She was best known, and had the most commercial success, as a songwriter rather than a performer. Her most well-known songs include "And When I Die" (made a hit by ), "Stoney End", (covered by Barbra Streisand ), "Wedding Bell Blues" (covered by Fifth Dimension ), and "Eli's Coming" (a hit for Three Dog Night ). (Ironically, Nyro's own best-selling single was a cover of Carole King 's "Up on the Roof".) Possibly frustrated by her lack of commercial success, Nyro announced her retirement from the music business at the age of 24. Five years later, however, she returned with the album Smile , a jazzy , laid-back album. After , she would continue to release albums at the rate of about once every five years. Live At The Bottom Line Bronx-born Laura Nyro was a jazz-poet white soul singer-songwriter years before Joni Mitchell and Rickie Lee Jones . She soon became known as a hit songwriter, as her tunes became hits for Peter, Paul and Mary, the Fifth Dimension, and others. After a disastrous appearance at Monterey Pop in 1967, Nyro recovered with a couple of idiosyncratic, allusive, almost stream-of-consciousness LPs that were suprisingly successful. But she spent most of the next thirty years in retirement before her death in April of 1997, and her reputation is mostly built on what she accomplished in her late teens and early twenties. Nyro may be more noteworthy as a trailblazer than a composer or performer - despite her distinctive vocal style and soul-baring lyrics, I don't find her songs communicate to me anything like Mitchell or Jones do, partly because she can be so damn hard to understand. There's a marvelous fan site with just about anything you could ask for about Nyro, from discography to photos to interviews. (DBW)

Nyro's "disastrous" performance at the Montery Pop Festival shouldn't have been surprising; as a octave jumping and multi-tracked harmonies haven't transferred well onto the concert albums she's released. Nyro's bouncy meters, as well as the subtlety of her slow-moving ballads, had become dated post-Liverpool. Her strengths have shown up best in the studio, where her wild talent and tonal over-spill could let itself go without breaking anything. Many of her early songs were big hits by other artists: "And When I Die" (Blood, Sweat and Tears), "Eli's Coming" (Three Dog Night), "Sweet Blindness" and "Wedding Bell Blues" (5th Dimension), "Stony End" (Barbara Streisand). This success should have cleared the way for a long line of musical endeavors, but Laura Nyro wasn't the most ambitious of talents: she recorded very few albums of original material.

We've collected much of our Old Grey Cat-related work into what we call " The OGC Compendium ." It's a tote-able, 226-page paperback book that includes much of what was once on the site in one handy, tote-able tome. The price: My first introduction to Laura Nyro was at camp. My counselor played Eli and the Thirteenth Confession over and over. I was the one who never complained. Since I didn't have a stereo at the time (talk about child abuse), time blurs until my best friend got Gonna Take a Miracle . All that great R&B, some familiar favorites ("Gonna Take a Miracle," "Nowhere to Run") along with some new magic ("Monkey Time," "The Bells") had me seeking the originals (Major Lance and the Originals respectively). In college, my roommate asked if I had to play it quite so often. As the years passed, Nyro became one of my favorite artists, and I eventually bought all of her recordings. When she emerged from her performing hiatus, I flew to Boston to check her out at Nightstage and was less than impressed with her onstage persona. She seemed to ignore the audience, totally wrapped up in the music. In retrospect, it is the Laura Nyro I admire so much. The music always came first for her.

She had the voice of an Angel here, and I can only imagine how much joy she has experienced since then, in a realm where all is music and her gift would know no boundaries. A while back I discovered her demo recordings of two songs, one of which is “And When I Die”. Laura was just in her teens at the time of the writing and recording, a young singer-songwriter in search of a company to support her work. I was struck with the knowledge that the wishes she had expressed in that song, ever so many years ago were fully realized on that April dawn in 1997, and this is a comfort. Laura died in her beloved cottage with just large windows of glass between her and the surrounding trees and the water below.
