    James E. Carter, Jr.
39th President of the United States INTERVIEW
    October 25, 1991
    Atlanta, Georgia
When you were growing up, what did you think you would do with your life? Well, from the time I was five years old, I wanted to go to the Naval Academy and get a college education, and serve in the U.S. Navy. My family have been farmers for 350 years in this country. It was during the depression years, in the late thirties and forties, and a college education was looked upon as financially impossible. So the only two choices we had were to go to West Point or Annapolis, where the government paid for the education. I had a favorite uncle who was in the Navy, so I chose Annapolis. When I was eighteen years old, I went to college to prepare and went on to Annapolis. Did you ever want to be anything else, like a policeman or a fire fighter? Not really. I always had a pretty singular commitment then, not knowing that I would serve a while in the Navy and then get involved in other things. But the college challenge, or dream, was very vivid to me. If I hadn't gotten into the Naval Academy, then I would probably have, very possibly, become a college professor and gone on to graduate work. But as a child, I had a single-minded commitment to go to Annapolis. At some point you got out of the Navy and became interested in politics. What attracted you to that?

1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard (No. 1)
The most used guitar which Jimmy Page has relied on since the early days of Led Zeppelin. It's finish has faded through the years. The serial number has been lost during neck repairs and the replacement bridge pickup has long been without a cover. The original white Kluson tuners have been replace by gold-plated Grovers.
1958 Gibson Les Paul Standard (No. 2)
A gift from Joe Walsh. The tuners have been replaced. The neck has been shaved to resemble No. 1. The bridge has been rounded over for easier access to individual strings in use with the violin bow. Most famously, this guitar features a pair of spring-loaded buttons under the scratch plate offering new pickup configurations. One of the buttons puts the pickup into series or parallel and the other offers regular or out-of-phase tones. In addition, the tone and volume pots have been replaced by two pairs of push/pulls giving coil-tapping on either pickup or the possibility of employing all four coils in parallel. Serial number is 91703

Jimmy Carter Jimmy Carter aspired to make Government "competent and compassionate," responsive to the American people and their expectations. His achievements were notable, but in an era of rising energy costs, mounting inflation, and continuing tensions, it was impossible for his administration to meet these high expectations. Carter, who has rarely used his full nameJames Earl Carter, Jr.was born October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia. Peanut farming, talk of politics, and devotion to the Baptist faith were mainstays of his upbringing. Upon graduation in 1946 from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, Carter married Rosalynn Smith. The Carters have three sons, John William (Jack), James Earl III (Chip), Donnel Jeffrey (Jeff), and a daughter, Amy Lynn. After seven years' service as a naval officer, Carter returned to Plains. In 1962 he entered state politics, and eight years later he was elected Governor of Georgia. Among the new young southern governors, he attracted attention by emphasizing ecology, efficiency in government, and the removal of racial barriers.

In his early years, Jimmy Stewart came to personify the Everyman. His stuttered speech, long legs and clumsy hands seemed to give his characters a familiar quality with which most Americans could easily identify. But he was never bumbling or blundering, and as he matured he began to take on more intense roles. His later characters tended to be consumed rather than bewildered by their passions. Nonetheless, he continued to radiate the wholesomeness of the boy-next-door and it is for this that he is best remembered. "Hollywood dishes out too much praise for small things,'' Jimmy once said. "I won't let it get me, but too much praise can turn a fellow's head if he doesn't watch his step.''
Did you know that Jimmy Stewart made a musical? Yep. Back in the days when MGM was still trying to figure out what to do with him. Here's a poster from BORN TO DANCE (1936) with Eleanor Powell.
    Memorable Quotations:
"I never met a dame yet that wasn't a nit-wit and a lump head." as Guy Johnson in IT'S A WONDERFUL WORLD (1939).

    Jimmy Giuffre
Biography In the early 1950s, he moved to Los Angeles and became a fixture in what was to be known as "West Coast Jazz Movement." There he studied with Dr. Wesley La Violette, one of Jimmy's major influences in the field of composition, and developed a reputation as one fine reed player (on tenor and baritone saxophones and clarinet) and composer. By 1955 he was working not only without piano but also without drums, playing most notably in a trio with guitarist Jim hall and valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer. (They are heard playing "The Train and the River" in the famed Newport Jazz Festival movie Jazz on a Summer's Day . The group's whole set that day can be heard on the Fresh Sound disc listed below.) In 1959 (and again in 1962), he recorded solo clarinet pieces and wrote orchstral music with conductor-improvised cues, both anticipating trends a decade or more in the future. His music gradually changed from "blues-based folk jazz" (his term) to a new, quiet free jazz with a new Jimmy Giuffre 3 (again drumless, with pianist Paul Bley and bassist Steve Shallow). During these periods, he also composed music for larger ensembles as well as for theater, film and dance companies. He brought clarinet to the fore of his music at a time when it was considered old-fashioned, associated mostly with swing and even earlier styles. He has played clarinet, tenor sax, soprano sax, baritone sax, flute and bass flute in a way that reflects the blues without resort to bluster. (He's a tenorman from Texas, but hardly a "Texas tenor.")

There's simply no sound in the blues as easily digestible, accessible, instantly recognizable and as easy to play and sing as the music of Jimmy Reed . His best-known songs "Baby, What You Want Me to Do," "Bright Lights, Big City," "Honest I Do," "You Don't Have to Go," "Going to New York," "Ain't That Lovin' You Baby" and "Big Boss Man" have become such an integral part of the standard blues repertoire, it's almost as if they have existed forever. Because his style was simple and easily imitated, his songs were accessible to just about everyone from high school garage bands having a go at it to Elvis Presley Charlie Rich Lou Rawls Hank Williams, Jr
