A Brief Story of Garden Design Italian Renaissance The Renaissance Mind During the Italian Renaissance - the 15th and 16th centuries - the garden evolved along side many other art forms, and the surviving examples, which have influenced garden designers down the centuries, are monuments to the ability of the innovative garden designers, sculptors and engineers who built them. Today, however, the gardens tend to be seen only in terms of beautiful statuary, fantastic water works, and large evergreen trees. This is far from the whole story, but to understand these gardens, it is essential to get into the Renaissance mind, which saw the world as hierarchical, but with each part interrelated. At the top was God, who had created Man, and Nature. Man perceived the natural world in terms of its usefulness to his needs: plants and animals provided medicine, food, and clothing. Yet at the same time Nature was part of the divinely created cosmos, and so to understand Nature was to further understand God. The Renaissance Garden Axial Arrangement Coming off this main axis was a main cross axis that divided the garden into four regular subdivisions. Latticework or Pergolas were used to cover the paths and give a stronger visual structure, and the four compartments were further subdivided with cross paths to produce a geometric grid pattern of regular units, most commonly squares. These compartimenti were defined by a low lattice fence or an herb hedge (lavender, sage, rosemary), which could be ornately arranged in a sort of knot garden design.

Astronaut Story Musgrave Visits CASA On October 16, 1998, six time astronaut, renowned scientist, and respected physician F. Story Musgrave visited Hickman High School and the CASA program. Story Musgrave was instrumental in the design of extravehicular activity equipment including space suits, life support systems, airlocks and manned maneuvering units. He has flown in six space missions, and was the first man to participate in a space walk. He also repaired the Hubble Space Telescope during 3 of the 5 space walks on that mission. He has spent a total of 1,281 hours, 59 minutes, and 22 seconds in space. Dr. Musgrave earned bachelor degrees in mathematics, statistics and chemistry, and masters degrees in computer programming, physiology, biophysics and literature at various universities. Musgraves NASA career spanned the Apollo era to the Space Shuttle program into initial development of spacewalk strategies for the International Space Station. Throughout the Shuttle program, from its earliest stages to the present, Story has been instrumental in developing the techniques crew members use to perform spacewalks, said David C. Leestma, director of Flight Crew Operations. His knowledge, expertise and friendship will be sorely missed. Musgrave, 62, joined NASA in 1967 and is a veteran of six Space Shuttle flights, having spent more than 1,281 hours in space. He first flew on STS-6 in 1983, the maiden voyage of Challenger. During that flight Musgrave and fellow astronaut Don Peterson conducted the first spacewalk of the Shuttle era. His other Shuttle flights include STS-51F aboard Challenger in 1985, STS-33 on board Discovery in 1989, STS-44 on Atlantis in 1991, and STS-61, the first Hubble Space Telescope Servicing mission aboard Endeavour in 1991, and finally STS-80 on Columbia in 1996. STORY MUSGRAVE, M.D. Over the course of 30 years, Story Musgrave, M.D. paved his way into NASA history as one of its most colorful, passionate and dedicated astronauts. He joined NASA in 1967 with every confidence to be part of a mission to Mars. Although those plans didn't work out, many others did. He served on two satellite-launching missions and led the spacewalking team that repaired the Hubble Space Telescope in 1993. He was also the first astronaut to fly a record-breaking six space shuttle missions. And, as of his last flight in 1996, he was the oldest person in space at the age of 61. In addition, he made many "behind-the-scenes" contributions, helping to design the Skylab program in the mid-1970s and the spacesuits and equipment needed by astronauts on spacewalks. Prior to joining NASA, Musgrave was a Marine, serving as an aviation electrician and aircraft crew chief in the Far East. After returning to the U.S., he also worked for the Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, New York, as a mathematician. When selected by NASA in 1967, he was a researcher in cardiovascular and exercise physiology at the University of Kentucky, where he has previously interned as a surgeon and worked as a U.S. Air Force post-doctoral fellow. Born in 1935 in Boston, this amazing space explorer is also a fan of the classroom. To date, he holds six degrees a doctorate of medicine, as well as two bachelor's degrees and three master's degrees in subjects ranging from mathematics to business administration to literature. He has published 44 scientific papers on topics such as aerospace medicine, exercise physiology and clinical surgery. When not sitting in a classroom, he regularly devours literature, philosophy and metaphysics.

"I suppose if you had to use one label, I'm an artist," says Musgrave, whose career in NASA's space program spanned 30 years before his retirement in 1997. "My talk is as much about art as it is about science and math." On Tuesday, he visited Fort Lee High School and the Upper School in Englewood Cliffs, sharing the tale of how he helped to repair the Hubble Space Telescope in a 1993 mission on the space shuttle Columbia. He used slides, video, music, and photographs to carry out his current mission: motivational speaker. But the pearls of wisdom Musgrave, 68, shares aren't just from the perspective of a space explorer. He draws a lot from his experiences working on his family's dairy farm in Massachusetts during the late 1930s and 1940s. By age 10 he started fixing tractors and other farm machinery - skills Musgrave said didn't seem likely to lead him to the space program.
