Rob Newman, appearing in what I've come to think of as the Mark Thomas slot, covers similar ground, but in a very different style. His brain fizzes with an extraordinary wealth of facts and quotes he's memorized for us. He occasionally has to pause in neutral while his mouth catches up. Contact Us review by Emily Koch Cheltenham Festival of Literature Sunday October 12 Meaghan Delahunt and Robert Newman yesterday joined Marcus Moore in an unassuming discussion of their most recent novels, both set partly in Mexico. Quizzed about the country and its people, the speakers had interesting insights to share. Delahunt revealed that she was surprised to hear so much Spanish being spoken when she visited the Spanish-speaking nation- she had expected Mexico to be very American but in fact it makes few concessions to the English language. This was supported by Newman with a tale from his time in Mexico when he went into a tape shop to find only one Anglo-saxon specimen – El Beatles – among numerous Samba compilations. When the Mexican populace were described as ‘without optimism’, Newman was defensive - ‘It’s actually very rare to find people without any optimism. Except maybe in Swindon.’ When Mexico was referred to as a ‘magical place’ Newman insisted that it wasn’t actually much different to ‘here’ full of ‘maquiladoras, hip hop and protests over tuition fees When talk turned to writing techniques, Delahunt was quick to make clear that she is ‘more disciplined with my sit ups than I am with my writing’, prompting Newman to disclose that he was ‘rather more obsessive than disciplined. There are two gears,’ he explained, ‘indolence or obsession.’ They are both apparently happy with their novels: Delahunt is ‘as pleased with In the Blue House as you can be pleased with something. Which is always a little displeased’ and Newman, though denying any narcissism, enjoys reading The Fountain at the Centre of the World and making mental notes to recommend this fantastic book to his friends.

We met in a suburban Philly hardcore-type of setting, somewhere between Swarthmore and Bryn Mawr, both of which are very tame, collegiate locales, maybe 8 years ago? Mark worked at a record shop and Lupe was in school but also worked at a cool bakery in downtown Philadelphia (a crucial fact). At some point, we met through our friend Xana, who lived like 10 blocks from the bakery, and started a band. Mark on bass, Xana on mini accordion, and Lupe on drums. We coulda been big, but we«ve never ! been people happy in the rehearsal studio, so perhaps we had 2, 3 practices, then we all moved to different cities. Virginia Hunt Newman International Award Virginia Hunt Newman has been called “The Mother of Infant Swimming.” She pioneered and focused worldwide attention on the non-forceful, non-traumatic method of teaching infants and preschool-age children to swim, earning great respect as an innovator in the field. She began her swimming career at the Indianapolis Athletic Club. From 1940 to 1948 she was a diver for the Los Angeles Athletic Club, winning swimming and diving titles. She performed in water shows with Johnny Weissmuller and Buster Crabbe for the USO. In 1950, Virginia wrote and directed a series of springboard diving films while working as an aquatic director and swimming coach at the Black Fox Military Academy in Los Angeles. In 1962, she gained international attention when her star student, Bing Crosby’s daughter Mary Frances, passed the Red Cross Beginner Test at age two – the youngest ever to be awarded the certificate. Red Cross Honorary Chairman Johnny Weissmuller presented the certificate to Mary Frances on national television, with coverage by “Life,” “Look” and “Time” magazines. This was the catalyst for Virginia to compile her methods of non-traumatic teaching in her 1967 book, Teaching an Infant to Swim , a bestseller published in England, Australia, Germany, Sweden, Italy and Japan.
