TANZER Offoffoff.com (Originally reviewed at the 2003 Asian American Film Festival.) ROBOT STORIES Written and directed by: Greg Pak. Cast: Tamlyn Tomita, Sab Shimono, Wai Ching Ho, Greg Pak, Vivian Bang, John Cariani, Cindy Cheung, Bill Coelius, Eisa Davis, Ron Domingo, Norma Fire, Rachel Haynes, Rachel P. Haynes, Tim Kang, Julienne Hanzelka Kim, Vin Knight, Glenn Kubota, Oliver Oguma, James Saito, Joshua Spafford Related links: Official site To start, as the film does, with the worst first, there's "My Robot Baby," about a couple (Korean-American by the looks of them) who want to adopt a baby but are given a robot instead for a parental trial run. The little thing coos for daddy but seems to have it in for mommy, jabbing her with some sharp protrusion whenever she comes near. What a bad little robot baby. It could just as well be Chucky.

Greg Pak rides the Asian American film wave with Robot Stories
BY JASON WOO Greg Pak is a busy man. The writer/director of the indie breakout Robot Stories , a “science fiction from the heart,” has been traveling so much for the past year and a half to promote his debut feature that he barely has time to catch his breath.
An accomplished writer, Pak’s screenplay Rio Chino won the 2002 IFP Market Pipedream Screenwriting Award and a 2003 Rockefeller Media Arts Fellowship. Pak also wrote the screenplay for MVP, a feature film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this past January. Also a long-time filmmaker, Pak has directed several shorts such as “All Amateur Ecstasy” and “Fighting Grandpa” that have won awards and were screened at film awards around the world. Winning over critics and audiences alike for Robot Stories , while garnering over 20 film festival awards, Pak was named by Filmmaker Magazine as one of the top 25 filmmakers to watch in 2003.
ChopBlock.com caught up with Pak on a rare break from his schedule in Boston where

NEW YORK, NY, USA - Winner of over 23 film festival awards, director Greg Pak's anthology of four robot-related science fiction stories makes for an impressive debut. Taking a decidely indie direction, Pak gives an insider spin to his science fiction. In one tale, "My Robot Baby," a couple (Tamlyn Tomita and James Saito) must care for a robot baby before adopting a human child; in "Machine Love," an office worker droid (Pak) learns that he, too, needs love with unpredictable and humorous results. In the most fatalistic and philosophic story, "Clay," a dying sculptor (Sab Shimono) choses between natural death and digital immortality. Only one tale isn't really scifi "The Robot Fixer," tells of a mother (Wai Ching Ho) who tries to reach her dying comatose son by completing his toy robot collection.

My feature film “Robot Stories” is screening theatrically in San Francisco and Berkeley for at least one week starting Friday, April 16! The Bay Area is a hugely important market for our independently produced, independently distributed little film. *Our marketing budget is laughably small, which means we’re relying enormously on the kindness of friends and strangers in getting the word out. Would you please, please, please encourage your friends, neighbors, students, colleagues, etcetera in the Bay Area to come see the film? Feel free to pass on word to your film festival or community group newsletters; to write about the film on your blog; to email any local press you might have a personal contact with. *Handy blurbage is below for your forwarding pleasure.
