Michael Londra at the Celtic Cafe April's Featured Artist of the Month Michael Londra has many fans in the Celtic Cafe community, based on his years with Riverdance now he can garner even more admirers, thanks to the availability of his brand-new, self-titled CD. We were introduced to that incredibly beautiful voice in first the Lagan, then the Lee and then the Broadway (Shannon) companies of Riverdance. But what of the years before that? In Ireland, Michael Londra’s talent as a theatrical performer is widely acknowledged, having performed as lead in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" and roles like Pish Tush in “The Hot Mikado,” Charlie in “Brigadoon” and Joe in “Some Like It Hot” all major hits in Dublin. He performed the title role in the Irish premiere of "Martin Guerre" at the Irish National Concert Hall and in the famed Olympia theater. At age 30 he had given up a career as a therapist for people with learning disabilities and taken to the "wicked stage." In 1997, he was chosen to play Bobby Kennedy by the acclaimed theater director/ choreographer Larry Fuller in the world premiere of "J.F.K.," a musical drama. Tony Blair reshuffled the middle ranks of his Government and new Ministers joined the Department of Trade and Industry: Helen Liddell, Patricia Hewitt, Richard Caborn, Alan Johnson replacing Michael Wills, Lord Simon, John Battle, Ian McCartney and Brian Wilson. Lord Sainsbury a remains junior DTI Minister and retains his responsibility for science. At the Department for Education and Employment there were also some changes. Two important ones to note are the appointment of Malcolm Wicks who replaces George Mudie as Education and Training Minister. Michael Wills has also joined the Department taking responsibility for the University of Industry. Just before the recess, I tried to secure an Adjournment Debate to pressure the Government to appoint a Chief Engineering Advisor to the Cabinet Office. At present, there is a Chief Scientific Officer only. When I have pressed the Prime Minister, he has responded that he sees no need for an engineering advisor too. Readers of the IEE Review will be only too aware of the difference between engineering and pure science. The aim of the Adjournment Debate will be to let the House of Commons, and the Prime Minister, in particular, know too. I hope that the appointment of a Chief Engineering Advisor will give strength to the argument for recognition of the term "engineer" and to protect it in law as are architects, solicitors, and doctors. This would be one small step to improve the status of engineers in our society.

O'Reilly January 12, 2004 We are destroyed as of today," Michael Segal, owner of Chicago-based Near North National Group, told me several weeks ago in his 20th-floor office in the John Hancock Tower. The group's subsidiary, Near North Insurance Brokerage Inc. (NNIB), was Chicago's third-largest brokerage as recently as 2002 with annual revenues of $115 million but is now a shell of its former self. Segal's trial on federal charges that he embezzled more than $20 million from Near North's premium fund trust is set to start in April 2004. He has pleaded not guilty. In spite of the intense public scrutiny brought by his arrest by federal authorities in January 2002 and the indictment filed shortly thereafter, Near North apparently managed to maintain good relationships with its key carriers and clients. During our two-and-a-half-hour interview, Segal even shared supportive letters he'd received from executives at AIG and Chubb, among others. None of the executives returned calls seeking comment on Near North or Segal.

Denver's Castle in the Air By Michael Fumento August 24, 1994 Not to diminish the importance of the Whitewater investigation, but reporters looking for evidence of a massive Clinton scandal need look no further than the appointment of Federico Pena to the position of Secretary of Transportation and the business of Mr. Pena's handling of Denver International Airport. This airport is now locally – though not yet nationally – known as Federico's Folly. Both Mr. Pena and President Clinton cited his efforts, as mayor of Denver, to build the airport as a factor in the appointment to the Department of Transportation. In his speech nominating his choice for transportation secretary, Mr. Clinton said, "His legacy includes the new Denver International Airport, which I believe will be the largest in this country by a good ways." Mr. Pena's explanation was that Denver's investments paid off. "I believe that's the reason for [my] being asked to do this." All of Pena's promises just flew away. But the city's investments under Mr. Pena have been one huge flop after another, with the biggest by far being the airport, the opening for which was delayed again this month, until at least February of next year – almost a year and a half after being scheduled to open. In practically every way DIA will be worse than the perfectly serviceable airport it will replace.
