Home Regia: Andrew Niccol Interpreti: Al Pacino, Chris Coppola, Catherine Keener, Rachel Roberts, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, Winona Ryder Produzione: Jersey Films Distribuzione: Nexo Da anni si parla di attori virtuali al posto di quelli umani e il film di Andrew Niccol (gia' regista di "Gattaca" e sceneggiatore di "The Truman Show") estremizza l'idea ipotizzando un regista in crisi, a causa dei capricci della prima attrice, che pensa bene di sostituire con S1m0ne, una bionda creata da un elaborato software. Lo spunto di partenza e' divertente e si presta ad una caustica analisi sociale, ma il film fatica a svincolarsi a una carineria di fondo che ammorbidisce molto il piglio della critica. La colpa principale e' della sceneggiatura, che trasforma rapidamente l'attrice virtuale in una star mondiale senza creare i presupposti perche' questo accada. Anche i dettagli tecnici, per quanto non determinanti, sono posti con una grossolanita' da far rimpiangere "Electric Dreams" come film d'avanguardia (elaborati software su minidisk da 5 pollici e un quarto, ormai scomparsi dal mercato; geni del computer ad ogni angolo; l'assenza di dubbi tecnici nel protagonista, non certo un esperto). Gli interpreti invece sono in parte: Al Pacino, nel primo ruolo comico della sua carriera, presta la sua gigioneria di classe al protagonista senza soffocarlo con scene madri e occhi sgranati e fa piacere incontrare Winona Ryder non sulle pagine di qualche tabloid scandalistico ma sul grande schermo, anche se per poco piu' di un cameo. Quanto alla bella di sintesi senz'anima, Rachel Roberts, funziona a dovere, anche se mai si pensa che possa essere realmente virtuale, come la produzione ha tentato di spacciarla (non compare manco nei titoli di coda se non come "S1m0ne nel ruolo di se stessa!").

Nell'inseguire la realizzazione dell'evento, simbolo della frenesia del sindaco-poliziotto nel gettare i delinquenti in gattabuia al minimo sospetto, Eli si imbatterà, fra voltafaccia e favori, squillo e telecamere-videogames, nei meandri di una società divisa in potenti clan che tramano sotto la superficie pulita e ordinata di New York. Produzione indipendente, con un cast eccezionale (non solo Al Pacino, ma una provocante Tea Leoni, Kim Basinger, splendida e soave, il redivivo Ryan O'Neal), People I know mostra fin dalle prime battute il coraggio di affrancarsi dallo stile narrativo hollywoodiano fatto di banali botta e risposta e un ritmo incalzante, in favore di scene lunghe e prolisse, il cui punto di vista e protagonista assoluto coincidono nel formidabile Al Pacino. Il film si basa quindi su due semplici assunti. Uno tematico: descrivere, su di uno sfondo di aperta polemica contro il sindaco Giuliani, la cinica e spietata alta società newyorkese. L'altro, stilistico: fare tutto ciò incentrando la visione sugli occhi di un personaggio onesto e di sinceri valori che vive per professione immerso in quel letamaio.

Alberto Cassani, 7 Marzo 2003 La regola del sospetto di Roger Donaldson Buon thriller scritto da Roger Towne ("Il Migliore"), Kurt Wimmer (" Sfera ") e Mitch Glazer ("S.O.S. Fantasmi"), "The Recruit" è uno dei migliori film dell'incostante regista australiano Roger Donaldson ("Thirteen Days", "Cocktail"). Pur non essendo neanche lontanamente memorabile, risulta essere un film solido, ben realizzato e dotato di buona suspense . Senza puntare troppo in alto, e incentrando la vicenda su un singolo personaggio piuttosto che su un complotto internazionale, il film non perde mai di interesse e non lascia cadere la tensione fino alla fine, quando un evidente balzello allo star system ci obbliga ad ascoltare il monologo di Al Pacino che anticipa la chiusura. Colin Farrell (" Minority Report "), qui al suo primo vero ruolo da protagonista, si dimostra perfettamente in grado di reggere un film quasi da solo: con la faccia e il fisico che ha potrebbe permettersi di apparire senza recitare, invece ci mette del suo e crea un personaggio vivo e interessante. Aspettiamolo nell'interessante thriller " Phone Booth " di Schumacher.

Cast Al Pacino (Frank Keller), Ellen Barkin (Helen Cruger), John Goodman (Sherman Tilley), Richard Jenkins (Gruber), William Hickey (Frank Keller Sr), John Spencer (Lieutenant), Michael Rooker (Terry) Plot Middle-aging police detective Frank Keller investigates a series of killings wherein men are found murdered, having been stripped naked and shot in the back of the head and the 45" single ‘Sea of Love’ left playing on the turntable. Each victim is found to have placed an ad which contains poetry in a singles magazine. Keller believes the killer is a woman, so he and his partner attempt to draw the killer out by placing ads with poetry in the magazine and posing as single. Despite himself Keller is drawn and attracted to Helen Cruger, one of the woman he meets. But as he becomes involved with her, all the evidence points to her being the killer. This was a massive success and earned Pacino a Golden Globe nomination. About the only place it received no notice at all was within the genre which totally overlooked its psycho-thriller plot. The plot bears a surprising resemblance to Basic Instinct which came out three years later. Both films have the same story of a cop being drawn into a heated sexual relationship with a woman who may or may not be the central suspect in a sex murder investigation, with the film's suspense centering around the revelation of clues that appear to implicate her in the murders.
