Computer Weekly
Dec 2, 1999 by Martin Couzins
So what's with the dishes coming in 1/2lb and 1lb portions?" I asked my friend. "It's all about sharing," he replied. "Buy a couple of dishes and share." That is exactly what the three of us did and what a place to do it. The Mumtaz Paan House Restaurant in Bradford, the largest Asian restaurant in Europe and probably the king of Kashmiri food in the UK, lived up to all of my friend's hype. Mumtaz is a no-frills place to eat where the emphasis is on quality home-made food, not flock wallpaper and decorative tableware. You really are in for a treat, particularly if you go with someone who knows the dishes, as I did. My friend took it upon himself to take charge of the meal and order the food. Four papadums, some pickles and a heap of onion salad kicked off proceedings nicely. The pickles looked and tasted home-made; no jar-style luminous pickles, no cloying chutney hell. And everything you wanted was provided in abundance. For starters, we shared lamb boti (marinated lamb on a skewer) and seekh kebab (minced lamb and herbs cooked on the skewer).

Mumtaz Mahal
by Richard Buck
Love at first sight
From the first time her connections laid eyes on her, she was held in the highest regard. Purchased at auction in 1922 for the account of the Aga Khan, her sales price of 9100 guineas represented the highest price given at an English sale since the great filly Sceptre went throught the ring 22 years earlier. The Bloodstock Breeders Review, in reviewing the sale described Mumtaz Mahal as, "Wonderful, as near to perfection as imagination can conceive"
Tested
Her Papa

She was compared to her father, The Tetrarch, dubbed "The Spotted Wonder" for the unusual spots on his grey coat. He was sensational, a wonder horse, but succumbed to injury after winning all seven of his races, before he could prove his ability to stay the classics. It was the Tetrarch that gave Mumtaz Mahal her gray coat and at least some of her sensational speed. Most of the present-day grey horses trace directly to Mumtaz Mahal and/or her sire, The Tetrarch. So, when you see a fast gray, you might want to take a moment and pay homage to these two.
Her Mama
Mumty's mother was the chestnut Lady Josephine a filly of very high class at age 2 but who could not stay further than 5 furlongs. Lady Josephine's sire Sundridge was said to be the fastest horse of his day and an influence for high speed in the British Isles. Josephine's mother was Americus Girl, product of a mating of the fast imported American horse, Americus, and an English dam. Lady Josephine was to have an indelible influence on the breed primarily through Mumtaz Mahal but secondarily thru her daughter Lady Juror who foaled Fair Trial, who in his time was one of the primary sources of high-class speed around the world.

In the name of God, the Most Beneficent, the All-Merciful A W o r d

E very religion in the beginning is a minority affair. The Prophet of Islam and the early Muslims suffered persecution and made Hijrah (migration) to Medina where they established the first Islamic state within a territory not exceeding a few kilometres. In the dozen remaining years of his life, through armed conflict, diplomacy and statesmanship, the Prophet ruled over more than a million square kilometres of territory which included the whole of the Peninsula of Arabia and southern parts of Iraq and Palestine. Hardly fifteen years after his death, by the time of Caliph Uthman, the Prophet's followers ruled over three continents. They later entered Europe and expanded their domains in Asia and Africa. These are the words of Dr. M. Hamidullah of Paris, France, which appeared in a recent issue of the Journal of the Institute of Muslim Minority Affairs. These words remind me of Al murhoom Dr. M. Qadeer Baig, r.a., who would often reassure us, in the same vein, saying that "after all, Islam began with a minority of one [i.e., the Prophet (pbuh)] the smallest possible minority!" These words always came with a delightful smile and a peculiar sparkle of joy in his eyes. "There is only one way to change the world really." To paraphrase his words of wisdom, he would continue on to say that "you can change it only by reforming its inhabitants individually, one by one, and one at a time. The individual with whom the reform must begin is that individual who has the ambition to reform the whole world. In other words, first change yourself, then change the world."

Our President
Syed Mumtaz Ali
President, The Canadian Society of Muslims (Dec. 2000) Syed Mumtaz Ali, taking the oath of office over the Qur'an in 1962
The President of the Canadian Society of Muslims recently received (March 2001) two awards for outstanding service to Islam from the Muslim community here in Toronto. They asked for a one-page resume listing his accomplishments which was then published in a booklet that outlined the recipients of the awards and their accomplishments. We thought our readers would like to know a bit about the background of our President, so we have reproduced here the description we gave of his accomplishments to that committee. Syed Mumtaz Ali has a long and impressive resume, but unfortunately we will only be able to mention a few of his most salient accomplishments here. He was educated at several universities. His first university was Osmania in Hyderabad Deccan, India. Back in the days when he attended it, (the 1940s) Osmania was a famous University and was THE University to attend in India. There he studied under such great people as Maulana Manazir Ahsan Gilani and other prominent scholars such as Beoband and Nadwa as well as Dr. M. Hamidullah. He received a BA in theology and also an LL.B. in Muslim Law from Osmania. He had received various scholarships as well in those studies. Some of the subjects he studied were: the Qur'an (exegesis), Hadith, Usul, Fiqh, Kalam, Logic, Arabic, as well as other Arts subjects. Due to the tumultuous conditions from the unfortunate takeover of Hyderabad by India, and under self-imposed exile, he travelled to Pakistan where he practised law as an Advocate for five years. Then he travelled to London, England where he studied at the University of London. There he completed the courses for an LL.M. in Muslim Law and also courses as a Chartered Secretary.

Columns Features Interviews ... Interviews 'I wanted Ash as Mumtaz Mahal' Jodhpur's Mehrangarh Fort, home to the Rajput rulers of the kingdom of Marwar, is bustling. The 15th century fort is leased out to filmmaker Akbar Khan for his Taj Mahal An Eternal Love Story , an opulent take on Emp eror Shah Jahan's love for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. The interiors of the real Taj Mahal with emerald and sapphire encrusted walls and gold and silver doors, apart from the interiors of the Diwan-e-Khaas and Agra Fort have been recreated at Mehrangarh. Taj Mahal is designed for the Indian and international markets," says Akbar Khan, younger brother of actor-director brothers Feroz and Sanjay Khan. The film starts with an ageing Shah Jahan reminiscing about his first meeting with Anjuman Bano, later Mumtaz Mahal. Excerpts from an interview with Vickey Lalwani Your last film was Haadsa in 1983. What made you return to filmmaking after two decades? I acted in films like Aakarshan and Swati as leading man. Then I started making a feature film. I had completed 50 per cent of it when unfortunately my brother Sanjay met with an accident on the sets of his television serial
